Apple CEO Tom Cook has come out and announced that he is gay. More and more people are starting to speak up about gay rights, and major celebrities and high-profile figures are becoming comfortable with coming out. It’s about time, right? It only took centuries of civilized (?) society for people to stop judging other people based on skin color or sexuality, although discrimination is still rampant in most parts of the world. That being said, every time a major figure comes forward and admits he’s gay, it provides inspiration and hope to all those kids out there feeling different or feeling ostracized for no other reason than their sexuality.
Apple CEO Tim Cook joins the growing list of major figures publicly coming out of the closet, even though it wasn’t news to anyone who followed Tim on social media or who knew him at Apple.
He released a statement revealing the truth to the public, writing, “For years, I’ve been open with many people about my sexual orientation. Plenty of colleagues at Apple know I’m gay, and it doesn’t seem to make a difference in the way they treat me. Of course, I’ve had the good fortune to work at a company that loves creativity and innovation and knows it can only flourish when you embrace people’s differences. Not everyone is so lucky. While I have never denied my sexuality, I haven’t publicly acknowledged it either, until now. So let me be clear: I’m proud to be gay, and I consider being gay among the greatest gifts God has given me.”
The full statement is quite beautiful and eloquently written, and it’s clear that Tim has given a lot of time and energy to this. If only the rest of the world was willing to be as open-minded, since his remarks have already unleashed a wave of typically idiotic and homophobic remarks on Twitter.
