Last night’s The Vampire Diaries episode was a hot one. We begin with a review of Episode 9, “The Cell” and then offer our video sneak peak and synopsis of the Episode 10, “Fifty Shades of Grayson.”
June 11,1953- Damon is looking for Joseph in Mystic Falls. Damon finds him at his house. Apparently Joseph sent him a telegraph, Stefan as well. Joseph stabs Damon with a syringe tell him the money was to good to pass up. Damon manages to muster up enough strength to ram a glass of scotch through his neck. In walks a man who suspiciously looks like the poser Todd Manning from One Life to Live (Trevor St. John.) I’ll be calling him Todd for the duration. He tells Damon he won’t have to pay Joseph since you know he is dead on the wooden floor. He tells Damon he will be his doctor from now on and knocks him out.
Present- Damon comes to, he is in a cell he sees Maxfield above him and askmji what he is doing. Maxfield tells him he lost his test subject last night and surprise Damon is taking him place. He walks out of the cell and locks it.
Katherine is sitting down writing in a diary. Katherine writes about how Stefan stopped her from killing herself, has her on suicide watch and how it’s therapeutic for her to write down her feelings. The look on her face tells you she clearly isn’t buying it. Deep thoughts, mortal coil, blah,blah,blah, my hand is tired. Katherine rips the page out, wads it up and throws it. She ask Stephan what kind of idiot writes down their thoughts. Stefan tells her he is just there to,watch her and make sure she doesn’t kill herself. Katherine ask him how he is going to do that when he is still having issues from spending three months in a cell at the bottom of a quarry. Katherine ask him how he is going to help her when he can’t even help himself. Stefan ask her if that means she wants to live. Katherine tells him no it just means she can’t work with people who don’t give her 100%.
Caroline shows up at his front door with the safe he was in. She tells him not to worry she sanitized it.
Elena is at Aaron’s. He wants to know if she heard Jesse is dead. Did she hear it? She is the one that offed him. She feigns shock and plays the I’m sorry card. Aaron tells,her he though college would be better. Elena tells him she gets it. Aaron ask her what she wants. Elena tells him that her boyfriend went to talk to Maxfield last night and she hasn’t heard from him since. Aaron tells her he knows a place they can look.
Back in his cell Damon is issuing threats to Maxfield even though he can barely move. Maxfield is as usual taking notes only this time he prefers a pen and paper. Maxfield wants to know of that’s what he told Dr. Whitmore. You know Todd.
There’s a flashback of Damon with Dr.Whitmore. Damon is strapped to a table in what looks to be a little hole in the wall lab. Damon tries to compel him to let him free but it’s a no go, the doc is wearing vervain. He gives Damon a checkup of sorts. He tells Damon that this is for the advancement of science. Damon ask him what he is talking about. The doctor tells him he is a vampire and thus his body can regenerate the internal organs he removes. Damon starts talking again which makes the doc angry and he stabs him in the eye with a scalpel. The doc then tells Damon he talks to much,takes off his restraints and the flips him onto the floor.
Back in the cell Damon tells Maxfield he sees the Augustine freaks or still at it. Maxfoeld tells him his research goes far beyond that and that he taught Jesse to crave vampire blood instead of human blood which I still maintain is genius. Maxfield tells Damon he is thinking about taking it to the next level. Maxfield walks away. Damom sits there with a dumb look for a minute but the his eyes start to widen indicating he knows exactly what Maxfield is planning to do.
Aaron and Elena arrive at the Whitmore house. Aaron has to invite her in. Aaron tells her that this is house and that he is in fact Aaron Whitmore. Elena notices a man in a picture on the wall and she tells Aaron it’s her dad. Maxfield pops up and tells her that her father was one of the greatest doctors they ever had. He them proceeds to shove a syringe in Elena’s neck. Aaron looks on freaked out.
Caroline wants Stefan to get back in the safe. Stefan is not happy about it.
Aaron is tripping the freak out fantastic with Maxfield. He can’t believe he is has just kidnapped Elena. Maxfield points out its more like a tranquilizer. Maxfield explains to him he only told a little white lie on Megan’s death certificate so that he could continue playing Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. Maxfield tells him that not only are vampires the real deal but that Elena is also one. Aaron thinks he is out of his damn mind. Maxfield opens a safe it’s full of pointy things, a gun, some bullets, which I always thought were for werewolves. Aaron wants to know where the vampire kill safe came from. Maxfield tells him that Whitmore house has been doing this for generations. He tells Aaron that his father trained him, and that this is Aaron’s legacy.
Damon is trying to wake Elena who is in a cell nearby. You think he could later get a few minutes of sleep, so impatient that one. Elena comes around and she sits up. Elena wants to know what is going on. Damon tells her that Maxfield is continuing the Augustine tradition of torturing vampires. Elena wants to know if Maxfield told him that. Damon tells her no but the he didn’t have to because he has been there before.
Que the flashback of him being cut open and things being taken out of him.
Damon tell her he was kept in that very cell and to not think he doesn’t appreciate the irony. Elena ask him how long he was there. Damon tells her five years. She ask how he didn’t go crazy. Has it been proven that he isn’t? Damon tells her believe it or not he made a friend.
Flashback time again. Damon gets thrown in a cell next to this guy who is definitely high up on the hottie scale. Damon tells Elena his name was Enzo and he was a solider during world war 2 and that Whitmore drugged him, shoved him in a coffin and them shipped him overseas.
Back we go. Enzo is showing Damon how to drink his blood the correct way and he should be looking towards the future and revenge on Whitmore. Damon pulls it together and tells Enzo he can see it.
Elena thinks she has a story that will top that. She tells Damon her dad was a Augustine and worked with Maxfield. Elena is having a hard time coming to grips,with the fact her father would work with people who cut vampire peepers out. Damon offers her the good old people are full of surprises line. Elena puts her head down and cries. Damon reaches through the bars and tells her he is sorry he got her caught up in this. Damon promises he will get her out of there. Elena takes his hand.
Stefan is in his death safe. He ask Caroline if she knows what she is doing. Caroline tells him yes or at least her textbook does, she flips some pages. Katherine is standing in the doorway watching. Katherine ask Caroline if her and Stefan have ever done the nasty. Caroline tells her no they are just friends. Katherine tells her that it’s her loss, Stefan is great in bed. Caroline tries to tune her out. Caroline seems to think prolonged exposure therapy will do the trick. Katherine not so much. While those two bicker. Stefan freaks out, hyperventilates and then passes out. Katherine is asking Caroline how you help the guy who is always coming to the rescue. Katherine gets a idea.
Damon is doing the whole stuck with needles, cut open, body parts removed, stabbed in the eyes memory lane in his head. When Elena snaps him back into reality. She ask how he survived. Damon tells her Enzo. They would talk about cars, sports, and women. Whitmore comes to get Damon but Enzo convinces him to take him instead. Damon can hear Enzo screaming as the lights go off. Whitmore eventually brings Enzo back. Daemon want to know what’s up doc. Whitmore tells himhe is trying to understand them in a cellular level. Elena tells Damon that Stefan will find them. Damon gives her points for being optimistic but tells her it’s not going to happen because Stefan doesn’t even know the place exist. Elena wants to know how he escaped, Damon tells her that they would chain them up and put them on display at their New Year’s Eve party. Whitmore would allow the guest to drink from them and that is how the plan was conceived. So here’s the plan, they decide that one of them will drink both glasses of blood so one of them will be strong enough by the next New Years to escape. Damon wins and for a year he drinks his and Enzo’s glass of blood. Elena ask if it worked. I like how she ask a dumb question in the answer is obvious.
Maxfield gives Aaron a watch that belonged to his grandfather. He see some newspaper and realizes that his parents were killed by vampires. Maxfield ask Aaron to join him. Aaron would much rather punch him in the face and snag some weapons and get the hell outta there.
Back in the safe that Silas built Katherine is telling Stefan not to be anger with her. She had Caroline lock her in with Stefan when he passed out. On a side note that safe looks awfully spacious. Stefan starts screaming for Caroline. Caroline knows it’s a little extreme but screw the baby steps that weren’t working. Katherine tells him to take a chill pill otherwise he is going to get anxious and do something rash like rip a head off. Katherine tells him he is Stefan Salvatore and to suck it up.
Elena is tripping out because she thinks she is next on the chopping gurney. Elena is insistent he finish the story about the plan. Damon doesn’t want to, but since she won’t shut up and promises her undying love he tells her. It goes like this, at the next New Years party she Whitmore unlocks the cage Damon returns the favor of gouging him in the eyes and the bites him. Guest are running and screaming a candelabra gets knocked over and a fire starts. Enzo yells for Damon to get him out but he can’t because the cell doors are covered in vervain, which you would think after five years they would have already known. Damon can’t get him out and even though Enzo begs him to scr his life Damon leaves.
Katherine is explaining to Stefan how Damon and Elena are his problem. He grabs Katherine by the neck and threatens to kill her. Katherine gives him the atta boy speech and remind him he loved her before he hated her. Stefan wants to know why she picked this moment to have this conversation. Katherine tells him that his problem isn’t the safe it’s the fact he can’t get over Elena leaving him. Stefan goes to bite her neck and she tells him to fight it. Katherine gets closer to him and tells him she is right there with him. She puts her hands on his face and tell him she isn’t going anywhere. It gets pretty close to a kiss between them but then Caroline opens the safe and they both move away from each other. Stefan gets up and the helps Katherine up. Caroline hugs him and tells him he made it out alive. Stefan looks over his shoulder at Katherine.
Aaron is down at the cells. He finds Elena and Damon. Elena is happy to see him. Damon calls him mini Wes. Aaron thinks Elena killed Megan. Elena corrects him she was killed in the Whitmore house and Elena could enter it until today. Aaron points the gun at her and tells her that vampires killed his parents and that he wants to know why she was so interested in him. Damon tells him to calm down that he killed Aaron’s parents. Aaron points the gun at Damon and says start talking. Damon tells him how after the fire that killed Enzo he did what he said he would do he would let one live long enough to have children and then he would kill them one by one. Damon tells him since 1958 he has killed so many he lost count. Elena ask she the last one was. Damon says it was a few months ago and that her name was Sarah, he had to go all the way to Charleston to find her. Aaron shoots him in the head and Damon falls, Elena screams no.
Caroline is trying to pick up the safe to no avail and yells for help, nobody comes. Stefan is in the study getting ready to throw the broken chair into the fire. Katherine comes in and admits Katherine is right. Katherine puts her hand on his chest runs it up and down and then they kiss, that kiss is leading to something.
Caroline calls Elena to leave her a message when she hears Stefan and Katherine getting it on.
Aaron calls Maxfield and ask him what he is supposed to do. Maxfield tells him to keep living his life. Aaron puts on his grandfathers watch.
Damon wakes up with quite the headache and admits he had that coming. Damon realizes Elena is gone and he freaks out and starts calling her name.
Elena comes to strapped to a bed. She tries to break free, she notices the vampire next to her and ask what is going on. He introduces himself as Enzo and the. Starts singing after midnight. Elena’s face says it all.
Next week’s episode, titled “Fifty Shades of Grayson,” will continue to explore the mysteries of Whitmore College and reveal more about crazy-genius Dr. Maxfield. What’s his deal? Something everyone’s been wondering for a while now. We’ll have to tune in next week to find out for sure, but from what we’ve seen, he has an unusual connection to vampires and a secret order concealed within the ranks of the college. Future pics reveal that he’ll finally trap Elena and turn her into a test subject.

The brothers pay a visit to Aaron (guest star Shaun Sipos), and Damon shocks Stefan by revealing his first-hand knowledge of Aaron’s family. In an attempt to stop Damon, Dr. Wes (guest star Rick Cosnett) unleashes his secret weapon, forcing Damon to deal with a part of his past he thought was gone forever, as well as the consequences of his decades-long plan for revenge. Meanwhile, Elena is horrified by Dr. Wes’ confessions about the dark history of Whitmore College and his own ultimate goal. Finally, a frantic Katherine (Nina Dobrev) turns to Matt (Zach Roerig) for help, until she realizes that Nadia (guest star Olga Fonda) may be the one who can solve her problem.
