Unfortunately, Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart’s Twilight dating relationship has provided Internet trolls with the impetus to attack FKA Twigs for being RPatz’s girlfriend. Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart, purely by their connection to the awful Twilight franchise and nothing else, have inspired that sort of obsession in fans, and Rob’s new girlfriend, FKA Twigs, now has to face the brunt of those fans’ anger. Is it any surprise to people that a large subsection of Twi-hards also contain racist trolls? If they are that invested in a relationship that they have no personal connection with, it’s not shocking that a large part of them will also go bonkers crazy when that relationship breaks up.
Now, I don’t want to stereotype and lump in all the fans together – there are some that are very intelligent, compassionate, and don’t follow the Twi-hard craziness. But unfortunately, there are too many of them that enforce the cray-cray stereotype, and they were out in full force over the last two weeks. The minute that FKA Twigs and Robert Pattinson went public with their relationship – holding hands, going on dates, and being very touchy feely – several racist morons decided to attack FKA through messages online. FKA finally took to her Twitter this morning to write, “I am genuinely shocked and disgusted at the amount of racism that has been infecting my account the past week. Racism is unacceptable in the real world and it’s unacceptable online.”
It sucks, right? That someone as beloved as Rob among his fans can’t date a non-white girl without racist trolls attacking her online? To be fair, any new girlfriend of Rob’s that wasn’t Kristen Stewart was going to get hate online, that was a given. But resorting to racist remarks and insults shows that there are just too many people that still live in an extremely backwards and regressed mindset, and the Internet provides them with too many forums to air their idiotic thoughts.
