News from Universal Studios has been a slow trickle ever since they bought the rights to the Fifty Shades of Grey trilogy. Fans of the books are searching cyberspace for the smallest rumor to fuel their movie frenzy, and we’re delighted to bring you a pre-production update! We previously reported that Kelly Marcel (of TV’s Terra Nova) was hired to pen the movie, but the crucial role of director is still up for grabs—and the fight is getting intense!
Below are three people that Hope Carson, an expert on all things Fifty Shades, believes could be short-listed for the director’s role.
Angelina Jolie has to be the most desperate for the role—she was just thwarted by newcomer Jennifer Lawrence for the lead in Silver Linings Playbook, so her redemption is crucial! I think Angelina would bring a really artsy, dark look to the movie, focusing a lot on Christan Grey’s past. But the other two contenders are even more wild!
Ex-stripper and soon-to-be dad Channing Tatum is reportedly taking a long leave of absence from acting to focus on directing. He was previously in the running for Christain, but having him behind the camera could be a good move. The guy radiates pure sex appeal and would be sure to bring a lot of Christian’s gentlemanly charisma to the screen. And, you know he wouldn’t leave us hanging on the scenes that earned the book the nickname “mommie porn!”
My least favorite option is Mark Wahlberg, but he is still on the short list to direct! It seems like he focuses on the dark and seedy, the underdog story, or the ugly truth. I mean, Christian’s history and childhood are interesting, but people aren’t going to be lining up to see this movie as a documentary about social work! I just have images of every scene being shot with a dramatic blue filter. Who do you think would be the best director of the three? Or is there someone more worthy not in our list?
