NBC’s hit show HANNIBAL returns tonight with a season finale episode. In “Mizumono,” A trap is set for Hannibal in the Season 2 finale. Also: Will tries to tie up loose ends as he prepares for a departure; and a battle between Hannibal and Jack comes to the fore.
On last week’s episode in a therapy session, Will imagined how he would kill Hannibal, honestly sharing his visions, and oddly bolstering their co-dependency. Later, in a session with Mason Verger (Michael Pitt), Hannibal discussed Margot’s (Katherine Isabelle) unfortunate “accident” and other veiled threats. Jack (Laurence Fishburne) grew impatient with Will’s progress on catching Hannibal, and brang in a surprise witness from the past to help. And when Hannibal’s life was threatened, Will must decide whether to come to his aid, and give Hannibal the opportunity for revenge. Did you watch last week’s episode? If you missed it we have a full and detailed recap, right here for you.
On tonight’s episode Hannibal prepares for his imminent departure with, he believes, Will. Will prepares for a departure of another sort, tying up loose ends, not sure if he’ll survive the trap he’s set for Hannibal. Both men feel that Jack (Laurence Fishburne) deserves the truth, but what is that truth? Loyalties will be tested and forgiveness will be asked… and the inevitable battle between Hannibal and Jack is upon them. Also starring Caroline Dhavernas, Aaron Abrams, Scott Thompson, Lara Jane Chorostecki, Vladamir Jon Cubrt, and Kacey Rohl.

Hannibal writes in fancy calligraphy – it’s an invitation to Jack. He reads the invite to Will – it says he requests the pleasure of his company for dinner. Hannibal later talks to Will and says the chair he sits in holds the molecules of all their conversations. Will calls them deadly revelations and petty exchanges. Hannibal calls these the grunts and poetry of life. He asks Will what he hears. Will says melody. Hannibal says it’s the orchestrations of carbon – you and me. And Jack, Will adds. Hannibal agrees.
Hannibal says all their destinies are flying and swimming in blood and emptiness. Jack says he will be wearing a wire and will have sharp shooters on the rooves nearby. Will tells Jack that Hannibal will try to kill him in the kitchen so it’s more convenient to prep him for dinner. He tells Hannibal that Jack won’t be easy to kill – he says he’ll be armed and that he’s strong and well trained. He says – we can’t hesitate. Jack tells Will that Hannibal thinks he’s his man in the room and that Jack thinks the same.
Hannibal tells Will to come running when he hears Jack scream. They each ask Will when the moment comes, will you do what needs to be done. Will says – oh yes. (shivers) Will walks up to his house. We see snoke pouring out of the chimney. His dogs bark as he approaches. A man – it’s Garrett Hobbes – sits on his porch. He shushes the alarmed animals. He stands. Will has a hunting rifle. He opens the door. The man says “see.” Will looks out and takes aim. He is in a treehouse and takes aim at a large antlered creature.
Bella speaks to Hannibal. She’s very weak and her vision is impaired. She tells Hannibal she died and says she’s now between deaths. Hannibal says the punctuation at the end of the sentence gives meaning to every word. Bella tells him that he moved her punctuation mark and moved her meaning. She’s struggling and gasping, in terrible pain. She holds the oxygen mask to her mouth and breathes.
She says that she’s not there because she wants to be and he saw to that. Bella says she’s there because she can’t abandon Jack – not again. Hannibal says all of life is about love and death and she says – you saved me for Jack. She asks Hannibal if he will save Jack for her when she’s gone.
Freddie tells Will that she’s going to enjoy her resurrection and says everyone loves a survivor story. Will says he’s not sure that they will survive this. She says she started as a cancer writer for a tabloid and wrote about survivors. Will says they are all about hope. He asks Freddie to do something for him – he asks her to not write about Abigail. He says she can write about him or Hannibal, but to leave Abigail alone. She says – you really don’t know if you’re going to survive, do you. Will asys – let her rest in peace.
Papers are soaring to the floor from Hannibal’s library. Will stands on the bottom level flipping through a file and says – these are your notes on me. Hannibal says they are. There are books all over the floor – the place is kind of a mess. Will walks to the fireplace and tosses in a journal with notes on him including the wonky clock he drew when his brain fever was at a height.
The journals they are pulling down are for his patients and Will asks won’t the patients need them after Hannibal is gone and he says he doesn’t want the FBI scrutinizing his patient files. He says he’s packing up and moving who he is brick by brick. Hannibal says when we have gone from this life and leave Jack and the FBI behind, he’ll still have this place.
Will asks if it’s part of his memory palace and Hannibal tells him his memory palace is vast even by medievil standards. Will says all he needs is a stream. Hannibal says when you can’t overcome your surroundings, that’s all you need. Will says he just closes his eyes and wades into a stream. Hannibal says if he is ever apprehended, his memory palace will be where he will live.
Will asks if he could be happy there and Hannibal says not all the rooms there are lovely and some parts are broken. Hannibal closes his eyes in thought. We see him thinking about hair – hair on Freddie Lound’s head. He looks as if a thought has just occurred to him. Does he know Freddie isn’t really dead?
Alana sleeps in satin sheets. The sheet is pulled off of her. Then we see liquid pour in around her. She says she dreams darkness comes into her and it’s insidious – up her nose, into her ears. The dark liquid engulfs her completely. She says she feels poisoned. She’s telling this to Will who tells her they’ve all been poisoned. She says he saw what no one else could. Will says all it took was the traumatic.
Alana is crying and says – we’re still in the thick of it. Will says we’re getting through the worst of it. She asks if he’s set a trap that he’s goading Hannibal into. She asks how can you be sure he’s not goading you. Will says he can’t be sure. Another tear slips down her cheek and splashes onto the table.
We see drops of blood in water. There is a rib cage on a dinner table surrounded by vegetables. Hannibal asks Will if he knows what something is and he says it’s an insect – Hannibal says it’s the last stage of a transformation. He says it’s also an image of someone we carry with us our whole lives and Will calls it an ideal. Hannibal says he and Will each have a concept they carry of each other in their heads and Will says neither is ideal.
Hannibal asks Will if it’s ideal that Jack dies and Will says it’s necessary and what happens to Jack has been pre-ordained. Hannibal says they could disappear tonight. Feed your dogs, leave a note for Alana and never see her or Jack again. He says it’s almost polite. Will says then this would be our last supper. Hannibal says – of this life. He tells Will he served lamb and Will asks if it’s sacrificial. Hannibal says he doesn’t need a sacrifice and asks Will if he does.
Will says he needs him to know. He says if he confessed to Jack right now… Hannibal says he would forgive him. He asks Will if Jack would accept Jack’s forgiveness. Will says that Jack isn’t offering forgiveness and wants justice. He says he wants to see Hannibal for who he is and see what Will has become. Will says he wants the truth. Hannibal says – to the truth then and all its consequences. They sip their wine.
Kade stalks into Jack’s office and says it’s entrapment. He says you can’t entrap someone into committing premeditated murder. She says the only person in the investigation they can confirm committed murder is Will. Jack says that was self defense. Kade says this is outrageous conduct and they will never get a conviction. Jack tells her they are as close as they will ever get to catching this man.
Kade tells him she knows his wife is terminally ill. She says that he’s distracted. She says there will be an inquiry and then he’ll go on forced compassionate leave. He hands over his gun and badge. Kade takes his badge from his hand. He walks out of the office escorted by security. Jack looks determined as he’s marched down the hall. Later, he sits at Bella’s bedside.
Kade looks through the files and says it’s staggering. Alana asks what she’s going to do about Hannibal. Kade says they’ve blocked his passport and Alana says there is no other way to catch him but in the act. Kade shows Alana photos of Will’s mutilation of the man and says the death may have been in self-defense but that stops somewhere.
Kade says that Jack has misued the power of his office. Alana tells her they are desperate and Kade says they are breaking the law and are being brought up on charges. Alana tells her they won’t stop and Kade says she’s bringing them into custody. Alana says she won’t be able to stop him from doing what he has to do. Jack kisses Bella. It looks like she’s near death (or dead).
A phone rings at Will’s. It’s Alana. She asks if Jack is with him. He says no. Alana says the FBI has issued a warrant for his arrest for accessory to entrapment and the murder of Randall Tier. He hears the dogs barking outside and a car. She tells him that Jack will also be arrested. Will looks out the window and sees several pairs of headlights. He tells her goodbye and hangs up. He walks out the door. Will calls Hannibal and tells him – they know.
Hannibal works in his kitchen when Jack comes in. We see Jack’s reflection in a blade as Hannibal slices into a large chunk of meat. Hannibal says that he’s early and Jack says he couldn’t wait to get here. He asks Jack if he wants to serve as sous chef and Jack thanks him for his friendship. Hannibal says true friendship is to understand and be understood with absolute clarity. We now see Hannibal’s reflection in the blade.
Jack tells him – then this is the clearest moment of our friendship. He pulls a gun and Hannibal throws a knife that goes through his hand. Jack pulls it out and they brawl. Jack throws Hannibal through a glass cabinet and they swap brutal punches. Jack has him in a choke hold then Hannibal turns it around. Alana approaches the house in the rain.
Hannibal bashes Jack in the head with the door of the fridge knocking him down and pulls out a large knife. They exchange punches and Hannibal has him on the counter about to stab him. Jack turns it around and throws Hannibal down brutally. Alana calls the police and says she heard gunshots. Jack chokes Hannibal and almost has him unconsious when Hannibal stabs him with a sliver of glass.
Jack retreats to the wine room and blocks the door. Hannibal tries to beat it down. Alana comes in, gun drawn and sees Hannibal lunging at the door. Jack wraps his tie around his neck to staunch the bleeding. Alana calls out Hannibal’s name. She asks where Jack is and he says – in the pantry. He tells her he was hoping they wouldn’t have to say goodbye – nothing seen or said.
He walks toward her and she screams at him to stop. She tells him she was so blind. Hannibal says – in your defense, I worked hard to blind you. He tells her she can stay blind. He tells her she can hide from this and walk away. He says he will make no plans to call on her but says if she stays, he will kill her. He tells her to be blind, not brave. She tries to fire the gun and it just clicks.
She clicks the trigger again and again and Hannibal tells her he took her bulletes. He comes for her. She runs. He has the knife in his hand. She runs up the stairs. He drops the knife and comes after her bare handed. She locks the door and tries to load her gun. He comes to the door and she’s ready. She fires at the door and yells out – I found more bullets. She sees him pass by the door and fires into it again. She sees a shadow and turns.
It’s Abigail. She tells Alana she’s so sorry. She shoves Alana out the window. She falls down two stories in a hail of glass with a shocked expression on her face. Rain falls on Alana’s broken body as she breathes her last breaths. Will gets out of a taxi and comes up to the house. He finds her there and she’s struggling to speak. He pulls off his jacket. He calls 911 for an ambulance. She tells him that Jack is inside. She tells him to go.
Jack is also struggling for life in the pantry. He pulls out his phone. Will comes soaked wet into the house with his gun drawn. He looks around slowly. He heads for the pantry. He sees an enormous puddle of blood under the door. Abigail is there and is crying. Will is shocked to see her. He lowers his gun and says her name. She says she didn’t know what else to do so she just did what he told me. Will asks where he is.
Hannibal is standing right behind him. Will tells him that he was supposed to leave and Hannibal says – we couldn’t leave without you. Hannibal touches Will’s face and then stabs him in the gut – it looks like Mason’s little knife – but may not be. He holds Will to him and says that the teacup that he shattered didn’t come together. Abigail cries. Hannibal says that it should have been all of them together. He tells Will he wanted to surprise him. He says – and you wanted to surprise me.
Blood is gushing out of Will’s abdomen. Hannibal tells him that he let him know him, see him and says he gave him a rare gift, but he didn’t want it. He says he would deny him his life and Will says no. Hannibal says he would take his freedom and confine him to a prison cell. He asks Will if he thinks he could change him the way Hannibal changed him and Will says – I already did.
Hannibal says fate and circumstance have returned us to this moment when the teacup shatters. He tells Will he forgives him and asks Will for his forgiveness. Will says no. Hannibal tells Abigail to come to him and she takes his hand. Hannibal holds the knife to Abigail’s neck and slices her jugular. She’s in shock. Her blood sprays all over Will. He tells Will he can make it all go away. He tells him to put his head back, close his eyes and wade into the quiet of the stream.
Will and Abigail lie close to each other, bleeding out. He puts his hand on her neck and tries to stop her bleeding. Hannibal walks out into the rainy night and lifts his face to the downpour, like a baptism of sorts. He rubs his hands over his face and washes the blood away. Will cries and can’t hold Abigail’s wound anymore and has to release it. Blood gushes and gushes and the pool of blood around them grows and grows.
In the pantry, Jack gets through to Bella but he can’t speak. Hannibal steps over Alana and out into the street. He pulls on his jacket and walks away. Will looks and sees the antlered creature lying on the floor, bleeding out and then it breathes its last. Pianoforte music plays as we see sun cut through clouds to light up a beauiful sky. A plane flies over. In first class, orange juice and champagne are offered. Hannibal requests champagne and takes a class. Bedelia sits beside him in first class. He smiles at her and takes her hand. He closes his eyes and leans his head back.
Arrgh! Who’s dead? Who’s alive? What a cliffhanger!!
THE END!!
