I’m thinking that ABC is likely the smartest network when it comes to their daytime programming. I mean after watching two of their long running shows bite the dust they know better than to announce that General Hospital will be around for years to come. The Young and the Restless was announced by CBS to be renewed through 2016 as a response to the Michael Muhney firing controversy and fan backlash. Saying a show has been renewed through 2016 is kind of ridiculous because there are so many variables involved. It doesn’t matter what the contract says, if the numbers drop and advertising falls off any show is on the chopping block.
We can confirm that ABC has invested in General Hospital for at least another season though. The numbers have been on the rise since Jill Farren Phelps left as executive producer and the fans seem to be very happy with the improved story telling. It’s also not a coincidence that we are hearing about GH sticking around for a bit, now, this week.
ABC is well-aware of the backlash over at The Young and the Restless for the firing of Michael Muhney. They also are smart enough to see that a huge number of diehard Y&R fans are getting ready to tune out and believe me, they want you to give GH a chance. When Phelps left GH in shambles she jumped over to Y&R and within a few months Steve Burton jumped ship to follow her leaving GH’s cast and fans in a tizzy. Believe me when I tell you, this is a tough business and watching Y&R’s decades long fans decide to give GH a chance would be a serious victory for the powers that be.
GH is reminding viewers that they are a flip of the dial away for anyone in need of a new show. Will you give them a chance? Tell us your thoughts in the comments below!
