Tonight’s Recap: Bay has returned home from a summer trip and is having a welcome home party. She has brought her new boyfriend, Alex, to spend time with her family and friends. She has an awkward moment with Daphne who has pretty clearly hooked up with Bay’s first love, Emmett. Bay tries to play it off like it’s fine with her but there is that pause that hangs in the air, which means otherwise.  Daphne later tells Emmett that Bay now has a boyfriend

Bay’s mom attempts to talk to her about everything in general but it’s the typical mother/teen daughter relationship meaning Kathryntalks while Bay rolls her eyes. Bay also admits that she has never read her mothers book. She tells her it was nice to NOT be the girl that was switched at birth, at least for a few weeks.

Kathryn gets one of her first book reviews and it’s a four star rating which elicits cheers from the family. Daphne takes a moment to suck it up and ask Kathryn to help her get a job in a kitchen. She explains how badly she wants the job but keeps hitting walls because of being deaf.  Just like that, because this is television- Daphne has not just a job, but a chef’s position in a ritzy kitchen.

Bay runs into Emmetts’ hook up at school and tells her quite simply to leave. Transfer, get out, go home and tell her mother that she wants to leave.

Daphne may have been handed the kitchen job but it turns to disaster pretty quickly. She knocks some things over and is thrown out of the kitchen by her new boss that resents her from the get go. She asks him to look at her when he speaks so that she can read his lips and he tells her straight out no way. Not everyone can do everything and if she can’t cut it in the kitchen being treated like everyone else then she can leave. He tells her to go and do the dishes because she can’t do much harm there.

Daphne later confides in Toby and tells him how afraid she is that she’ll never be given a real chance because of being deaf. She’ll always be stuck in the kitchen as a dishwasher because people will be afraid to give her a real chance.

Kathryn shows up at the restaurant ready to do battle on Daphne’s behalf but Daphne sends her packing. She wants to prove that she can hold her own in that rough kitchen without any special favors.

Meanwhile Bay decides to meet up with Emmett after breaking up with Alex, who could see that her heart was elsewhere. Emmett pleads that they were bigger than his one mistake but Bay isn’t budging. She tells him that she needs to get over him and he disagrees. He informs her that he’ll wait for her.

Daphne talks to Kathryn and tells her that she has been through discriminatory behavior her whole life and after getting upset, then she simply deals with things and she intends to deal with this too. She will prove herself and earn her spot in the kitchen doing something other than washing dishes.
