Zoe pokes and prods at Joel trying to diagnose him with mystery maladies since she has no patients thanks to Brick banning her. Wade brings them breakfast and mocks Joel’s preference for egg white and free range. Joel asks Zoe what she’s doing to get herself gainfully employed. She’s schmoozing Brick and the town folk in a two pronged approach. Joel encourages her to open her own practice and she tells him she has to approach it the Southern way.
At a Belle meeting, the other belles get snotty with Lemon and Cricket makes it clear that she’s in charge. Lemon tells her that she’s making a mistake about her flower choice. The belles glare at Lemon and put it to a vote. Everyone but AnnaBeth and Lemon vote for Cricket after Cricket reminds them all that Lemon had the poor judgment to sleep with Meatball.
Joel comes in looking for antihistamines and earplugs but Frank says he runs his other business from 12-2 – his private investigation firm. Brick comes in and mocks Joel and Joel accidentally steps in it by saying that Zoe wants back in “her” practice. That sets Brick off and he tells Joel to tell Zoe she can feel free to start her own practice. He storms out and Joel knows he’s started trouble.
Lavon is upset when he reads that Fillmore might get a minor league baseball team – and worse yet it’s a team that Lavon had courted before. AB tells him that he needs to talk to Brick because he’s friends with the owner of the team. Lavon is so happy he gives her a big smooch.
Zoe is diagnosing people at the Butter Stick when Joel comes in and sits her down. He tells her she really needs to start her own practice. She reminds him they already had that conversation and she asks him what’s changed. He tells her about Brick. They come into Brick’s practice and she sees that he’s turned her office into a gym. They even brought bakery boxes as bribes.
He tells her he’s heard from a bunch of people that she’s been diagnosing on the street and he’s not happy. Zoe reminds him that they were happy in practice together. Brick blows up and Zoe tells him to forget it – that she’ll open her own practice. George shows up then and tells her she can’t. He reminds her she has a non-compete clause in her contract for at least a year.
Joel apologizes but Zoe won’t hear it because he didn’t respect her beautiful Southern two-pronged plan and tells him he’s left her with no prongs!
At the Rammer Jammer, Wade encourages Zoe and tells her she can lay low for 6 months until her non-compete runs out. He tells her to take a sabbatical and she says he’s always on a sabbatical. He says some guys might be offended, but not him. She looks at the crowd and starts diagnosing and he tells her she has to stop it. She’s being tailed by amateur PI/pharmacist Frank! Brick hired him to keep an eye on her.
Lavon brings in a banana cream pie to bribe Brick to talk to the minor league owner. He tells him about the team being available and that he knows Cameron Lynch knows Brick. Brick says he’s being trying to unfriend the woman since before Facebook was invented. Lavon draws a mental picture for Lavon of how great it would be to have a minor league team and that Brick could even throw out the first pitch. Brick agrees to make the call.
George is tutoring Lynly on the LSAT and she’s distracted and asks if they can study outside while she sunbathes. He tells her to quit flirting and focus on studying. He’s very uncomfortable and tells her they are not going to hook up. He says Lavon would kill him and he’s not the guy for her. Lynly tells him she’s going to wear him down. She tells him his eyes are pretty and then Lavon walks in and George hops up in a panic.
Lavon tells George he has urgent town business and he agrees instantly to reschedule with Lynly. Lavon fills him in about the minor league baseball team concept and George is way too enthused. He wants him to look at the land behind Bernard’s barn and a cost-benefit proposal. He tells him it will take three weeks and Lavon tells him he’s got 24 hours and to get busy.
Lemon has the ladies at a meeting (without Cricket) that’s she’s calling “The Resistance” in protest of the Cricket’s regime of “terror.” She tells the ladies she knows they’re scared to speak out but it’s a safe space and she has a plan to depose Cricket. But then Cricket is there and pulls out the By-Laws and accuses her of Belle treason. She says she has to face sanctions of rebellion in order to stay a Belle. Cricket and her minions sweep out triumphantly!
Brick and Lavon chat with Cameron about the baseball team. She asks what the nightlife is like and Lavon starts to answer but she asks for Brick to answer. She interrupts and reminds him of a place they used to go to in college and she flirts shamelessly. She’s very touchy feely too and tells him she heard about his divorce and marriage falling through. Brick gets a call from Frank and he tells him she’s buying a scone. Someone approaches her with an elbow complaint but she tells him she can’t help. Someone sneezes and Zoe blesses her. Frank (code name Mad Dog) hangs up the phone.
Zoe brings Frank a scone and says he looks hungry from following her around. She says she’s going to the laundromat and home and to tell Brick she said – what up. She walks out and he checks out the scone.
Lemon apologizes to Cricket for her behavior and asks her to lift the rebellion sanctions but Cricket refuses. Lemon tells her that she’s not the dictator type and blames the Baker sisters for whispering in her ear. Cricket says what she learned about leading the Belles she learned from Lemon herself. She orders her to clean up graffiti or leave the Belles. Lemon gets snotty but agrees to do the work.
George finds Lynly in her undies on his bed and he screams. He asked what she’s doing and she said she saw it in a movie and he asks what kind of movies she’s been watching. George tells her that Lavon is counting on him and he doesn’t have time for this. She can’t get her zipper done and then he zips his hand into her dress and there’s blood. They agree they can’t call Brick because he’s with Lavon.
Zoe is looking at medical supplies online when Joel comes in. Joel says he got them takeout from Fancy’s and she says she doesn’t care. She tells him she knows why the caged bird sings. He tells her that 20 miles isn’t far and she could set up practice in another city. She says she came back to be Bluebell’s doctor not just any town’s. She gets a call from George and he tells her he has to have a doctor that’s not Brick. Joel asks if she needs him and she tells him if anyone asks to deny he knows where she is.
Zoe heads out but sees Frank is following her when he crashes into some bicycles. She calls Wade and asks for help ditching Frank so she can take care of George. Wade calls and says there’s a mob of kids that says they’re going to loot the store because no one is there and everyone knows where he leaves his spare key. He runs up to Zoe and asks her to stand still for the next 20 minutes and she agrees but as soon as he walks away she runs off.
Zoe sees Lemon in pink coveralls scrubbing graffiti and Lemon tells her that what she’s doing is about tradition. Zoe teases her some more and then leaves. She finally gets to George’s houseboat and they try to tell her they were studying for the LSATs. She reminds him she’s under a non-compete clause and he tells her to shut up and take care of them. She tells him that usually a hand isn’t what’s stuck in a zipper so he should count himself lucky. Just then Lavon calls and he tells the two ladies to shut up.
Cam tells Brick she got a tattoo for her 50th birthday and asks if he wants to see where she got it. George tells Lavon he’s stuck and can’t get away for a couple of hours. George hangs up then screams as Zoe tries to unzip the dress. Lynly asks if blood comes out of spandex.
Brick pulls Lavon away and tells him he’s had enough of Cam. Brick tells him he doesn’t want to be used this way and Lavon says he could see a future where Brick could be a relief pitcher for the team and Brick is entranced and promises to stay through dessert.
George asks Zoe if she knows what she’s doing and she says she’s got to unzip the zipper. George is being rude to Lynly and Zoe chews him out. He tells Zoe that Lynly has troubles and Lynly explains she never picks the right guy. Zoe yanks the zipper down and George almost passes out.
Cam tells Brick if her team settles in Bluebell they can have dessert every night. Frank runs up and interrupts them and tells Brick he lost Zoe and the last time he saw her that she had a bag which might have doctor stuff in it. Brick runs off with Frank as Lavon begs him not to go.
Joel is being ignored at the bar in the RJ and Wade finally waits on him. Joel confesses he’s having a hard time figuring things out. Lavon comes up and tells the two that if either of them know where Zoe is they better give her a heads up that Brick is looking for her and is pissed. Wade grabs Joel and tells him he knows what they have to do and they head out.
[9:09:08 PM] Rachel Rowan: Brick stalks into the practice as Wade and Joel watch. Wade tells him they need to fake a medical emergency to keep Brick occupied while she finishes treating George. Wade asks how Joel’s acting is and he demonstrates and boy is it bad. Joel says he can sell it if that’s what it takes to save Zoe. He tells Wade to punch him in the gut so it will be real. Wade refuses but then Joel goads him into it. He hits him hard and Joel staggers into the practice. Brick asks if he’s faking it and Joel says he thinks he’s going to vomit and Brick’s convinced.
Cam asks Lavon if Brick is coming back and he says he probably had an emergency. Lavon asks her to stay and see the sights and look at the proposed stadium site. She tells him that Brick ditched her for a trip they had planned in college and he stood her up just like he’s doing now. She tells him she’s going to unfriend Brick and they are done. She walks away and Lavon is upset. Wade teases Lemon about her work detail and he tells her she missed a spot.
Zoe stops stitching George up and tells him she won’t finish unless he tells her how to break the non-compete clause that he wrote. He says that he doesn’t know a way out and that Brick isn’t wrong to want to hold it up. He says that when his last partner left (her dad) that he slipped into a funk and she did the same kind of thing by leaving for five months with no advance word.
Brick looks through paperwork when Zoe comes in. She tells him she wins and that he caught her practicing medicine in Bluebell and hands him a check for $350,000. She tells him he needs to wait 10 years to cash it and she says she’s done fighting with him to take her back. She tells him that when she went to New York she didn’t know how much she was going to miss working with him there in Bluebell and says he was not family, but was family-adjacent to her. She says she’s sorry she made him a crabby jerk to everyone in town.
Brick stops her and tells her it’s not just her – it’s everything. He says his marriage to Shelby fell apart, then Magnolia left and then Zoe and he says he’s overworked and his world got smaller and lonelier. He says he did have a plan to turn it around – he was going to hire an associate – not a partner that could work their way up. He asks if she knows anyone who would be interested and she smiles.
The Baker sisters and Cricket come to check out her work and not only did she do the punishment they assigned, but she painted the gazebo too. She also tells them there is some new graffiti and shows them where she wrote in bright lemon yellow “I quit!” AnnaBeth quits too and runs after Lemon. AB says by quitting they just freed up 10 extra hours per week and they head to the RJ to drink to the resistance!
At the RJ, Zoe tells Wade that she’s a doctor again but she’s afraid Joel has run back to New York. He tells her that Joel is trying to help her. She reminds him that Joel mouthed off to Brick and started some trouble. Wade reminds her of all the stupid things she did when she first came to town. Joel comes in and is in pain from the punch and from all the diagnostic tests that Brick forced on him. She asks why he did it and he said he figured it was the Southern way. They kiss and she pulls him onto the dance floor as The Head and the Heart play!
