The Friars Club came out to celebrate a certain someone yesterday. Not sure a place known for knife throwing can ever truly change its nature but, hey, no one could temper Don Rickles’s excitement out on the red carpet.
He was getting honored last night with The Friars Lifetime Achievement award. The 87-year-old comedian was in great spirits but appeared to be low in energy. There were several moments where he appeared to be tiring; however, if you think that stopped anyone from cracking jokes then you are sorely mistaken.
The raunchiness started outside. How could it not with such a notable guest list? Kathy Griffin, Joan Rivers, Regis Philblin, Robert Deniro, and many more Bobs — including Bob Costas, Bob Saget, and Bob Newhart — came out to honor Rickles. Known as “Mr. Warmth,” Rickles’s actual personality is known to be a little caustic. His infamous line from last night was “So many stars here, nobody big.” Ouch!
The others definitely fired back. Robert Deniro, the reticent and sweet Bobby Deniro, joked about how he thought last night was a memorial. After all Rickles did for him in “Casino”. Why Bobby, Why?!?!
Although the night was to honor a legend, some couldn’t help of course zooming on John Mayer. It wasn’t that long ago Katy Perry had admitted in an interview she was still in love with him. Shockingly enough, the pair seemed to have reconciled. Katy skipped the red carpet but was later photographed leaving with John.
