The Golden Globe Awards aren’t necessarily a strong prognosticator of the Oscars, purely because their main categories are divided into Drama and Musical/Comedy. This allows for a lot more choices and more opportunities to honor a diverse cast and film selection, as opposed to packing in five selections for every category. For example, both American Hustle and 12 Years a Slave will likely dominate at the Globes, thanks to both of them leading the nominations and both of them being in separate categories. 12 Years comes under pure drama, whereas Hustle is definitely in the comedy category.
In addition to Twelve Years A Slave, the films under the Best Drama category include Captain Phillips, Gravity, Philomena, and Rush. Out of all of these, Best Picture Oscar nominations for Captain Phillips, Twelve Years A Slave, and Gravity are locked. Philomena and Rush are less likely, but they could very well gain a boost from this and sneak in there.
The films in the Best Musical/Comedy category include American Hustle, Her, Inside Llewyn Davis, Nebraska, and Wolf of Wall Street. Not many surprises, and once again, all of these are expected to make it to the Best Picture Oscar shortlist.
There are no surprises in Best Actress – Drama, apart from Kate Winslet being nominated for Labor Day. It’s unlikely she’ll get nominated at the Oscars due to the lack of split, but it’s a nice honor nonetheless. Best Actor – Drama likewise has the inclusion of Idris Elba in Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom, which is unlikely to make it into the Oscar Best Actor shortlist, but he was able to squeak in there because of the category split.
Best Supporting Actress had one surprising inclusion, in addition to the usual favorites Lupita Nyong’o, Jennifer Lawrence, June Squibb, and Julia Roberts. Instead of favorite Oprah Winfrey, the Golden Globes decided to go with Sally Hawkins for Blue Jasmine. A deserving performance for sure, but Oprah’s snub is definitely a bit surprising. Will the Oscars do the same and snub the mighty O? We’ll find out soon enough.
Best Supporting Actor also had some pleasant surprises, much like the SAG nominations. Barkhad Abdi was nominated for both awards, gaining momentum as a favorite to get nominated for the Oscar. He pretty much stole the movie from Tom Hanks in Captain Phillips, so it’s a deserving nomination. In addition to him, Bradley Cooper also squeaked in a nomination for American Hustle, which is also deserving since many critics are calling him one of the best parts of the movie. The category also includes Daniel Bruhl, Michael Fassbender, and Jared Leto.
Come Golden Globe night, expect to see both Twelve Years A Slave and American Hustle sweep the board with wins, cementing both as the frontrunners for the Oscars. It really depends on what type of movie the voters lean towards: American Hustle is crazy, funny, and messy, and Twelve Years A Slave is grave, emotional, and marks a landmark moment in our culture. It’s an easy choice, but will the Oscar voters be too scared of 12 Years’ inherent darkness to give it a chance?
