RECAP:

The Commodore lies in bed troubled. He hears someone calling father and turns to the side to look for the disembodied voice. Kate and Tom roll in the bed and kiss. He spoons her and says she has to go and he says it’s early. She says she’s a slave to the tides and says they need provisions and without trade, they would starve. He asks where she’s going and she says not too far – a trading post on Adderly Cay that the British don’t bother with. He says it’s risky but she says she’s done it a hundred times and goes.

The Commodore sits up and hears ‘father’ again and then a child’s screams. We see Nelly come in to Rose in pain. She brings Tom in to check on her and he asks how long she’s been in labor and Rose says too long. She says the girl had a flat stomach and bled – they didn’t even know she was pregnant. He says he can feel it but Nelly says there can’t be a baby.

He says it’s breech. She groans in pain and he says he can turn it. He says he read about it and says it was a good book. She screams and he taps Fletch on the arm to let him know he needs help. The Commodore sees the floating white spirit and her eyes are bleeding and she hisses at him. Tom stands outside watching the shore with his telescope. Kate waves goodbye as he watches. He makes a note about the Cay.

Nenna sneaks through the jungle and then digs in the sand until she finds a package. She pulls out something then uncovers the chest under that. She stashes a jewel in it and reburies it all. Nenna has a stack of bootie and Charlie accuses her of stealing. He says he saw her hiding things that were unreported to the quartermaster. He pulls a coin out of her ear and she calls him a cheap conjurer. She distracts him with sex.

Kids race around the Cay when Kate shows up. She asks about all the children and the priest says the Lord commanded him to be fruitful. She asks how trade is and he says flat. He asks why she doesn’t bring the crew aboard and she says they are embarrassing drunks. She hands over a sack of jewels in payment and he says they have coffee if she’s interested. He says she should try it before she dismisses it. He says he’ll haggle with her and she says his only pleasure outside of sex is haggling with her. She threatens to go elsewhere to trade and they haggle good naturedly.

The Commodore rocks the little baby when Tom comes in and he asks if he’s ever heard of a mother not knowing she was pregnant. He asks if the baby will prosper and Tom says he thinks so. He tells Tom it’s their first baby and says she’s beautiful and born without sin. Tom speaks of ill children and the Commodore says many believe him evil because of his depravities. He says the world is evil and says this child will be free of all that, free of king, country, God and heaven.

Tom watches with thoughtful interest. The Commodore goes back to his chair and tells Tom his headaches are worse, more frequent and the apparitions more vivid. Tom asks who he sees and he says it’s a woman, a specter he doesn’t know. He asks will he live long enough to finish what he’s begun.

The priest compliments the jewels and she asks how long it takes to make coffee. She asks Daniel what he’s done and he says they threatened his children. Redcoats storm the marina and hold her at gunpoint. It’s Captain Harwood and says they know she has items from the HMS Petrel and if she’s done nothing wrong, she has nothing to fear. She pulls a sword and slashes at the man but she’s outnumbered. The mean on the ship watch and one lets a pigeon go.

In Jamaica, a messenger tells Jagger that the jewelry he planted on the Petrel has turned up. He asks who had it and he said a young widow and he asks where she gets the things to trade. He asks if he wants her brought there and Jagger says no, they will go to her.
Kate is tied to a post. James spots the pigeon as it flies in and takes the message from its leg. He reads it and says ‘no’ repeatedly. He rolls away from his table and grabs his crutches. He hobbles through town and Tom finds him. He tells him the English have Kate. Jagger’s ship sails for the Cay at top speed.

The Commodore loads guns and tells her that Selima has no compunctions about torturing women. He says they have to evacuate because Kate will have no choice but to tell him where they are. Selima says she never goes outside and he says she has to choose for herself. Kate asks why Harwood took the posting way out here and she offers him a bribe when she finds out he’s poor.

He asks how rich she’s talking and she says as rich as you want to be. He punches her in the stomach and says she has nothing he wants and tells her to shut up. The Commodore and his men are loading up. James tells Tom that the Commodore isn’t going to rescue Kate – he says he’s not taking enough men. He says he thinks that he’s going to kill her before she talks.

The Commodore tells Charlie not to let any English get to Selima – he says he wants him to stay behind and ‘take care’ of her. James tells Tom he knows he cares about Kate and begs him to help her. Nenna tells the others to take themselves and livestock to hide out in Hunger Bay until the threat has passed. The whores argue about going. Rose says to Nenna to tell the British to go back to London.

Rose says she needs privacy to get her things and Nenna tells her not to tarry. She loves the doors and windows and reaches into a jar of water and ick to grab out a jewel – a huge one. Nenna watches and sees where she puts it. She next pulls up a floorboard and grabs out a box of gold and other items. Nenna sees it all but then rushes back before the woman sees her. Nenna lifts the giant ruby when Rose staggers under the weight of the box.

The Commodore is speeding for the Cay when one of the men comes to tell him that Tom is on board. He welcomes him aboard and asks if he knows the punishment for stowaways. He asks why he’s there and Tom says he has a moral obligation to ensure Kate comes home safe and well. The Commodore asks if he thinks that’s not his intent and Tom says he doesn’t have a plan and is improvising.

The Commodore says he doesn’t know if he’s stupid or brilliant and Tom says he will let him decide. The Commodore says he doesn’t plan on letting her die and says he will beat the English there and buy her back. He says money trumps everything, even God and says he’s touched by his gallantry and says he has the soul of a pirate but the brain of a Frenchmen and tells his men to let her be.

Nelly rocks the baby when Fletch comes in. He asks how she is and cautions her that others are worried that if the baby cries, she could lead them to her. He says he wants to take her to a place of great safety.

The Commodore and Tom smile as they race across the seas. James tells Fletch that he used to be a lord and a great man. He says he was in Scotland. Fletch and Nelly help him pack up. Fletch asks how they came to be there. They were on a ship full of strumpets sent to the new world and the Commodore boarded them. Nelly says they chose the money and the Commodore.

She asks where Fletch was born and he says he doesn’t know and never knew parents. He says he’s been at sea since seven. James says he knew his father and he was a bastard. Fletch tells him that Tom will bring Kate home and says he’s good at that sort of thing. Fletch and James row away from the shore and Fletch sees a bearded wretch, then looks away and then back and the guy is gone.

Selima asks Charlie why he’s not with the Commodore and he says that he wasn’t needed. She says that’s not ture and he says it is. She says that he loves him and he says he said that. He says that on the ship, he was happy to serve under him but now all he gets is bible stories like the prodigal son. He says one son squandered his money and the old man celebrates but the other son, the good son, is lost because he has always been true to him and obedient. He asks what the point is of bible stories between men like them.

Kate sits now tied to a chair with a black eye on Jagger’s ship. She says she knows he’s the Governor of Jamaica. He says he was the one that killed Blackbeard as the story goes. He says that he told children that after he took his head, it cursed him. Jagger says he knew that he was lying and the head he had taken was not Blakbeard’s. She asks whose head it was and he says it was a man who bore a passing resemblance but he knew in his heart it wasn’t Edward Teach.

He says he knows that Kate is Blakbeard’s shill. She says he’s mistaken. He dumps a bag of jewels out and he says he placed them on the Petrel. He asks where she got them and she says she bought them from a tattooed Irishman. He asks if they do business often and she says she sees him perhaps once a year and he asks the name of his ship. She says the Palatine and he says there is no ship of that name.

Jagger sets down his tea and begins slapping her viciously then kicks her chair over and puts his hands on her. He says she needs to understand that he knows a lie before the sound has been uttered. She begs him and says she’s innocent. He tells her to tell him where Teach is. He touches her and tells her she should tell him the truth now. She says she’s innocent of the charges and offers to swear on a cross. He says may God forgive me and kisses her forehead with a creepy open mouth.

Selima tells Charlie he should go. He says that the Commodore told him to board up the house in case of a siege. She refuses to go and he says this makes no sense. She holds a knife to her own throat. He says he can’t follow the order he’s been given. She asks what he’s talking about. He tries to drag her to the door, they struggle and she stabs him in the stomach. She’s horrified.

Redcoats drag Kate through the jungle blindfolded behind Jagger. They bring her to the beach and she sees a coffin. On the ship, they call land-ho and the Commodore checks through his scope and says they are too late. He says Jagger will get the truth from Kate and Jagger will come for them guns blazing. Jagger tells her to give him Teach and she refuses.

He punches her in the stomach and his men shove her into the coffin and nail it shut. She screams and beats against it. They heave it into the hole they’ve dug and begin shoveling dirt onto it. She screams non-stop. Jagger sits drinking and listening to Kate scream. He checks his pocketwatch when a shot is fired. Harwood calls the men to arms as Jagger says that Blackbeard has come for her.

Charlie tells Selima she’s known as the Lady of the House. He holds a rag on his wound and she says she fears being around people. He asks if the Commodore knows and she says yes and asks why. She asks if he asked him to kill her and he says only if he had to but he says he couldn’t hurt her or see her hurt. She tosses down the knife and goes to him. She takes his face in her hands and kisses him. He kisses back with great passion and pulls her skirt up and takes her there on the table.

Jagger goes to his ship and gives chase. Jagger says they are out of range and then says he sees no one on the deck. He says they’ve been tricked. He sees a small boat flying Blackbeard’s flag and tells them to go faster. He says he can’t let him escape. They struggle to bring the ship around.

The redcoats guard Kate’s grave when a man approaches. It’s the Commodore with Tom. They shoot several of the men and Ton fights another with a sword so does Blackbeard. Harwood fights Tom and he takes him down. All the men are dispatched. Charlie cries out in pleasure and Selima pushes him away for some reason. She shudders. We see brutal scars all over his body as he backs away.

Kate hears noise and sees light. Tom and Blackbeard dig her out and Tom takes her in his arms. The Commodore pulls her out and Tom kisses her face. The Commodore sees the English ship turning around and sees Jagger on the deck. He tells him to come on. Tom says they should go but the Commodore says to wait. He watches as the ship full of explosives goes off and Jagger watches stunned.

Kate comes to see the Commodore on deck and she says she wants to thank him. He says that Tom strategized. She says she would not have told and he says Jagger would have gotten it out of her despite her. She says she’s sorry and he says she has nothing to be sorry for. She goes to Tom and takes his hand. They share a little smile.

Jagger finds the dead soldiers on the beach and Kate gone. He’s not happy. Back at the island, Tom helps Kate out of the boat and everyone cheers. James drgas himself along to see them disembark. Kate runs to him and he takes her in his arms They hug tightly. James looks at Tom with gratitude. Tom walks away alone.

The Commodore comes in to find Selima waiting. He touches her on the shoulder and she’s happy he’s back.
