I imagine that as difficult as coming out of the closet is, it’s made ten times more difficult for famous celebrities or children of famous celebrities. What’s the pressure they must be facing?
In this particular case, Michael Jordan‘s daughter, Jasmine Jordan, has officially come out via Instagram. She uploaded several cozy pictures with her girlfriend, Carmen, and then wrote, “That little closet is holding me back.”
Jasmine is Jordan’s only daughter, so I assume he did know about this before she revealed it publicly. Jasmine’s history with relationships – at least, from what we know publicly – has always revolved around men. Hopefully, Jasmine received full support from her parents when she decided to come out, but the fact that she was so casual about it on Instagram suggests that she did.
In today’s day and age, it’s getting a lot easier to come out than it was twenty or even ten years ago. There’s a wide range of support networks for anybody who doesn’t get it from their parents or families, but the lack of support is really dwindling. I’m sure that if you drive out to Timbucktoo, Ohio, you might see a lack of openness about it, but in urban populations, it’s not difficult for gays and lesbians to come out of the closet and have a positive experience during it.
Most of the replies to Jasmine have been very positive, and her fans have been praising her decision to come out of the closet. While there are always one or two wackos who decide to mess up everything up by being homophobic, the large majority of fans were very supportive.
