It had to happen sooner or later – Glee are doing a full length episode dedicated to Whitney Houston. The girls and boys of the world’s most famous Glee club are currently filming the special show. It will feature eight Whitney classics like I Wanna Dance With Somebody and I’m Every Woman.
According to E! the episode is not your usual tribute. We’ve seen the group pay homage to big stars like Michael Jackson, Madonna, Lady Gaga and Britney Spears – but a source on set says this is more than an all singing, all dancing memorial to the Diva ‘It’s using Whitney’s music as a way to say goodbye. A way to respectfully say thank you for her music.’ It’s been described as a ‘character piece‘. We’ll see the cast having a hard time letting go.
It’s not the first time Whit has bobbed up on the show. Following her sudden death last month there was a one song tribute from Amber Riley. Her rendition of I Will Always Love You was added to the end of an episode as a dedication. The idea for a full length Whitney special was only looked at after she died on February 11. When the Producers checked out her back catalog they knew they had the makings of a standout episode.
It’s not clear whether Amber’s original tribute will be included or if the song will get a fresh makeover. Exactly which songs are getting the Glee treatment remains under wraps but you’d have to think How Will I Know and Saving All My Love For You would get a look in. They might even venture into later territory like Step By Step.
There’s no air date for the Whitney episode yet. But we should see it sooner rather than later. The producers would be keen to get it on screen while interest in the singer is at an all time high. It’ll be interesting to see if the show touches on her well known battle with drugs. After all we have been told to expect some changes Lea Michele Promises Shock And Awe With New Glee
