LIVE RECAP:
Tonight marks the first time that all of the acts will be performing for the audience. They need votes from the masses and not just the judges starting right about now. The show begins with a bit of a surprise. The judges believe that letting Diamond White go home was a mistake, so she’s back to perform tonight, joining the other 12 finalists. This week’s theme is songs from the greatest movies.
Arin Ray is up first and he starts off the show with a pretty cool variation on Estelle’s American Boy. He reminds me of a really young Chris Brown minus the bad rep. LA Reid thinks he did a great job and just found his way. Demi Lovato is in shock at how well he did and Simon Cowell is super impressed.
Paige Thomas drops down from the ceiling to perform a really inspired rendition of the old Berlin song, Take My Breath Away. I may be one of the few people on earth that hates this song, but she almost changes my mind. I love Paige and wouldn’t mind if she wins this season. LA Reid thought it was good but he wasn’t blown away. Britney Spears loved the theatrics and the beginning of the song. Simon thinks it would have been better if they switched it up and made the end of the song dancier. Demi is quite pissed off at Simon and is one of the few people that I’ve ever scene actually fire back at him. She’s not taking any of his crap!
Vino Alan is cranking out a rendition of the old classic, When A Man Loves A Woman. Britney thinks the song really showed off his voice and Demi loves that he poured everything out on the stage. Simon tells him that he went from zero to hero in one week. Simon now takes another shot at Demi for saying she wasn’t sure if Vino could be a pop star. These two will keep it ugly all season I’m sure!
Emblem3 entertained the audience with a mash up of My Girl and California Girl and the audience is going kind of bonkers. Are they the next One Direction? For a second here I’m entertaining the idea. Demi guns for Simon because he plugged his other group (One Direction) in their performance. She believes they deserve far better than that treatment and Simon all but tells her to shut up.
Beatrice Miller is fighting through a chronic dry throat to sing The Goo Goo Dolls Iris. This teenager sounds like a very young Edie Brickell. She sounds a bit scratchy but it works within this song. LA Reid thinks she sounds like a hit record. Demi says she knows that she’ll always connect to whatever Beatrice sings. Simon believes she is a great performer and Britney thinks she has the best personality in the competition.
Jennel Garcia is the first one to really crank up the heat tonight. Demi is her mentor and has helped to guide her towards channeling her inner rocker chick. She sings I Love Rock N Roll and LA Reid thought it came across as a Joan Jett parody. Simon doesn’t like it one bit and thinks Demi made a mess of her. Demi tells Simon that’s why she was her mentor instead of him. The crowd went nuts and loved her, regardless of Simon’s opinion.
Tate Stevens is absolutely the best thing to grace this stage. His version of Wanted Dead or Alive sounds like it belongs on the radio already and there’s no way this guy is leaving any time soon. Britney stops chewing scenery long enough to tell Tate that he’s a slice of America. Demi believes he has what it takes to be a star. Simon believes he has arrived and LA Reid is super proud of him.
Lyric 145 definitely win for the most creative of the night. They put on a spectacle that reminds me of Black Eyed Peas. They did a rap version of Supercalifragalisticexpialidocius that completely brought down the house and won over all the judges.
Diamond White was sent home last week only to be brought back again. The judges all agreed that it was a mistake to let her go and so tonight she has a lot to prove. Of course channeling Whitney Houston will help her prove everything and more. She blasts the roof off while singing I Have Nothing and obviously she deserves that spot in the competition. LA thought it was an ambitious song and she rose to the occasion. Demi is near tears and Simon tells her that she proves that dreams can come true.
CeCe Frey pulled Eye of the Tiger out of the proverbial hat this week. I’m not too sure about this performance. LA was not blown away but Britney thought it was pretty rebellious. Simon thought it was horrible and he believes Demi is leading her in the wrong direction.
Carly Rose Sonenclar belts out the Bruno Mars song I Wish It Would Rain and then bursts into a million tears. LA loved it and Demi thinks this was absolutely in her element. Simon believes that Carly is a star in the making and Britney feels bad for whoever has to follow her.
Jason Brock is being referred to as “Mr. Entertainment” because he is a great performer. Just when I’m convinced that he belongs on Broadway he pulls out a soulful version of I Believe I Can Fly that gives me chills. He just stands there and sings it, proving that there doesn’t always need to be a huge production behind him. Britney and Demi both feel like he’s a Vegas lounge act. Simon’s not buying it either.
Fifth Harmony is the all-girl group that has now changed their names three times. They are doing a song from Twilight and the harmonies are amazing. They are another act with minimal production that just shines. Britney was absolutely wrong, THIS act should close the show, just as they are. The judges are all impressed and Demi points out that there isn’t a weak link in this group and that is what sets them apart.
One act goes home tomorrow night so tune in to see who it’ll be!
