Kate Middleton has been begged by a TV presenter in Britain to breastfeed her child when he or she arrives. Ridiculous? Well, that’s how much influence the Royal family has.
Beverley Turner wrote a long and extensive article in the Telegraph asking Kate to consider breastfeeding her child to set an example for the women in England, where studies show that breastfeeding has reportedly dropped to an all-time low. Turner explains that there’s a stigma attached to breastfeeding these days, and implores Kate to help get rid of it.
She wrote, “We also need women with power and influence to get their milky bosoms out and feed smiling in paparazzi pictures. Celebrity is depressingly powerful in dictating trends.”
She added, “As if there wasn’t enough pressure on her already, what we really need is The Duchess of Cambridge to get her Royal orbs out to feed our future monarch. And to be applauded – not seethed at – for doing so.”
I think most people remain firmly of the belief that breast-feeding is a personal choice, although I do have to agree that celebrities are ‘depressingly powerful in dictating trends’. Whether Kate has the power to influence an entire nation’s population of women, I don’t know, but I’m sure there are some woman at least that will be influenced.
Kate is due to give birth on July 14th, and I’m sure we’ll start getting minute-to-minute updates as soon as she goes into labor. What do you guys think? Do you think that Kate should breastfeed her child or not? And do you agree that celebrities dictate trends, especially when it comes to child care?
