Tonight on ABC the season premiere of Emmy and Golden Globe award winning television show Modern Family airs. Tonight’s episode 1 of season 4 is called “Bringing Up Baby.” If you have never watched the show before you should it is about Jay Pritchett who sits at the head of a large and unconventional family. Now in his second marriage to his gorgeous young wife, Gloria, Jay has been given something of a second chance.
Still, old habits are hard to break, and it’s trial by fire as he tries to adapt to life with the same passion and vigor that Gloria exhibits, which are matched by her precocious 12-year-old son, Manny. There are some culture clashes, a few misunderstandings, but also plenty of sweet victories along the way.
On tonight’s show Jay’s birthday is upon us again and, as before, he makes it well-known that he wishes to keep it as low key as possible, with no grand gestures or surprises. But leave it to the family to miss the mark yet again! Phil takes Jay on a very unconventional fishing trip with his buddies, and Gloria struggles with how to break the pregnancy news to him.
Meanwhile, Dylan moves into the Dunphy household temporarily, and Mitch and Cam decide to look into adopting a cat as they continue to cope with their failed attempt to adopt another child.
“Modern Family” stars Ed O’Neill as Jay, Julie Bowen as Claire, Ty Burrell as Phil, Sof’a Vergara as Gloria, Jesse Tyler Ferguson as Mitchell, Eric Stonestreet as Cameron, Sarah Hyland as Haley, Nolan Gould as Luke, Ariel Winter as Alex, Rico Rodriguez as Manny and Aubrey Anderson-Emmons as Lily.

Tonight’s episode: It’s Jay’s birthday and he wants no surprises. Manny is making fun of jay, he’s been watching the comedy roasts. Phil shows up at Jay’s house and organizes for the guys to steal him away for his birthday.
Cameron and Mitchell got a large stuffed elephant from their friend Pepper, which sits beside the large gorilla. Lilly walks in and wants to know where her brother is, Cameron and Mitchell try to tell her that she won’t be getting one, so she asked for a kitten instead.
Manny has a big decision to make about camp and wants Gloria’s input, but she is distracted. Gloria asks Manny to sit down and she tells him that she is pregnant. Manny doesn’t get the appeal of having a baby in the house and wants to see what Jay thinks about it. Gloria is worried that Jay won’t be able to adapt and Manny agrees.
Cameron tries to donate the elephant and gorilla, but he can’t even give them away as they place is afraid they might have bed bugs. Lilly wants Mitchell to make the car shake because she’s bored, he does it once and goes to refuse the second time only to have Lilly remind him that she didn’t get her brother they promised.
Jay is still blindfolded and the guys try to get him into the boat for his surprise and he falls over into the water. Phil jumps in to save him and punches him in the head. In the end, Jay is in the boat with his three best friends for his birthday. Jay is feeling better because he is finally dry, Phil hits the gas and even though Phil is sitting on the back of the boat with Shorty, Phil falls overboard again.
Gloria tells Claire that she is pregnant and in private, Claire is kind of happy that Gloria is going to get fat.
Haley is suffering from a hangover and Claire gives her some concoction to drink that literally makes her vomit. It wasn’t a hangover cure, she just wanted Haley to suffer a little more with the hangover and Alex knew it.
Mitchell and Cameron are trying to adopt a cat and are refused to take it right away because their is a screening process first. Mitchell leaves and gets back in the car, Cameron turns around and fins that the elephant and gorilla on the roof look sexual the way they are moving back and forth.
Haley’s boyfriend tells Claire that he has a place to stay, he’ll be fine – in the end, he moves in with the Dunphy family. Jay is back and Matty is concerned that his cloths are all wrinkled. Claire corners Jay and tells him that someone is going to give him some news and she wants him to be loving a supportive. Mitchell and Cameron walk in and announce that they are getting a cat. Jay tells them that he is thrilled for them and offers his support. Matty lets the cat out of the bag that Gloria is pregnant, Jay is thrilled and says it’s the greatest news he has ever heard. Jay is almost in tears and Gloria says she is going to get mostly fat. Fast forward, Gloria has a baby bump and she is glowing, Haley makes a joke about being pregnant and Claire tells her not to even think about it.
Manny wrote a poem for his new little brother and recites it to everyone and it gets a little explicit, Jay stops him and tells everyone it’s time for a drink.
