The Venice Film Festival is a star studded festival held each year, filled with awards bait movies and star-studded luncheons & functions. This year, the panel includes Carrie Fisher [Princess Leia from Star Wars], one of the opening films was Gravity [starring George Clooney and Sandra Bullock], and we’ve also gotten our first no-show in the form of Lindsay Lohan [for the film The Canyons].
The festival’s just gotten underway, so there’s plenty more action to come. For now, the biggest news to come out of the festival is just how strong Gravity appears to be. The reviews have been almost unanimously glowing, with some reviews calling it the best film that Sandra Bullock’s ever been a part of – and Sandy’s been a part of a LOT of movies. They’re also calling praising the technical achievement that director Alfonso Cuaron managed to bring to the film, especially the unbroken 17 minute shot in the beginning. The film supposedly has many long, unbroken takes scattered throughout the film, and the process that the filmmakers used to shoot these scenes sounds very, very complicated.
In addition to Gravity, another notable news story that came out today was how Lindsay Lohan ended up being a no-show for her film The Canyons. The director gave interviews and explained that Lohan was back in the States and concentrating on maintaining her sobriety, and although he says she’s talented, he does say that she was extremely erratic to work with. Tell us something we didn’t know.
Finally, the judges – including Star Wars’ Carrie Fisher – have been having a blast with the films, and have been spotted in several VIP soirees.
Anyway, at this rate, Gravity looks like the awards frontrunner coming out Cannes, but there’s still many films left to screen. Which films are you guys excited to watch, if any?
