A Fugee is free. Lauryn Hill has been released from jail a few days earlier than expected. The eight-time Grammy winner was convicted of tax evasion and to sentenced to three months in jail. It also happens to be the same prison in the hit Netflix show, Orange is the New Black.
Hill plead guilty to not paying taxes on $1.8 million between 2005 and 2007. She removed herself from the public eye during this time and explained how the situation became bigger than she intended on her Tumbr account.
“I put my safety, health and freedom and the freedom, safety and health of my family first over all other material concerns! I also embraced my right to resist a system intentionally opposing my right to whole and integral survival.“
Being in jail has not stopped her from creating more music. She released her newest single, “Consumerism,” yesterday. The song speaks about the current state of society, a topic has been very outspoken about.
“I felt the need to discuss the underlying socio-political, cultural paradigm as I saw it.”
Hill has also signed a deal with Sony music to create her own label and a new album is also reportedly in works. Hill may be out of jail but her sentence is not complete. She will now be confined to her home for three months.
