Let’s talk birthing terminology here. I’m just wondering if any moms or pregnant women out there are as confused about Kate Middleton and Kim Kardashian’s use of the words “natural birth” as much as I am. I don’t think they’re using it correctly or, at the smuttiest, they’re misapplying it on purpose.
Much has been made over the Kim Kardashian natural childbirth. Kate Middleton is also supposed to have elected the natural route and has been deemed not too posh to push. Here is where I’m confused. I thought natural birth meant no drugs and not too much intervention. Kim and Kate had/want vaginal births meaning no c-sections. This is an important distinction considering many women with enough money and vanity opt for c-sections to avoid hips from spreading further and their biscuits from utter ruin. Too much information? Sorry. This is just interesting to me at the moment because it seems like a lot of misinformation is getting out there and Kate and Kim are benefiting. They are getting slaps on the back for having babies out of their vadges. Well congrats for doing it the old fashioned way!
Hey, I get childbirth is tough and I understand that many women have c-sections because they have to but should we really be excited for two extremely wealthy women who are deigning to pass a baby out of their crotch instead of paying to have it taken from their bellies (and then having their bellies tightly sewn back up in a lovely tummy tuck)?
Perhaps I’m wrong. Let me know. I thought the proper terminology was epidural or other medications vs. natural and vaginal vs. c-section. This is the only way this makes sense to me. I can get behind Kim Kardashian having a vaginal birth but I can never believe she did it without medication.
Now… what does this matter? Maybe not much in the normal world but it’s a big deal in the mommy world right now. There is (and probably forever will be) a major row over whether medications to lessen pain are harmful to the baby or, to a lesser extent, affect the baby at all. Personally, I could care less what people choose. It’s a personal decision and none of my business. But if you’re going to go around shouting that you had a natural birth like you’re some kind of celebrity superwoman hero then I think a distinction should be made. It’s one thing to have a vaginal birth. It’s quite another to do it with no pain killers. I think we can all agree on that.
I’m just wondering if Kate and Kim know the dis or if they are purposefully not making it so as to appear more common and ordinary and, dare I say it, super mom-esque.
Let me know what you think!
