Boardwalk Empire “King of Norway” Recap: Season 5 Episode 5

Tonight on HBO Terence Winter’s Boardwalk Empire starring Steve Buscemi returns with an all new Sunday October 5, season 5 episode 5 called, “King of Norway.” On tonight’s episode Chalky returns to Atlantic City on a quest for revenge. Meanwhile, Nucky sets up a meeting with Maranzano in New York when he’s concerned about Luciano’s future plans; and Margaret comes to an agreement with Carolyn Rothstein. In Chicago, Eli and a visiting June attend a dinner party hosted by Nelson and Sigrid. Also: A young Nucky tries to impress Mabel’s father in 1897.

On last week’s episode, facing a shared dilemma, Nucky and Margaret found common ground in Atlantic City. Luciano encountered an old adversary while meeting with Capone (Stephen Graham) in Chicago. Sally Wheet (Patricia Arquette) made a payment in Cuba amidst concerned of a grass-roots uprising. In 1884, young Nucky showed young Eli (Oakes Fegley) how the other half lives, and took another step up the Commodore’s ladder. Did you watch last week’s episode? Did you watch the last episode? On tonight’s episode Chalky (Michael Kenneth Williams) returns to Atlantic City with vengeance on his mind. Concerned about the ongoing threat from Luciano (Vincent Piazza), Nucky (Steve Buscemi) arranges a meeting with Maranzano (Giampiero Judica) in New York. In Chicago, Eli’s (Shea Whigham) reunion with June (Nisi Sturgis) takes an unexpected turn after a dinner party hosted by Van Alden (Michael Shannon) and Sigrid (Christiane Seidel). Capone (Stephen Graham) looks to relocate his operation out of Chicago; Margaret (Kelly Macdonald) completes a deal with Carolyn Rothstein (Shae D’Lyn); Nucky gets bad news from Cuba. In 1897, young Nucky (Marc Pickering) looks to win over Mabel’s father (Burke Moses) while asking for expanded responsibilities as deputy sheriff.

LIVE RECAP:

Flashback–Atlantic City 1897

A younger (but much older than in previous shows) Nucky arrives at a dead body under the boardwalk. He investigates the body and it turns out to be a dead hawk.

Present Day–

Al Capone is in the bathroom with the door open. In the main room, his cronies are bustling about. Al comes out of the bathroom and he’s clearly distressed after having talked to Nucky last night. He wants his business moved immediately, to avoid any unwanted attention.

Chalky comes to visit Nucky. Nucky asks Chalky what happened, and Chalky elaborates a bit. Nucky admits that he doesn’t know where Narcisse is — and that seeking him out would do nobody any good. Nucky offers Chalky shelter and safekeeping being that he’s a wanted man.

Nucky leaves to go to New York. He talks with John and has a drink.

There’s a brief flashback to Nucky trying to find his spot as a young professional in the budding Atlantic City landscape.

George and Eli have a dinner with their spouses.

Margaret seems to have begun her settlement with Carolyn Rothstein.

A U.S. marshal comes into the club looking for Chalky, but Chalky successfully stays hidden.

Flashback–

Nucky has a meal with his girlfriend’s father, who isn’t really approving of their relationship.

Present day–

Nucky meets with Marziano and asks when Luciano will be deal with. As they are meeting, a car pulls up and unleashes fire on the bar in which they’re meeting. Nucky isn’t harmed.

George and Eli are in a room waiting to be questioned by some authorities. The authorities say they’re trying to put Al Capone away with a case for tax evasion. They want them to get his ledger books so as to prove his fraud.

Nucky is finally told that Sally died. Nucky wants to know who is responsible, but he’s not given any names. He drinks his alcohol in disbelief.
