There was a lot of hope out there for the new Princess Diana biopic, entitled Diana, but the film ultimately took a major nosedive at the box office, bringing in an estimated $64,914 from 38 theaters. Some critics are calling it “car crash” cinema and are warning royal fans to stay away, as the film doesn’t do much justice to anyone or anyone’s story.
Naomi Watts stars in the lead role and, while she’s a decent actress, sometimes it just doesn’t matter how good of an actor you are — if the story’s not there, well, all hope’s lost.
The Hollywood Reporter says, “Diana opened a month ago in the U.K., where it also bombed (one British reviewer called it “car crash” cinema). Entertainment One, which is distributing the film in the U.S. and a number of other key markets, including the U.K., is hoping Diana finds an afterlife on DVD, VOD and other digital platforms.”
This movie never even really registered in my mind as a theater movie; something in my mind always just assumed I’d, someday, watch it on TV — perhaps on Lifetime. What about you? Will you try to catch this royal flop sometime soon? Or can you live without it?
