Fifty Shades Of Grey Movie Cast Fears Film Will Be Too Sexy For R-Rating?

When it was first announced that Fifty Shades of Grey would be made into a movie, the biggest question most people had was how the story in the books would translate to screen. Yes, it’s a love story – but it’s also a story about BDSM and sex, and movies nowadays are notoriously risk-averse when it comes to showing sex on-screen.

It’s an understandable reaction. With most of the box office coming from teens and international audiences, to alienate almost half of your movie-going audiences with an R-rating is almost unheard of. That’s why movies like World War Z, which really should have been an R, went for a watered down version to get the rating to PG-13 instead.

With Universal shelling out big bucks to secure the rights to Fifty Shades of Grey, and a lot of expectation riding on the title, it’s clear that they have high hopes for the film. But considering the plot itself revolves around sex – and very visual sex at that – how will the movies manage to even get an R-rating? The book is soft porn, and there’s no way Universal is going to allow the films to be rated NC-17.

The director, Nowhere Boy’s Sam Taylor-Johnson, was hired for her contemporary and edgy style, so here’s hoping that she’s able to retain the vividness of the book without crossing any studio boundaries. Regardless though, I can’t help but feel that the films will inevitably be much less visual than the books – no matter how much they try to stay true to the source material.
