The Voice RECAP 10/28/13: Season 5 “The Knockouts, Part 1”

THE VOICE is one of our favorite singing reality competitions because the judges – definitely have a good time and are even quite funny. Tonight, The Voice season 5 will be returning for “The Knockouts, Part 1”  on tonight’s show Xtina, Blake, CeeLo and Adam must cut their teams by half by pairing their remaining artists in head-to-head duels.  There was some amazing battles on last week’s show. In case you missed it, check out our LIVE RECAP — CLICK HERE.

On last night’s show it was the final night of Season 5’s battle rounds, matching the incredible talent in head-to-head duets with songs chosen specifically by the artists’ coaches. Six battles remained, but only CeeLo had a steal left.

On tonight’s show the “knockout rounds” begin with coaches Adam Levine, Blake Shelton, CeeLo Green and Christina Aguilera’s eight strongest team members remaining from the battle rounds. In this phase of the competition the coaches pit two of their own team members against each other, but this time they find out only minutes before performing who they are up against. The artists each select their own song to perform individually, while their direct competitor watches and waits. Their coach will choose the winner and they will proceed to the live shows.

For the first time in The Voice’s history the judges will be allowed to have one final steal. While the contestants will receive their first one on one coaching. But when it’s all over each coach will only be able to take 5 contestants onto the next round. So tonight is the night to impress. From training to the stage.

Christina’s team is up first. She paired up Amber vs. Josh. Both are strong singers yet she needs to take the best of the lot. Amber has a strong song for her round. Her problem so far appears to be pitchiness. That’s easily fixed as long as Amber concentrates. Her competitor has his issues to work through. He gets too much into his own head. When that happens he loses his strong presence. He needs to get lost in the crowd.

Amber gives a strong performance. She even added some sass to the stage. Josh performed “Living for the City”. Not surprisingly he has less hip action but he does his best to rock the two step and dancing in one spot move. Overall they were both great, the other judges thought so as well, and Christina had a tough choice. She went with Josh leaving Amber up to a steal. However both Ceelo and Blake wanted to steal her. She complimented both but went with Ceelo.

Ceelo’s team is up next. It will be Kat vs. Monika. Kat is singing “You Oughta Know”. Ceelo warned her she had to find the right note. The song in itself is a bit wordy. Monkia sings “Hit the Road Jack”. She tends to come out of tune whenever she reaches the high note. During practice Ceelo jokes with her that maybe she should see the song directly to Blake. He did after all drop her during earlier rounds. Whatever Monika did looked to be more calculated to Adam. While Blake preferred Monika over Kat. In the end Ceelo chose Kat.

Team Blake is up. It’s Holly vs. Nic. Holly is singing “Creep”. She’s struggling through the song. She can’t keep her consistency. Luckily she shares that problem with Nic. He’s singing “Genie in the bottle”. He can reach the high notes but suffers in the lower range. Their performances both had faults. Neither of them performed flawlessly. Another tough decision but Blake chose Nic over Holly.

The last team of the round is Adam’s. He has Ashley vs. Tessane. Ashley has the tnedecncy to embellish sometimes where she shouldn’t (particularly in her song choice: Hey Soule Sister) and then there’s Tessane. She chose “What Doesn’t Kill You Make Stronger”. During practice Tessane gave her worst performance. Those wore Adam’s words. Although onstage Ashley’s voce accidentally cracked when she just got started. It understandable when Adam chose Tessane. When she got to the stage, she made it work.

Round 2

Blake’s girls are up to bat. It’s Brianna vs. Shelbie Z. Blake is putting more pressure on Shelbie in this round. He feels a country should know a Carrie Underwood like the back of her hand. But Briana isn’t getting off lightly. She can’t seem to pick the right time to breathe during her song. She sand “Don’t Speak” and it was breathy. Shelbie on the other hand completely out sang her.
Adam’s Grey(singer not hair strands) is going up against James. This is his second season on the show and he really wants to win. He managed to take Adam’s advice and pull off his song. Grey got a warning about her pitch. Control is the name of the game. Despite the compelling performance Adam chose Grey over James.

Next is Destinee vs Olivia. Otherwise known as Christina’s team. Both women are powerful but Destinee has a more emotional attachment to her song choice than Olivia. Olivia has a probably connecting to the story and Christina had to remind her earlier.
Worst time to do that what with Destinee’s singing about loss when she recently lost two women in her family. It was difficult. They both did great when Christina went with Olivia. She always liked how Destinee went with her heart but she needed more than tonight.

In the last knockout of the night it’s Ceelo’s Cole and Johnny. Cole wanted to try something new. He wanted to try a slower and somewhat sadder tune. His song chance had the other judges went to snatch him if necessary. Not that Johnny was in anyway bad onstage. Ceelo went with Johnny leaving Cole open. His performance was so good that both Adam and Blake wanted him. To the end the night C ole went with Blake.

Blake is so caught up in his happiness that he goes on to say he will be riding into the sunset with Cole.

THE END!
