You know you’re running a pointless show when you have Selena Gomez as your star performer. Sure, Selena brings in a certain demographic that advertisers love, but she also can’t sing. Yes, Macklemore and Ryan Lewis performing brought a level of authenticity that has been missing from MTV for a long time, but they managed to undo all that when Selena came in and gave an absolutely terrible performance – both in terms of the actual singing and the dance.
People on Twitter exploded after the performance, and even the youtube comments from Selena fans haven’t been kind to her. Several said that she didn’t nail any of the notes, and one even added that just because she’s good looking doesn’t mean that she can sing. Several others on Twitter also commented on her performance, and many criticized her for wearing a bindi and the blatant cultural appropriation that she exhibited.
One fan wrote, “The bindi is not just some fashion accessory you can throw on.” Another wrote, “CULTURAL APPROPRIATION AT IT’S FINEST, MY RESPECT FOR SELENA IS FADING AS WE SPEAK.” A third fan tweeted, “Selena Gomez, take that bindi of (sic) your head, cultural appropriation is not cute.”
Gomez has not responded to the criticism, but the performance did cause the term ‘cultural appropriation’ to trend on Twitter.
This isn’t the first time Selena has drawn fire for her live performances. Although her songs themselves are catchy and usually make the top 40, her live performances have always been lackluster. It’s clear, even to her fans, that she can’t sing well during live shows, and she has a long way to go before she can. Unfortunately, MTV doesn’t think about stuff like that, and they decided it’s easier to allow Selena to be the star of the show than try to actually bring in good music for a change. Although they failed there – Selena didn’t end up being the star of the show. No, that honor belonged to the Catching Fire Trailer. As Michael K from Dlisted said, this mess of an awards show should have been called ‘The Catching Fire Trailer Event’, featuring dumbass performances and meaningless awards categories.
