Nearly 18 years ago, Todd Allen and his wife sold their home and packed up their kids to go live on the road. But this isn’t another episode of Extreme Parenting. This is the premiere of Home Sweet Bus. And tonight’s episode opens up to a story of a pastor who woke up one day and felt an emptiness. He wanted to do more than preach the word of god. He wanted to bring life to those words in the only way he could think of – he wanted to start a band and sing for the Lord. And luckily for him, his wife Michelle was of the same opinion. So she agreed to take their family of six at the time traveling. However as time went on – their family grew. And now there are thirteen members in their family.
Michelle and Todd went on to have more kids. And then their eldest got married and had twin boys of his own. So it can get awfully crowded on the bus. Thankfully though the bus (both their home and tour bus) was continuously updated to keep up with the growing numbers.
But there still the occasional hassle. As you would expect in any family, kids sometimes want their own space. Even those who’ve never another way of life. And as a young mother of twin boys, their daughter-in-law often wishes she has more room to navigate rocking a child back to sleep.
Yet they make it through. Despite everything, they appear to live a charmed life and after working their way up in their business – the Allen family has become something of a hot commodity. Faith based music apparently has a large audience and so the Allens can find themselves singing almost every night of the year.
Then when they’re off the stage, it’s back to normal life. They kids have rules and chores. And while the kids are occupied doing the latter – the parents do everyone’s laundry. Laundry time is one of the few chances that Todd and Michelle have to speak privately. So they use it to their best advantage.
Recently, they’ve been wondering about dating rules. Todd believes his sons are going to be fine but just the thought of his daughters dating and getting married one day has him scared. So he doesn’t want to talk about courting rules. The fact his daughters have promised to wait until marriage is enough for him.
His eldest, Caleb, also adhere to that rule. Caleb didn’t even kiss his wife until their wedding day. And funnily enough he had missed at the time. Later he was able to get a handle on it. As can clearly be seen with his two children. So since then Todd hasn’t really seen any drawbacks in the way his kids are allowed to date. Though they don’t call it dating. They say “courting”.
As for the future-in-laws awaiting him in the future, Todd doesn’t really see the tour bus life as that big of adjustment for anyone possibly marrying in. Steffanie, Caleb’s wife, managed to adapt well into the family. Then again she also knew them for years before she and Caleb became romantically involved. But the last part doesn’t seem to matter.
What does is that the family is happy even if it’s in their own way!
The kids were all homeschooled. Being on the road meant the kids couldn’t attend traditional school. Though that hasn’t hampered any of the kids completing their schooling. The four eldest have already graduated. So it’s been easier on Michelle with only four kids left to teach.
And as for performing, the family loves singing together. They had a performance that very night and regardless of missing dinner – cooking on a bus isn’t always the greatest thing – they went up onstage and enjoyed themselves. Sometimes the audience isn’t as enthused but the Allen family’s secret weapon, namely their youngest who is simply the cutest, can most of the time get everyone to love him by singing a song.
So, at the end of the day, that’s the Allen family!
THE END!
