Tonight’s episode of Criminal Minds opens with a woman at a gas station, she approaches an older man and asks if she can “hitch a ride.” He turns her down and hops in his car and leaves, after a moment of hesitation he turns around and drives back and asks where she is headed. She says “anywhere but here.” He offers to drop her off at the bus stop up the street. Mia, the young girl climbs in the car, and the man introduces himself as Albert. He parks his car at the motel where he and his wife are staying, and gives her ten dollars. His wife runs out to see him, and finds Mia with him. She invites Mia up to their motel room to get warm and Mia agrees.
Penelope is dishing on her love life to Morgan, he advises her to tell her boyfriend Sam “exactly what she wants.” Morgan has a candle lit dinner planned for his Valentine. JJ arrives at the office, and Morgan and Penelope are excited to see that she has come back to work.
Morgan, JJ, Hotch, Penelope, Spencer and the rest of the team sit down to discuss their newest case. Pittsburgh police has reported two strangled murdered women, they have both been found wrapped in shower curtains. Ironically, neither of the two young women have been raped.
Albert and his wife are at marriage counseling. They are trying to rekindle their marriage. The therapist tells them they need to start “expressing their feelings.” She wants them to get back to the basics of being a couple, and be more spontaneous. Albert’s wife confesses last night they did something more spontaneous, and they checked into a motel. Albert has a flashback and recollects strangling Mia.
JJ, Morgan, Spencer and the rest of the team board a plane and head to Pittsburgh. Penelope calls them and tells them she traced the shower curtains to a chain of economy motels in Pittsburgh. The team arrives at the Pittsburgh police station to begin their investigation.
Spencer and JJ head to a motel and question the clerk. The clerk tells them they don’t have cameras and they are a “no questions asked” type of establishment. One of the rooms were missing a shower curtain. He shows JJ and Spencer the room, and the toilet is clogged. Spencer plunges the toilet, and finds a used condom. The victims weren’t raped, that means the murder had sex with someone else in the room after the murder.
Morgan and Rossi head to the morgue and speak to the medical examiner, they realize that both of the victims have been well groomed before their death, and definitely did not have sex. Morgan and Rossi develop a theory that the murderer is killing girls as foreplay, and then he and his partner have sex afterwards.
Albert and his wife head back to marriage counseling. The therapist advises Albert to give his wife her favorite flowers, pink roses. Albert and his wife head home, and he surprises her with a romantic evening of roses and dancing. His wife wants to “take the lead and pick a good one tonight,” Albert agrees.
At the police station they pull files of unsolved mysteries and murders in Pittsburgh, and they discover their team has been killing people since 1994. They took a brief hiatus in 2010, and then started killing again in 2014.
Albert and his wife head to a hotel room, and his wife heads out chooses a victim. She brings a man back to the apartment. The man climbs out of the shower and after a brief struggle Albert strangles him.
JJ, Spencer, and Morgan are racking their brains trying to understand why the killers switched up and strangled a man after all of these years.
Albert and his wife head back to their counselor and talk about how “special last night was.” Their counselor thinks that they are making great progress.
Hotch calls a meeting, and briefs his team and the Pittsburgh police on their killers. They believe they are looking for a married couple, a husband and wife team. They think that the killer’s wife gets off on watching her husband kill people. They think that the husband let his wife take control, and that is why they switched it up and killed a man. Hotch is concerned that now that the wife has a taste of control, she is going to crave killing more.
Albert arrives home from work and surprises his wife with a necklace. Albert receives a phone call later that night, and tells his wife that he “got a job.” His wife is upset because they were supposed to go to the movies, and he tells her he will be back in “thirty minutes.”
Rossi and the rest of the team are combing through unsolved murders in the area. They realize that the husband never quit killing from 2010-2014, his wife did. He just crossed state boundaries to kill people so his wife didn’t realize he was killing without her. They find a survivor that was almost killed back in 2008 and bring her in for questioning.
JJ sits down with the survivor, Hannah, and questions her about the night she was attacked. The woman recollects that it was dark and she was walking from work, a man pulled her into the alley. Hannah remembers that the night she was attacked, there was a tan tow truck, and the attacker was wearing a greasy uniform. He remembers that his name tag on his shirt said Alan.
Rossi and his team track down a tow truck driver named Alan in Pittsburgh, and find Albert (AKA Alan’s) wife heading out the door to the movies. They bring her in for questioning. Alice sits down with her and she reveals that she knows that Alan had an STD, and she says her and her husband “don’t keep secrets.” Meanwhile Alan is still out on his job, he listens to his voicemails, and has a message from Judith and the FBI arresting her. Alan knows that the police have Judith.
Alice is showing Judith pictures of women that Alan raped and strangled behind her back. Judith refuses to talk though, she wants a lawyer.
Alan arrives at Dr. Benedict, his therapists’ office. He tells her that he and Judith are leaving town, and he wants to “get a few things off his chest.” Dr. Benedict invites him into his office, and then she receives a phone call from Spencer asking if Alan is there. Dr. Benedict confirms he is and then Alan rips the phone cord out of the wall. Dr. Benedict tries to run out of the office but Alan attacks her.
Spencer and Morgan arrive the therapists’ office just in time to save the therapist, they arrest Alan. Despite the fact that Alan was theoretically cheating on Judith and murdering and raping women with her, she still refuses to testify against him and “betray her marriage.”
Hotch and his time solved the crime in time to head back home in time for their Valentine’s dates.
