The Oscars are the biggest day of the year for the movie industry, but it’s also the biggest day of the year for fashion. The red carpet fashion is so important that E! and other television channels devote air time to the arrival of the celebrities specifically to look at their clothes. Male celebrities are graded but for females every detail from neckline to hem is reported on like the color commentary of an NBA game. One thing I’m sure that will be talked about is the trend of side-boob. Showing side-boob has been a trend for the past 2 years and shows no signs of slowing down.
No two women use the side-boob trend the same way. For some female celebrities showing side-boob is a must. Women like Miley Cyrus and Rihanna who like to be exhibitionists will use side-boob to show skin but still be able to go out in public. You will see them show off their breasts when running errands as well as on the red carpet. Others, like Katy Perry, are fashion risk takers looking for different ways to show off their hot bodies. They will reserve the side boob for performances, special events or photo shoots. Tina Fey told USA Today showing cleavage is ok for photo shoots but “Photos are a controlled environment. I would not walk around with it.”
But you don’t have to be sex pot to show off side boob. For some women showing side-boob is a strategic move. Selena Gomez wore a dress showing off side-boob at the Spring Breakers premiere. This film was her first grown up acting project. I’m thinking she felt she had to wear a dress that matched the grown up nature of the film. Selena is dressed appropriately and sexy at such events, but this is a huge step for her very conservative image. We will have to see if Selena’s side boob will be a new thing for her or a one time thing. Another example is Mila Kunis. In the March issue of Allure Mila said about her lack of wardrobe in the film Friends with Benefits “I showed side boob. I don’t need to show a**. You get one or the other. You don’t get both.”
I consulted Melinda Murphy, owner of Cheveux Luxueux in Atlanta, Ga, for her insight on the side-boob trend. Melinda feels for a fashion trend to really have an impact someone unexpected would wear it and push it to a new level. What if someone like Emmanuelle Riva wore a dress that showed side-boob tonight’s Acadamy Awards (tonight is also Emmanuelle’s 86th birthday!)? What would her wearing a dress like that say to the fashion world? Would Emmanuelle be considered eccentric due to her age, or would she be hailed as a fashion risk taker for older women? Melinda and I agree that side boob on Emmanuelle would be terrific! It would show she is a woman who thinks outside the box, and not wearing what she is supposed to wear due to her age.
Allston Kendall of Atlanta, Ga hosts an annual red carpet viewing and Oscar party. She summed up the side-boob trend as something that should be worn with class. “I say if you’ve got it, then work it, so long as it’s done tastefully. It shouldn’t look like your dress is ill-fitted or that the side-boob is accidental. It should be clear that it is part of an overall, calculated look.” Good advice, Allston! If only everyone took your advice!
