THE VAMPIRE DIARIES returns to the CW tonight with a whole new episode called, “True Lies.” On tonight’s episode, after learning that Silas is searching for Katherine, Damon asks Matt and Jeremy to keep her out of sight, but the situation quickly spirals out of control. On last week’s episode, after spending the summer enjoying her passionate relationship with Damon, and making sure that Jeremy was adjusting after his return from the dead, Elena was thrilled to move into the dorm at nearby Whitmore College with her new roommate, Caroline. Still believing that Bonnie had been traveling all summer and would soon join them, Elena and Caroline were surprised when a student named Megan showed up and announced that she would be sharing their dorm room. Katherine made an unexpected appearance at the Salvatore house and pled with Damon to help her now that she was human and vulnerable to her enemies.
On tonight’s show without telling Elena that Stefan is missing, Damon turns to Sheriff Forbes for help finding his brother. Elena and Caroline try to find out who is covering up a campus murder, and a fellow Whitmore student named Jesse (guest star Kendrick Sampson) gives Elena some intriguing information about Professor Wes Maxfield (guest star Rick Cosnett). While Jeremy struggles to return to his old life, he continues to be the only person who can see and talk to Bonnie, but he can’t convince her that it’s time to let the others know that she sacrificed her own life for his. After learning that Silas is searching for Katherine, Damon asks Matt and Jeremy to keep her out of sight, but the situation quickly spirals out of control. Finally, Nadia (guest star Olga Fonda) uses violence to make a point about her own agenda. Joshua Butler directed the episode written by Brian Young.

Bonnie tells Jeremy what Silas did mentally manipulating the whole town and murdering her father. She wants him to hug her but he can’t touch her. She laments the death of her dad and says that as a non-supernatural he’s really dead so she can’t see him. She tells Jeremy that the whole town is looking for Katherine on behalf of Silas and they can’t let him have her.
Katherine staggers out into the street and a car stops for her. The woman recognizes her as looking like Elena and tells her that she’s supposed to be looking for her. The women maces her and Katherine beats her down but is surprised at how much it hurts her human hand. Matt comes out with a shotgun and traps her there.
Elena and Stefan are visiting in his dream state. He tells her these are the moments that keep him from falling apart. She kisses him and tells him he’s just distracting herself. She chokes and begins to spit up water and then he’s back in his watery grave.
At the college campus, people are putting flowers on a memorial to Megan. Caroline gripes and says she was only on campus a couple of days. She’s mad about Tyler ditching her and college. Elena wants to focus on the Megan mystery. She got a copy of the death certificate and it said suicide and made no mention of the bite marks on her neck. Turns out it was their science professor that signed off on the death certificate.
Caroline is mad that they’re enrolled in science. She wanted to take theatre classes but Elena says they have to infiltrate to not get called out as vamps.
Sheriff Liz tells Damon that she can’t drain the whole quarry to try and find Stefan. She’s not happy but agrees to put some deputies on it.
Jeremy calls in to tell Damon that Katherine’s been found by Matt. He tells him that he thinks Silas has mind melded the townfolk to hunt her down. Damon tells him to keep her locked down. Jeremy is mad that she wrecked his car and left him for dead. She says it’s what she has to do. They tie her up and Matt tells her to stow it. She’s upset because she’s just a pawn in their game.
In science class, the party guy asks them how they got into the advanced microbiology class. They laugh it off and he invites them to a bonfire that night. Elena encourages her to check him out since Tyler isn’t around.
Their cutie pie professor Max comes in and is snarky from the start. He talks to them about disease in the Civil War and explains that bonfires began when they had to burn diseased corpses. He tells them to think of the smell of rotting burning flesh when they are partying at the bonfire that night. Elena whispers to Caroline that he’s hot but he hears the noise and calls them out as chatty freshman girls who don’t belong and then kicks them to the curb and tells them to take it down the hall to Biology 101.
Elena calls in to Damon who encourages her to use nefarious means to get info from Professor Max about whether he knows anything about vamps. She doesn’t want to play dirty and he reminds her that she’s dating a reformed serial killer.
Elena see and then tells him that Stefan is there on campus and before Damon can warn her that it’s actually Silas, the Stefan clone messes with her mind and tells her to turn off her phone and she does. Silas/Stefan tells her he’s sorry he hasn’t called and wanted to apologize in person. She hugs him and tells him that she was worried something terrible happened and he tells her it did – she fell in love with his brother.
He tells her he’s been busy and that Damon will tell her about it but says he’s been busy with Jeremy problems. He tattles to her about Jeremy getting expelled because of a major fight. She asks where Jeremy is and he says he doesn’t know and was hoping that she knew where he is. She comes unglued.
Matt, Jeremy and Katherine stop at a convenience store and she begs for a bathroom break and then sends them into the store to get her medicine because of her incident with the mace. She tries to sneak out of the bathroom and the store clerk sees her and thinks she’s Elena – he’s another of Silas’ minions. He pulls out a shotgun and Matt has to wrestle him for it and knock him out. Jeremy grabs Elena and orders her to stop running.
Damon walks into the dorm room unannounced and catches Caroline undressed. She yells at him and he tells her that no one cares. He demands to know where Elena is and she says that she’s gone to get intel on their professor. He tells her that Silas is there on campus looking like Stefan. He tells her to get dressed so they can go. She tells him that all summer Elena has been having weird visions and feelings about Stefan.
Stefan is calling Jeremy from Elena’s phone and says he’s still not answering. He tells her he’s going to hang onto her phone and keep trying him. She’s upset that Damon lied to her about Jeremy. He gets a text from one of his minions saying Katherine was spotted on Route 9. He lies and tells her that Jeremy was seen on Route 9 and asks where he might be headed. She tells him there’s an old campsite they used to go to near there. Then she stops and asks him who texted him. He doesn’t answer. Damon is closing in on them!
Stefan calls out to Damon “hello brother” and then says distant nephew is probably more accurate. Damon demands to know where Elena is and Silas tells him that he’ll find her eventually. He tells him he knows why he likes her but doesn’t understand why she likes him. Damon tells him he doesn’t get it because he’s never had sex with him. Silas is amused and Damon wants to know why he’s there. Silas says telling him why here’s there and what he’s done will ruin all the fun. He tells him to enjoy the bonfire and takes off.
The bonfire is in full force and Carolina and Damon still haven’t found Elena. She tells Damon that if he had been honest with her about Jer this wouldn’t have happened. He thanks her for her hindsight. Elena is trying to serve up a beer and then there’s a guy at her side (Jessie – the party dude) there to help her. She guzzles the beer as he looks on in shock and she tells him it’s boyfriend drama.
She asks about professor “Dickfield” and he tells her to come get more firewood with him and he’ll tell her everything. He tells her there’s a rumor that he’s in a secret society that meets a few times a week at Whitmore House. He tells her that he didn’t hear it from him. Then he’s on the floor because Damon has knocked him out. Caroline tells him that she likes him – not happy that he struck himdown.
Matt, Katherine and Jeremy are at a campsite and she’s freezing, sick and miserable. She tells Jeremy that she survived childbirth and 500 years on the run from an immortal psycho hybrid and she’s upset that she’s about to be felled by a sinus infection. Matt is in the woods gathering firewood when Silas comes upon him and tells him he can’t talk but Matt defies his mind trick and yells to Jeremy to run.
Silas is intrigued and ants to know why he can’t get inside his head. He grabs Matt’s head and does a mind meld. Matt’s eyes go black as Silas sees a vision of a woman. He tells Matt that he can’t get in his head because someone is already in there and asks “the traveler” why they are watching him. He snaps Matt’s neck! Matt wakes later and tries to figure out where he is. He calls to Jeremy who goes running by with Katherine but doesn’t stop or seem to see him.
Bonnie is there then telling Matt that the void is tricky. He asks her where the hell he is. She tells him he’s on the other side – the Gilbert ring brought him there temporarily when he died. She says that he has to reconnect with his body to come back to life. He tells her that he can’t see his body and she tells him each time he dies he gets further and further from his body and has to travel further on the other side to get back to it. He asks her how Bonnie can see him if he’s on the other side. She tells him that he needs to know something about her.
Damon and Elena come into her room and he tells her that before she gets mad they need to talk. She throws him in a chair, kisses him roughly and rips his clothes off. She ties him up and forces a bottle of vervain water down his throat. She ties him down thoroughly as he asks who got into her head and what she was told to do to him. She says – get you alone, weaken you and kill you!
[9:11:31 PM] Rachel Rowan: She shoves more vervain water down his mouth and he spits it at her to stop her from staking him. She snaps out of it and apologizes for hurting him. He tells her that Silas is masquerading as Stefan and he isn’t in the quarry like they thought. She demands to know what happened to Stefan. He asks if they can talk about it when she doesn’t have a murder look in her eyes. She says she wants to kill him every time she looks at him. He tells her that Silas is using her anger at him as a trigger. She starts to attack again and he tells her to fight it. She finally stabs herself in the leg with the wooden stake to clear her mind. Through her pain she asks him what’s going on.
Back in the woodshed, Caroline is comforting the now-conscious Jessie. She tells him that Damon has anger issues and he says it’s okay because it got them alone. He brushes hair back from her cheek and they share a look and then she tells him she has a boyfriend. He asks where he is and she tells him that he deferred a semester. She tells him that she knows what he is going to say – that long distance doesn’t work. He tells her that sometimes it does and sometimes your girlfriend back home sleeps with someone else. She realizes Jessie is talking about his own sitch and she offers sympathy.
Jeremy and Katherine run up to the truck and he tells her to get it in the car and drive. She asks where he’s going and he says he’s going back for Matt. She tells him she survived for so long not because she was a vampire but because she never looked back. He tells her that’s why people treat her the way they do. He jogs back into the woods for his friend leaving her there.
Bonnie tells Matt that being dead isn’t so bad because she has Jeremy and gets to see her Grams sometimes. She tells him she’ll be okay if she can just get past these next few days. Matt tells her that it’s not okay – that she died and her dad died. She tells him she has to get through and he tells her he’s so sorry. He holds her and she breaks down crying because she’s sad and yet glad that someone is touching her.
Jer finds Matt’s body but he’s still out. Silas is waiting there and says that since Jeremy isn’t crying, Matt must not really be dead. He guesses it must be the tacky ring. Jeremy tells him he won’t find out from him because he can’t read his mind. Silas says if he can’t read his mind, Jeremy’s not useful and he may as well kill him. Jeremy tells him he can try but reminds him that his abilities won’t work on him. He says he’s slower and weaker than a vampire – he’s nothing. He reminds him that he’s a hunter and he works out. He throws a knife at Silas and then charges him!
Silas fights back and Jeremy tries harder. Silas head butts him and Jeremy goes to break his neck. Silas reminds him that he’s immortal and stabs a stick through his body and into Jeremy. He grabs up Jeremy’s weapon and goes to kill him but then there’s a noise and Silas goes down. Katherine has the shotgun and shoots him again for good measure. Jer says –I though you didn’t know how to use that – and she says – I learned!
Damon tells Elena that Bonnie’s dad is dead and she’s mad he didn’t tell her before. She asks him what the hell is wrong with him – keeping things from him – Jeremy getting expelled and now him having Jer play white knight to Katherine who has tried many times to kill her. He tell her that he was protecting Jeremy. He tells her to calm down – reminding her the anger is the trigger. She’s crying and says that Stefan has been in agony while she’s been rolling around in bed all summer with a self-proclaimed serial killer.
Elena is struggling for control. She’s getting mad and breaks the gas line. He tells her to focus and break Silas’ compulsion or she’s going to kill them both. He tells her to think of something stronger. She’s lighting matches and failing and he tells her to think about Stefan. To think about the feeling she’s been having about him. He asks her to describe it. She says he’s in pain, scared and lonely. She cries. She says – we have to find him and Damon tells her they will. He swears it to her and she calms down. She says the rage is gone.
Caroline comes in and finds the crazy scenario with Damon shirtless and tied up and the blood. She tells her they need to set some ground rules for when boyfriends come to visit.
Bonnie and Matt are headed for his body and they find it. He tells her that if history is a clue, the second he’s back in his body he’ll forget about it. He tells her that she and Jeremy can’t keep her death a secret anymore. He tells her she can’t deal with her dad’s death if she can’t deal with her own. Matt touches his body and then he’s alive. Katherine welcomes him back to the land of the living. He asks what happened and Jer says Silas killed him and tried to kill Jeremy but Katherine gunned him down. She says they need to go.
Jer says he needs his hatchet and needs to go back and get it because he sees Bonnie in the woods. She says she’s not ready to admit she’s dead and doesn’t know what she’s going to do when the Sheriff tries to call to tell her that her dad is dead. Jer says he’ll cover for her and that he’ll do anything he can for her.
Silas walks up to the convenience store and finds the clerk beaten and abused. He asks if he found the girl he was looking for. He says that he did and she shot him so now he’s angry and hungry. He tells him that he can help with one of those. He produces a knife and a cup and tells the guy to fill her up. He mind freaks him and the guy slices his arm and starts to fill it. Then the door opens and a guy and a girl walk in. Silas looks at them and says – oh goodie, the gypsies are here. He says they call themselves travelers now because it’s PC.
The guy says he can call him whatever he likes while he guts him and pulls out a knife. He tells him he knows he’s mad that he killed their host they were using to spy on him (Matt) but that’s what you get. He says congrats, you find me – now what? The guy says they want him sealed back in the tomb. The girl says – that’s what the travelers have always wanted. She kills her buddy and says – luckily for him she’s never truly considered herself one of them.
She tells him she knows he can see inside her mind and that she has her own agenda. He looks and says – yes, I see that you do.
Elena packs up and tells Caroline that she’ll be back. Caroline reassures her that she’ll find Stefan. Professor Max walks up and says he’s surprised that Elena Gilbert is giving up. He apologies for being a hard ass. He asks to confirm whether she’s Grayson Gilbert’s daughter and she’s surprised to learn her knew her dad.
He says he studied all his research and hopes to do just part of what he did. She asks him if he usually forges death certificates and he says he thought she was only interested in microbiology. He tells her to come see him in office hours and she tells him she has too much stuff on her plate. He tells her to come see him when it clears. Damon is there and asks her if she’s not curious about the creepy professor and she says that she can’t stay knowing Stefan is out there and Caroline will just have to take over. He hands her Stefan’s daylight ring that he stole from Silas. He says he’s confident enough in their relationship that he’s not threatened by her having dreams about Stefan. She tells him she loves him and still will after they find Stefan. They are kissing when Damon gets a call from Liz – they ound something.
It’s a safe. Liz says if Stefan has been in there for three months he’ll be hungry. Damon opens it and finds a body – but it’s not Stefan. Damon says Stefan will still be hungry. They look around nervously.
