So Fifty Shades of Grey has already been credited for bringing mainstream popularity to BDSM, so will the movie has the same effect? Let’s face it – sex in movies in today’s day and age is decidedly unsexy. You barely see anything, and whatever you do see isn’t realistic in the slightest. In their rush to make everything PG-13 and appeal to the global market, studios have increasingly forsaken adult movies with actual sex and drama for movies about robots and aliens and comic-book heroes.
Now, Twilight brought in a rush of vampire fiction and vampire movies, and the Hunger Games led to the rising popularity of dystopian themed films. So will Fifty Shades of Grey continue the same trend of creating an increasing trend of sex-related films? Look, I don’t propose to know how the filmmakers plan on shooting Fifty Shades of Grey, but there’s absolutely no way they can make it PG-13, and there’s also no way to neuter the sex without alienating the core fan base. I mean, the books are basically about sex, and honestly, not really much else.
There’s also the fact that with Sam Taylor-Johnson directing, the film’s going to be artistic and edgy. So you can expect sex, and probably incredibly well shot sex. So if the film does as well as its currently predicted to do, what does that mean for the market? Well, it could signal a return to normal sex in regular dramas and thrillers, which previously passed over any relationship scenes for the more palatable boom boom scenes filled with explosions. But with proof that the audience doesn’t mind sex, they might be willing to take a chance with their thrillers and dramas. I mean, there’s no chance you’re going to see it in blockbusters, but hey, something’s better than nothing.
