Young Hollywood It girls, Jennifer Lawrence and Kristen Stewart are campaigning hard for a new, gritty role, some insiders say would turn them into the next Meryl Streep. The two women, who are no strangers to box office supremacy with franchises such as Twilight and Hunger Games under their belts, are battling for the role of Peyton Loftis in the indie film adaption of William Styron’s disturbing first novel, “Lie Down in Darkness.”
It’s not that weird that both actresses want the role. What’s odd is that they’re both publicly telling everyone and their mothers how much they want it.
“It is very unusual for two actresses to be so vocal in lobbying for a role,” a source tells Page 6, “and even more unusual that they are the two hottest young actresses of the moment. It’s an independent movie, and they see it as a career-making role, like Meryl Streep in Sophie’s Choice.”
We’re already reported that earlier this month Kristen told UK’s Elle magazine that she was all about Peyton, a suicidal young girl in love with her father. “I want to play Peyton more than anything I can possibly taste or touch in my life. I want to play her so bad. She’s in love with him. I mean, I think she’s in love with him. It’s not his fault. They’re the most f***ed-up family.”
But now Jennifer is all about the incest too. Lawrence told W magazine. “I am obsessed with that part. I have this feeling of protectiveness over characters I want to play . . . If someone else gets the part, I’m afraid they won’t do it right. I’m trying to write the director . . . to convince him that I should be in his movie. I’ll chase him if I have to. I’ll sit outside his house.”
This is so much fun! I love celebrity gossip, but more importantly, I love the inner workings of the Hollywood system. Whoever gets this part is scoring a major coup. I would easily say Jennifer is the better actress. Hunger Games is light years better than Twilight and she’s already racked up an Oscar nomination for Winter’s Bone. But Kristen just upped the ante with her raw performance in On the Road. In fact, LaineyGossip.com reviewed her in the film and said, “And then there’s the fearless Stewart in her finest and most aggressive effort, throwing down a very impressive challenge to some of her peers, almost as though she was toying with them before – what Twilight? I just didn’t feel like showing you my arsenal before, but now that I have…aren’t you afraid?”
I used to think Jennifer had it in the bag but not so sure anymore. What I am sure about is that the fight for this role will be awesome. The two actresses have said they respect each other and have rebuffed rumors that there was any competition in the past between their mega-successful franchises. But I think that’s all about to change. These women are never going to shell out anything negative about each other because that’s not how they roll but, let’s just say they aren’t going to be going out for beers anytime soon.
