Who wants to hear a famous singer pretending to sing his own music? Nobody, that’s who – but if you are going to go the fake route and lip-sync a song then at least make sure you have the synchronization right. American Idol winner, Scotty McCreery, managed to miss his cue and only pretended to start singing after the song was already blaring out over the loudspeakers at the annual Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade in NYC. So thousands of people got treated to Scotty flubbing his lip-syncing.
McCreery simply didn’t begin singing his hit song, “The Trouble With Girls,” as the NBC cameras zoomed in for a close-up on the deep-voiced country singer. So although it was Scotty’s voice that people were hearing, his lips were not moving. The “I Love You This Big” star was made to appear awkward, to say the least, but he figured out what was happening and jumped in after a few seconds as you can see in the video below.
For those of you who don’t know, Scotty is an American country singer from Garner, North Carolina, who won the tenth season of American Idol last May. His debut studio album, Clear as Day was released in October 2011. The album includes the top 40 country hits “I Love You This Big” and “The Trouble with Girls.”
Lip-syncing has a long if not glorious history. Some awful examples include the attempts of The Partridge Family, Milli Vanilli, Ashlee Simpson and Britney Spears.
During Super Bowl XLIII, Jennifer Hudson’s flawless performance of the national anthem was lip-synced to a previously recorded track, and apparently so was Faith Hill’s who performed before her. The singers lip-synced at the request of Rickey Minor, the pregame show producer, who argued that “There’s too many variables to go live.” Subsequent Super Bowl national anthems were performed live.
The most famous lip-syncer of all was Michael Jackson during his performance on the television special Motown 25: Yesterday, Today, Forever when Jackson lip-synced ‘Billie Jean.’
