For some odd reason, Vanity Fair has managed to grow some balls in the past two years and have been going after celebrities with abandon. VF’s history with Hollywood is long and storied, and it is one of the most long-standing establishments in the magazine world, and VF’s post-Oscar party continues to be one of the hottest tickets in town during awards season.
However, whether because of the evolving nature of celebrity or just because they feel like, they’ve actually been involved in some pretty hard hitting pieces that don’t make Hollywood stars out to be angels. Their expose on Tom Cruise, Scientology, and the creepy auditioning stories became one of their widest read stories when it first released, and it didn’t seem like they cared that they would ruin relations with Tom’s team for good. And it’s not just Tom Cruise that they’ve been going after.
Vanity Fair also had a very hard hitting piece on World War Z and the disastrous behind-the-scenes problems that plagued the film. They weren’t kind to Brad Pitt, the studio, or the movie, and it may have caused some stars to think twice about letting the magazine conduct an article on them.
The latest story in the battle between Vanity Fair and Hollywood comes in the form of Gwyneth Paltrow. It’s not clear what their initial plans were, but Gwyneth refused to be featured on the cover of a story that VF was working on regarding her, and she also refused to be interviewed for it. Not only that, but she actually emailed her acquaintances and friends and asked them NOT to speak to Vanity Fair on her behalf.
According to a source who claims to have read the email, Gwyneth told everyone close to her, “Vanity Fair is threatening to put me on the cover of their magazine. If you are asked for quotes or comments, please decline. Also, I recommend you all never do this magazine again.”
There are many things that VF could have been writing on that wouldn’t have made Gwyneth happy. Some include her marriage and her family, her media image, her Oscar, her career in the past few years, and numerous other things which seem to remain touchy subjects for her.
What do you guys think? Why is Gwyneth so upset with Vanity Fair? For what it’s worth, I wish more magazines acted like Vanity Fair instead of sucking up to Hollywood stars. It would make everyone’s job easier.
