Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt? spent? ?1 million on works by British “guerilla artist” Banksy at a contemporary art sale in London last night. The extraordinary auction at the Lazarides Gallery in Soho saw works worth an estimated ?10 million by artists including Damien Hirst. The pair were not there in person but still managed to nab the Banksy piece, with its huge pricetag.

After the sale, there was little reverence shown for the works involved despite their purchasers. They were loaded onto a scruffy truck parked up in the back streets, and the only clue to their worth was the presence of security guards.
