28-year-old Fantasic Four actor Chris Evans was offered the role last week and according to the Hollywood Reporter he has taken up the opportunity to play the Marvel comic book hero in ‘The First Avenger: Captain America’.
The superhero was originally created during World War II to encourage patriotism amongst US citizens, but has since gone on to have a cult following worldwide. It is not the first time Chris has portrayed a superhero on screen – he previously starred as the Human Torch in the ‘Fantastic Four’ movies. Marvel and Chris’ representatives have so far declined to comment on the casting.
The plot of the film sees Steve Rogers volunteering to a research project after he is deemed unsuitable for military service. The project turns Steve into Captain America – charged with protecting the honour and ideals of the US. ‘The Wolfman’ director Joe Johnston is directing the project with Jack Kirby and Christopher Markus writing. Other stars rumoured to be starring include Keira Knightley and Emily Blunt.
