Dr. Henry Morgan isn’t like other men. He’s immortal and only a few people in the world know that. His adopted son Abe and the man currently stalking him. But what is universally known about Henry is that he’s a brilliant Medical Examiner for the NYPD.
He’s never been wrong thus far so when he says an apparent suicide was actually murder – his word should have automatically been taken as fact. However Lt. Joanna Reece has ordered her detectives not to look into it. The city is crawling with overt cases of homicide as it is and she didn’t want one murky case to drag their attention away. It’s not like the police force is brimming with resources and anyways there was eyewitnesses that claimed to know the whole story.
So the lieutenant thought she put an end to the investigation and instead what she did was make it Henry’s personal mission. Seriously, how he could he ignore the case even if he wanted to? He knew he wasn’t wrong about the cause of death and after meeting the victim’s parents – he couldn’t just walk away. Henry is not heartless after all.
Truth be told, there’s ample evidence that shows he’s never walked away especially when it was in his best interests to do so. Henry kept Abe and raised him when he knew he should have let the baby go to a normal household. With any luck, he might have grown up to be more than just Henry’s unofficial Watson. Plus there was the time Henry stayed in a relationship with a woman that he knew was doomed from the start. So he’s smart, but self-preservation is nearly a foreign concept to him.
For example, he looked into the “suicide” on the bridge and it ended up causing him to die yet again. Yeah, who knew investigating off of a busy street during rush hour would lead to an accident? Hmm… how about everybody! But ultimately he did that and died to find proof that someone else was on that bridge that night and as it turns out – he was right. There was proof the young woman, Victoria, was murdered. They were two distinctive footprints on the ledge. Meaning, unbeknownst to all the eye-witnesses that claimed differently, Vicki was fighting with someone before she fell.
The footprints managed to grab Jo’s interest. She couldn’t officially re-open a case based off of that but though there was nothing in the rule book that said she couldn’t look into Vicki’s private life on her own time. And for a sweet and innocent college student – Vicki had secrets.
She was having an affair with her professor. Her very married and distinguished professor. The two of them had begun to work very closely over a newly discovered artifact and now that the paper they both had worked so hard on was over – it seemed like she was prepared to move on. Investigation revealed that she had bought a plan ticket to Paris and the night she allegedly killed herself – she had already checked in at the airport for her flight.
Further evidence that she wasn’t planning on dying any time soon!
So they looked into the professor and he made the mistake of lying about his alibi. He told Jo and Henry that he was with his wife and the wife later confessed that she was lying for him. They were supposed to have been together, but her husband never showed up for their date at the opera.
The professor was the perfect suspect. He didn’t have an alibi, his skin cells was found under the victim’s fingernails, and the only reason he could give on not wanting to hurt Vicki was that he was the one that ended their relationship. Yet Henry still chose to believe him. The good doctor had noticed the professor suffered from a condition that means his skin was easily left marked and so he asked to see the professor without his shirt on. It would be final bit of evidence that proved whether he was their killer.
And, well, the lawyers stepped in and didn’t allow that. So Henry was going to let due process take over. The NYPD had pinned the professor as their man and they would have kept looking into him. But then all that changed when they received the call.
The professor had killed himself at the office. Or so everyone thought. Henry saw that someone had gone to a lot of trouble to make it look like the professor killed himself and after he realized that – he knew who the culprit was. Though he forgot to mention it to the cops.
Henry confronted the killer on his own. The culprit was another one of the professor’s students. The guy had wanted recognition and he thought if he got rid of the two authors – he could claim their work as his own. So when Henry caught him stealing all the research files – he pulled a knife out on the doctor.
Generally, Henry wouldn’t be worried about a little thing like dying, but there was security cameras all throughout the building and he knew if he died – his body would be caught on livestream mysteriously disappearing. Hence Henry was doing his best to talk a killer down when two detectives showed up.
The cops retrieved their ME without that much damage though later Henry found out that he got reputation down at the police headquarters for being reckless and not as smart as he thinks. The cops were laughing at him for going after a suspect without backup and then for getting so frightened he even asked one of them to shoot him in order to get him away from the killer. So he didn’t really walk away from that encounter completely unscathed.
Besides, the mystery man that’s been following him also had a few things to say about Henry’s recent activities. The man asked to be called Adam and he claims to have been around for the last 2,000 years. Adam doesn’t fully comprehend why Henry seems to be taking a personal interest in anything anymore. He thinks Henry should forget about caring for others and figures Henry will eventually get there on his own once he gets older.
So a jaded immortal calling himself Adam after the legendary first man is behind the creepy notes and phone calls. This can’t end well!
THE END!
