Tonight on FOX Gracepoint created by Chris Chibnall and starring David Tennant premieres with an all new Thursday October 2, season 1 premiere episode called, “Episode 1.” On tonight’s episode in the Season Premiere of this murder-mystery series, a boy is found dead on the beach of an oceanside town, where a detective who has been overlooked for the police-chief position finds herself teamed on the case with her testy new boss.
For those of you who are not familiar with the show, Gracepoint is an upcoming 10-episode American crime drama television series created and written by Chris Chibnall and directed by James Strong.[1] It is a remake of Chibnall’s UK drama series Broadchurch.
On tonight’s episode a young boy, DANNY SOLANO (guest star Nikolas Filipovic), is found dead on an idyllic beach in the small seaside town of Gracepoint, spurring a major investigation lead by Detective EMMETT CARVER (David Tennant, “Broadchurch,” “Dr. Who”), who has just arrived in Gracepoint to fill a high position in the town’s police force. That job previously had been promised to Detective ELLIE MILLER (Emmy Award winner Anna Gunn, “Breaking Bad”), who, in light of the tragedy, must put any resentment aside and work the case with her prickly new boss. Danny’s parents MARK and BETH SOLANO (Virginia Kull, “Boardwalk Empire”), and his older sister, CHLOE (newcomer Madalyn Horcher) are devastated by the news, which carves a powerfully dark wake through the town as friends become suspects.

It’s late at night. A young boy stands on the cliff edge looking down on the ocean. His fingertips drip with blood. He’s crying. A woman wakes and stares at her watch annoyed that she has overslept. She asks her husband why he didn’t wake her. He says he did and she told him to go to hell. Chloe says she has a fever and Beth checks her head then says no way, she’s going to school.
Beth asks where Danny is and Mark says he must be at the wildlife club. Mark hands his advertising check to the newspaper owner and greets Owen, a reporter. He says hi to Ellie and her family as they walk by. He asks Tom to tell his son he has his lunch if he sees him. He runs into the Reverend then the hotel owner Gemma. Vince, his assistant, picks him up in the work van. They are plumbers.
Vince asks him for a raise and Mark tells him to just drive. Ellie shows up to work and her boss tells her she didn’t get the promotion. He says he hired someone else. She asks who it is and says he told her that a woman needed to get the promotion. He says his name is Emmett Carver and he started last week.
Emmett is out investigating a complaint about a vandalized fence. Then he gets a call about something at the beach. Ellie is in the bathroom sitting on the toilet talking about losing the promotion when she’s told there’s a call for a crime. She hangs up on her call.
Owen is at the school shooting photos of field day. Beth shows up and the teacher says Danny isn’t there. Beth starts making calls. She calls Mark as she’s starting to panic. Tom says he hasn’t seen Danny either but says he had a Wildlife shift. Traffic is backed up and Beth has to get out of her car to look around. Another driver tells her the cops are at the beach because they found a body. She goes running in panic.
Emmett is at the beach and heads down to see a beat cop near a body. He says – don’t do this to me. He gets closer and looks down. It’s a young boy. Ellie shows up and comes over panicking. He tries to stop her until she explains that she’s a cop. She says she knows him and it’s her son’s best friend. He tells her to shut it down and she says he took her job. He asks about the kid and she rattles off facts. He asks if it’s a suicide spot and she says no. Beth is still running for the beach. She hops over the yellow tape and keeps running toward the tarp covered body.
Ellie tells her she can’t be there. The cops hold her back and Beth screams at them to get off of her. They haul her away as Ellie watches in horror. Beth saw the sneakers sticking out and knows it’s her son Danny. At the Gracepoint Journal, Owen tells Maggie he survived field day and she says he hopes he got the kids names spelled right. He says Jamie called from the Crab Shack and says the beach is shut down. She sends him to check it out.
At the top of the cliff, the crime scene guy tells them that Danny didn’t jump or fall from there and says they may have wanted it to look that way. Owen approaches them and asks about the beach. Emmett tells him to go away and Ellie says he’ll get a statement when it’s appropriate. Susan, a local oddball, watches them with interest.
Emmett and Ellie get to the Solanos and she says she wants to tell them but he won’t let her and says she has to treat the notification as part of the investigation. She glares and he tells her not to look at him like that. Mark paces and Beth cries then they see the cops coming up the walk. They knock and Mark gets the door. Emmett asks them to sit. They do and Emmett says a boy’s body was found. He says they believe that it’s Danny and she asks Ellie if it is. Chloe is there and bursts into years. Beth’s mom too.
They all hold each other and sob. Mark holds his wife and daughter. Ellie brings them tea and Beth asks if it was an accident but Emmett says it’s not clear. Mark says his son didn’t kill himself. Beth says she checked on him at 9 and he was reading. She says he goes out sometimes in the morning to work recording wildlife with Jack but says he told her Danny didn’t show up this morning.
Emmett asks if there was any forced entry and Mark says he wants to see the body – say she’s not sure it’s his son. Emmett heads upstairs and slips on some booties before going into Danny’s room. He slides on gloves and starts looking around. He looks at his books and sees an unfinished crossword puzzle and a photo of him and another boy on his desk. He looks at the door frame where his height was recorded as he grew.
Ellie takes Mark to the coroner’s. He sobs and goes in and sees that it is Danny. He asks if he can touch him. He sits and tells his son he’s sorry that he wasn’t there to protect him and will never forgive himself. He stands and wipes his tears and promises his son that they will catch whoever did this. He says he loves him. He wipes his face and walks out. Ellie follows. Beth sees Emmett sitting on her son’s bed and just looks broken.
Emmett talks to the team and asks who may have had keys to the house and access. Ellie says the women were watching TV and Mark was out on emergency call til three. She says no one saw Danny after nine. He tells them nothing leaks to the press and Ellie gets sassy and tells him they know this. Emmett’s boss says he thinks he should hand this off to Ellie because of his scandal with Rosemont.
He tells him he was exonerated.
Ellie asks Emmett what the chief wanted but he won’t tell her. Then he asks to talk to her son. She tells him to call her Ellie not Miller and says she doesn’t like the last name thing. They go to see Jack at the kayak shack. He explains about his wildlife monitoring. Ellie explains that Emmett is from the city. She asks about Danny being there and he says the kids take turns helping log the wildlife and it helps them learn about the environment. He says kids miss mornings so he didn’t call to check but says Danny hasn’t missed before. Emmett asks if he’s married and he says no then asks Emmett if he is.
