The Voice RECAP 10/29/13: Season 5 “The Knockouts, Part 2”

THE VOICE is one of our favorite singing reality competitions because the judges – definitely have a good time and are even quite funny. Tonight, The Voice season 5 will be returning for “The Knockouts, Part 2”  on tonight’s show forced to cut their original teams to just four artists plus one steal each, the coaches stage their final elimination performances. On last night’s show the crucible that was the battle rounds was over, but for the remaining 32 artists, the ordeal was really just beginning. As last night’s knockouts began, we learned that only five performers from each coach’s team would advance. And this year there’s was a twist: the coaches were each allowed one more steal.

On tonight’s show the “knockout rounds” continue with coaches Adam Levine, Blake Shelton, CeeLo Green and Christina Aguilera’s eight strongest team members remaining from the battle rounds. In this phase of the competition the coaches pit two of their own team members against each other, but this time they find out only minutes before performing who they are up against. The artists each select their own song to perform individually, while their direct competitor watches and waits. Their coach will choose the winner and they will proceed to the live shows. Carson Daly (“Last Call with Carson Daly”) hosts.

Tonight’s  The Voice “The Knockouts, Part 2”  is going to be an exciting one, which you won’t want to miss. In Part Two of tonight’s episode the remaining contestants are fighting for their chances to enter the Live shows. Not only do they have to impress their own judges but getting the attention of other judges might save them in a steal.

First up for the night is Adam’s team. His steal Lina vs. Preston. She’s attempting to do a soulful song in the round but Adam is concerned she’s playing around with the song instead of singing it. Through some practice he got her to arrange her high notes and fit Etta James. While he has Preston putting more emotion in his Bob Marley choice. Preston is still learning how to be a solo artist so he just needs the encouragement to take center stage.

Someone forgot what she learned in practice. Lina kept adding showmanship to her performance that song was barely sung. Preston in his corner took Adam’s advice more to heart. Even Blake and Ceelo noticed that she didn’t keep her voice in control. The notes she did take were the moments that impressed Christina. The obvious first team winner is Preston.

The second team of the night is Blake’s. He has E.G going up against Ray. He loves E.G. but she has to show some soul and not be so focused on perfection. It won’t be an easy defeat though. Ray is not on his best tonight. He sounded pitchy. Even though in the end E.G. messed up a little bit as she began. It’s not her fault that sometimes her voice sounds like Tommy from Rugrats. It was just all over the place in pitches. Everyone prefers Ray’s performance. His voice didn’t break. That’s why he won his round.

In Christina’s first knock out round of the night she set up Anthony vs. Jacquie. Anthony wanted to try something more pop over his usually slower ballads. He wanted to show some range but he so frightened over disappointing Christina he may over think. Then there’s Jacquie. She has a strong voice but her stage presence needs some work. Luckily she got a diva to teach her. She did try moving but her movements were a bit shaky. She tried to the method of swinging her arms a lot. The jerky steps couldn’t distract anyone from her voice for it is that powerful. No when Anthony was pitchy tonight. She got to win her round.

Ceelo’s team is given their first try. He has Stephanie set against Tamara. His two known divas wanted to do their own take of soul. Stephanie wants to take it to her guitar while Tamara wants to use reggae. The second Bob Marley of the night. However the judges are amazed about Tamara’s take on her song. It ward hard for Ceelo. They had to play cut off music to get him to finally make a choice. He went with Tamara but Christina stole back Stephanie. A first for her because she never takes them back.

In his final round of the night Adam has his rockers going up against each other. He has James vs. Juhi. All that rock has to come from somewhere deep down. Juhi is going to get her rocker range from Ceelo. She’s still pretty raw about him dumping her. Out onstage James’s voice started out shaky and his performance was a bit too wild but Adam is willing to believe it was only a bad day. He chose James when the other judges thought he would take Juhi.

Team Blake has Austin vs. Brandon. Austin wants to dedicate tonight’s performance to his dad that killed himself when Austin was sixteen. It’s a very powerful rendition. Although his voice could be more powerful if he sang with the band. It helps take the pressure of him. Brandon went a song that he felt would impress and allow people to hear him out. Blake felt both of their performances were pitchy but he felt more certain of Austin.

Ceelo is following the same pattern he set. He’s setting up the two similar against each other in the ring. He wanted to pin the baby faces in the ring because he wanted to be able to see who the full package was. It was George vs. Caroline. While Caroline was flawless her counterpart remained flat. Goodbye George. Try the UK version. Your name alone will get you fans.

Christina wanted to end the night with her two energetic rockers. She has Matthew singing “Cosmic Love” up against Will’s “If I was Your Man”. Unbeknownst to the judges Will hasn’t admitted to them his wife was sick. He felt it was inappropriate but now that he needs to emphasize that vulnerability. They each do so great with their songs. No one triumph in any way of the other. Yet hey a choice had to be made. Christina went with Matthew and Adam was able to steal Will back.

Adam has a diverse team now but he knows that Christina is his biggest threat. In his words she’s a great coach.

THE END!
