Former American Idol finalist Clay Aiken is reportedly getting ready to run for Congress, according to reports. This wouldn’t be the first time a popular figure in entertainment made a run for political office and won, if the success of Ronald Reagan and Arnold Schwarzenegger say anything. But could Clay conceivably win?
According to the Washington Blade, Clay is ‘actively considering‘ the opportunity to run a campaign to rep North Carolina in the U.S. House of Representatives. Right now, Republican Renee Ellmers represents NC’s second district, which Clay is supposedly targeting.
The report claims that Clay has already met with potential campaign managers, and has also met with the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee.
Clay first rose to fame almost ten years ago by placing as a finalist on American Idol, and since then has gone on to have a semi-successful career in music, acting, and writing. He’s also been very vocal in his activism, and that has raised quite a significant public profile for him, even after his Idol win and musical success. No doubt, he’s made quite a few contacts through his various endeavors, but it really will come down to how his campaign is run and how strong the other candidates are.
The Democratic Party primary will be held in May, and Clay has until February 28th to file for office. Do you guys think Clay will actually run a campaign for office? And if he does, does he have any shot at all at winning? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below.
