NBC’s hit show HANNIBAL returns tonight with a new episode. In “Takiawase” Beverly works on a mural-killer case and secretly consults Will, whose suspicions rise about Hannibal. Elsewhere, a body is found in a meadow which leads to an investigation.
On the last episode Will Graham’s (Hugh Dancy) trial began and he watched as those closest to him were forced to take sides. Jack Crawford (Laurence Fishburne, already in hot water from Alana Bloom’s (Caroline Dhavernas) scathing report about his conduct with Will, was pulled in conflicting directions. He acknowledged that he may be partially to blame for pushing his star pupil over the edge. To add confusion to an already suspenseful trial, a court bailiff was killed in a Copycat-like manner and those closest to Will started to wonder if they were wrong about him. The outcome of the entire trial hangs in the balance as one last key victim was served up. Did you watch last week’s episode? We did and we recapped it right for you.
On tonight’s episode Our team is called in when a body is found in a meadow, the cranial cavity converted into a beehive. Meanwhile, Beverly Katz (Hattienne Park) continues to work on the mural killer case, secretly consulting with Will Graham (Hugh Dancy) to decipher the killer’s human tapestry. Will insists that the killer was put in the mural by Hannibal Lecter (Mads Mikkelsen), and urges her to prove that Hannibal is the real Chesapeake Ripper and Copycat Killer. Also starring Aaron Abrams, Scott Thompson, Amanda Plummer and Raúl Esparza.

how to tie a fly. He shows Abigail how to make a fly. He tells her the knot is a blood knot. He tells her he’s going to teach her how to fish even though her dad taught her to hunt. She says they’re the same thing and she says one you stalk and one you lure. She asks what he’s trying to catch and he tells her the one who caught her. She tells him that’s the one that got away. He says once they get away they’re harder to catch again. She tells him everyone thinks he’s lying and he says that’s why he has to catch him. He tells her to name the bait after someone she cherished. Abigail asks what he named it and he tells her her name. She casts the line.
Will is back in his cell. Beverly brings him photos of the mural and says he was right and the killer was in the center of the mural. His name was James Gray. He asks who stitched him into the mural and she says maybe a partner and he says no he worked alone but the second killer knew Gray well enough to convince him to join in the mural. She asks who is capable of that and he tells her Hannibal and that she can prove it. He tells her there will be a hidden clever detail and she agrees to look for the clue but not for Hannibal. He says as long as she’s looking.
In a field, a bee flies along and enters the hive that has formed on a corpse! Bees swarm out of the victim’s mouth.
At the hospital, Will tells Chilton that he’ll give him the same deal he gave Beverly. He tells him he knows he’s been recording him. He also says he knows he’s a topic of conversation among psychiatric circles. Chilton says he’s shared on the stand that he thinks he’s faking. Will says that makes him another type of psycho them. Will says he’s either a psychopath, delusional or right about Hannibal Lecter and asks Chilton isn’t he curious.
Chilton asks to test him and Will consents. Chilton asks about Hannibal and Will says he will be his only shrink as long as he pledges to not share one more word about him to Hannibal. He tells Chilton to tell Hannibal that he’s decided Will is no longer his business and that he is now under Chilton’s exclusive care.
At his place, Bella chats with Hannibal and tells him that Lazarus had it good since he had a friend with power over death and jokes that she should have embraced Facebook when she had a chance. She says she shouldn’t have let Jack talk her into chemo and Hannibal says he wants her to live longer but Bella says there is no quality of life. She’s sleeping 18 hours a day or not at all and vomiting up her stomach lining. She says she’s in pain and Hannibal tells her Jack loves her and will feel her silence once she’s gone.
She tells him that it’s over and that she wants it to be done while she still has some dignity. He asks if she’s considering taking her life and she agrees it seems a valid solution. He asks how it makes her feel and she says “alive” and asks how it makes him feel. He says the idea of death is comforting to him and that it’s freeing to appreciate the now when your life could end at any moment. He tells her that when Socrates killed himself he saw death as a cure and not a defeat.
Jack comes out to the woods where the beehive corpse is and he asks Jimmy why they didn’t let them exterminate the bees before they worked the scene. Jimmy gives some gross bee facts and tells him the body has been out there for a couple of weeks and that the body was repurposed to specifically make it a human apiary. The eyes and part of the brain were removed to make room for the hive.
Beverly brings in Hannibal to help her on an autopsy since Zeller is out in the field with Jimmy. She asks wasn’t he a surgeon before and he says he was and a doctor before. She tells him she needs help figuring out who killed Gray. He asks if Will has been helping her and she says he is since she agreed to keep looking at the other murders. She asks Hannibal if he still thinks Will is innocent and he says there is a chance and she adds that she’s glad that he’s no longer accusing Hannibal.
She tells him Will thinks the killer may have hidden something in Gray. He grabs a magnifying glass and examines the stitching. He tells her you need to go deep beneath the skin to understand this killer’s pathology. Chilton asks Will for consent to narcotics to loosen him up to be sure he’s getting honest answers. Will asks what drug he would use if he wanted someone to have memory loss. Chilton says you can interrupt protein synthesis and you must have skills and are open to unorthodoxy.
Will asks if Hannibal is capable and he says he could be. Will signs the form (how can a mental patient give knowing consent). He gets the drug and mental chaos ensues. He stares up at the blinking fluorescents and then breaks out in a sweat. He sees Hannibal asking him to draw a clock and injecting him with a drug. Chilton is asking questions and Will sees the odd clocks he was drawing that Hannibal ignored. He sees Hannibal’s face melting like the clocks he drew.
Chilton speaks his name and drags him out of it. Will tells him Hannibal was inducing seizures and blackouts by drugging him. He says it was planned and strategic. Chilton says you’d need certain circumstances and Will asks if encephalitis would qualify. Chilton is stunned and says that would qualify as radically unorthodox therapy and Will agrees that it would.

Hannibal comes to the hospital and Chilton greets him and says he’s embarrassed that he didn’t get his message about canceling his appointment with Will. Chilton tells him Will is in a delicate point in his therapy and Hannibal asks didn’t he think Will was an intelligent psychopath. Chilton says he did a narco-analytic interview and his opinion is now evolving.
He says new information has come to light and says that Will may have a continuum of illnesses and some are naturally occurring and some are induced. He asks who induced them and Chilton asks if he ever used light therapy on him. Hannibal says he seems to think he did something strategic to Will. Chilton says he thinks he may have been driving Will to violence. Chilton reminds him that he’s not the only shrink that’s been accused of driving someone to kill and that they have to stick together. OMG!
Bella has some marijuana to help with her cancer and tries it out. She tells him that the man at the dispensary recommended Purple Kush. Jack asks for a hit and she hands it over but asks if he still gets drug tested. He takes a puff and says he’s supporting her. She tells him she completed her advanced directive and added a DNR. He tells her that she’s harshing his buzz.
He tells her about a new treatment he just read about but she tells him that she watched her mother go through what she’s going through now. She says she remembers her mother in agony toward the end and that she couldn’t help her. Jack tells her there is nothing she could do and she says he will be in that position and she doesn’t want to put him through that. He says those won’t be the memories he hangs on to. He reminds her of a trip to Italy and the smell of her cooking and gardening. She laughs. Bella tells him that’s good.
The bee victim Duncan has been missing for six months and the guy had a high white blood cell count when he died – likely an infection killed him. Jimmy says it may have been a religious killer and Zeller shows him punctures that indicate he was lobotomized.
We see an old man with arthritis who’s in pain and the woman says bee venom treatment can be very beneficial. She prepares the man for acupuncture treatment. She puts small pins in him and he tells her he can’t feel anything and she says that’s good. She says ten he won’t feel this and pulls out a large spike that she pushes into his eye as he whimpers. She hammers it in and twists it while she smiles.
A girl jogs in the park and sees a man leaning over. She tells him he shouldn’t stare at the sun because it will hurt his eyes. She screams when he turns and she sees an empty sockets and his blank expression. Zeller looks into the man’s empty eye sockets and sys he can see multiple holes in him too. He’s got lesions in his frontal lobe and is covered in bee stings. He says he likely isn’t feeling anything because of the bee toxins.
Beverly comes in and they tell her they see a pattern. They notice the bee stings are hiding acupuncture marks. She asks what he said and he repeats it. She goes back to Gray’s body with that idea and examines the stitching more closely. She sees that the stitches are hiding stitches and unlaces him. She recalls Hannibal’s comment to go deeper beneath the skin. She finds the guy’s kidney is gone.
Will is freaking out and remembering things from his past encounters with Hannibal and when he had the gun in Hannibal’s house. He sees Hannibal staring into his eyes and then taking the gun and telling Dr. Gideon that will is having a seizure. Gideon tells Hannibal it doesn’t seem to bother him. Will watches the scene from an outside perspective. He asks Gideon if he’s the man who claimed to be the Chesapeake River and Gideon asks if Hannibal is the ripper and he tells Gideon it’s a terrible thing to have your identity taken. Will is remembering so much!! But he’s still stuck in that stinking cell.
Beverly shows Will that the killer took not only his leg but his kidney and that the stitches were hiding other stitches. He reminds her of the Chesapeake Ripper case and she asks if now he’s saying that’s who Hannibal is and he clarifies that’s who he also is. He asks if the kidneys were surgically removed and she tells him yes and then he reminds her that Hannibal was a surgeon.
She tells him she asked Hannibal to help with the autopsy and Will is horrified tells her that Hannibal would sniff out an agenda. She tells him that Hannibal pointed her to the evidence. He tells her that he’s baiting a hook and toying with her. He tells her to bring it to Jack and she says she doesn’t have enough. He tells her to stay away from Hannibal. She asks what he’s doing with his trophies if he is the Ripper. He thinks abot the kills and then says he’s eating them.
The bee lady rubs honey on a hive and spins it in a device. She pours the extracted honey into a jar as she gets a knock at the door. Jack, Jimmy and Zeller are at the door to ask about two of her former patients. They ask when she last saw Duncan and Lloyd. She says she can check her calendar and asks if they’ve found them. They tell her one is dead and one may as well be. They ask what she was treating Duncan for and she says he had a number of immune issues and that life wasn’t going his way. She says he couldn’t imagine a dignified end of life so dying in a meadow with a head full of bees is nicer. She asks if they tried the honey and she says she couldn’t either because it seemed too morbid.
They ask if she left him in the field to die and she says she brought him there to die but didn’t kill him. She says she quieted his mind so he could die in peace. They ask about Lloyd and she says he had crippling arthritis and after he was quieted she saw him walk pain-free for the first time in his life. She says she can make it so pain doesn’t matter and that the she protected these people from hopelessness and that’s beautiful.
Bella comes to see Hannibal and she tells him that she can hardly walk across the floor. He tells her it’s hard being weak. She says Jack had to carry her after chemo and it was the second time he carried her across the threshold. She tells him she brought him something. It’s a coin. She says it’s for helping her understand that death is not a defeat but a cure. He sits and asks her what she’s taken. She says she took all of her morphine – every bit of it.
She says she didn’t want to die at home and Jack find her and have to make that call and be in the room with her body. She’s struggling to breathe. She’s getting groggy. She tips her head down and he tells her she denied him his good-bye and she says she denied him a painful good-bye and allowed herself a peaceful one. She tells him to tell Jack that she loves him very much and he says yes. She’s fading and says good-bye Dr Lecter. Her vision is fading to black and tears fall from her eyes. Her hands and feet go limp. He says – good-bye Bella.
Hannibal sits back and crosses his legs and stares at her dead body. He looks at the coin she brought him and then flips it. It lands in his hand and he stands. He opens a cabinet and pulls out a syringe and medicine and fills the needle. He sticks it in Bella’s neck and she revives. He looks at her and holds her head. She says “no.”
Beverly goes to Jack’s office but can’t find him. He says Jack had to go to the hospital about his wife – he says Hannibal called him about her and she asks if Hannibal is also at the hospital. Bella wakes in her hospital room to Jack kissing her hand. He greets her and tells her he’s there for her. Hannibal sits back in the shadows of the room but then rises. She asks what he’s doing there and Hannibal says that he couldn’t honor what she asked. He sits the coin beside her pillow and tells her he’s sorry. She slaps him hard across the face and then wheezes from the effort. She tells him to get out. Hannibal goes.
At Hannibal’s place, Beverly searches in his refrigerator and then picks a lock into a room where she finds a meat cutter and a freezer with carefully packed cuts of meat. She says “gotcha” and gabs a kidney but then sees fluid on the floor. She looks down at it and then sees it’s leaking into an underfloor. She goes down to investigate and finds a room of horrors. Unfortunately, Hannibal is also there. She takes a shot at him and he runs. We hear several more shots.
