CHICAGO FIRE returns to NBC tonight for another episode that will keep you on the edge of your seat. In “When Things Got Rough” Lt. Severide (Taylor Kinney) is reminded of his own past by a man he saves from a car accident (guest star W. Earl Brown) and feels compelled to help him.
Elsewhere, Lt. Casey (Jesse Spencer) and Chief Boden (Eamonn Walker) grapple with how to dock Jones (guest star Daisy Betts) per her father’s orders. Meanwhile, Mouch (Christian Stolte) and Dawson (Monica Raymund) have troubles with the opposite sex and an emotional call to duty creates ripples throughout Firehouse 51. Lauren German, Charlie Barnett, David Eigenberg, Yuri Sardarov and Joe Minoso also star.
On the last episode Lt. Severide (Taylor Kinney) hit the top of the list as Det. Lindsay (guest star Sophia Bush) started calling in suspects with the clearest motives to make the guy who kidnapped Katie disappear. Meanwhile, Jones (guest star Daisy Betts) was still having trouble fitting in as word of her disruptions reach the fire department’s headquarters. Elsewhere, Herrmann (David Eigenberg) celebrated his twentieth anniversary with his wife, but no one supported his idea on the gift he intends to give. Did you watch last week’s episode? The episode starts off with Mouch getting dumped by his girlfriend who lived all the way in Japan. He was trying to make the long distance relationship work, but his girlfriend started dating a game show host over there. The gang is then talking about how Jone’s father is trying to get her disqualified so all she can get is an office job. Dawson and Casey are looking at apartments together and trying to find one that they both like. The first call of the day is a burning building where a man and his three children are trapped in a second story apartment. They rush the building and go to the west wing of the apartment.
Casey finds a man’s body and when he pulls the man out, he realizes that he was laying on his three children to protect them. He and Severide each carry out the children to safety. Dawson and Shay arrive at the scene in the ambulance where they try to revive the man but he is pronounced dead at the scene. The children are then taken to the hospital where they are to be checked out. Back at the station, the firefighters are all torn up about what they witnessed. Especially Jones who has to walk away because she is so upset. Mills goes over there to protect her and tell her that every firefighter has days like this where they want to quit. It is what they do with those days that really matters.

Meanwhile, Mouch goes up to Shay because he knows that she has set up members of the team in the past. He asks her to set him up. She appears to be reluctant, but he takes it as a yes. Meanwhile Dawson is getting weird messages from a dispatcher who she met for drinks once. She feels uneasy about it but decides to do nothing about it. The second call of the day comes from a man who is trapped in the wheel of his car. His arm is stuck and the car is starting to cave in on him. Severide and Casey help to get the man out of the wheel of the car so his arm can keep circulating and so he does not get crushed.
The medics later learn that this guy has been on pain meds for the last four years and Severide feels connected to the guy because he has dealt with issues with pain meds before. Mouch then approaches Shay about avoiding him all day; she finally relents to try and hook him up with someone. Dawson and Casey then get into an argument about her trying needing to help him go to the apartment to meet the landlord, but she can’t because she is studying to retake her firefighter test that she needs to take in order to get back on the job. She is also dealing with this insanely creepy dispatcher who keeps calling her personal phone and talking to her; it makes her very uncomfortable and even Shay agrees that it is really weird. She suggests filling a complaint against him. She does file the complaint, but then the Chief Boden gets on to her for not consulting him about it first.
The firefighters all learn that they are being sued by the wife of the man who died in the fire. She blames them for taking too much time and she wants justice to be served. The men are flabbergasted, but many of them realize that the wife is just doing this to try and make sense of what happened. Severide goes to visit the man who he saved from the car and invites him to the station to check it out. The man reluctantly appears, and he talks to the men at lunch about his life and his injury.
Shay then approaches Mouch and gives him a website called golden daters. It is for really old people. He is offended because he is the same age as some of the other guys and so basically she is calling him ugly in a really passive aggressive way. Shay feels really bad because she did not mean to be mean. The ladies Shay and Dawson then get a call to go help someone who was injured by a horse. They get there to help the man, when they realize that he is faking another problem that he has so he can get some money from whoever owns the horse. So the politely patch him up and go on their way. Later that day Dawson is approached by the dispatcher who has been aggressively calling her. He says that he is sorry, he just reminded her of a friend he once had. And he said that he called her because he felt that when he helped Dawson he was somehow helping her as well. When he revealed that he got fired she felt awful because she did not know the reason why he was calling.
The next day, the firefighters are in their suits to go to the deposition. They have to sit there and tell the story of what happened that day in front of the wife’s face. They painstakingly tell the story, and she has to sit there and endure the gory details of how they saved her three kids. After this is over, they learn that she decided to drop the suit. Dawson asks Jones to see if her dad can get the dispatcher guy his job back. She also tells Jones that her father is planning on disqualifying her and that is why he is being so nice to her. She runs out of the bar and Mills runs after her to console her. She kisses him and tries to take him home with her, but he refuses and she runs away. And that is how the episode ends.
THE END!!
