Americans don’t give a damn about royal protocol, even for Kate Middleton, and nobody proved that better than LeBron James yesterday. When meeting Kate Middleton and Prince William during the Brooklyn Nets game at the Barclays Center in NYC, LeBron put his arm around Kate Middleton during the media photo. To be fair, LeBron James probably didn’t know [or didn’t remember] that royal etiquette dictates that you should not touch nor embrace members of the British royal monarchy in public.
You’d think that he would have been briefed on that, but honestly, people in the US generally don’t care for monarchy. There’s a reason the country fought for its independence and won, right? Any forms of monarchy or royalty were immediately done away with, and Kate Middleton and Prince William – while treated like A-list celebrities – don’t get the ‘royal’ treatment.
Of course, LeBron James totally geeked out over meeting the royal couple, putting several photos on Instagram and captioning them with, “This very moment will be forever remembered and put up in my house. It’s all good and all smiles on this side. #Royalty #StriveForGreatness #RWTW #LRMR #Klutch.”
Awww, isn’t that sweet? He’s totally fangirling the royal couple, and to be fair to Kate, she totally didn’t seem to care when LeBron put his arms around her – except in the photo above she looks like she wants to scream! In fact, she and Prince William seemed to be in excellent spirits during the game, and it makes sense – Kate’s always expressed her admiration of New York City, and now she’s finally getting to experience it first-hand.
What do you guys think about LeBron James unintentionally flouting royal etiquette by putting his arm around Kate Middleton’s shoulder? Does it matter, or is the media making a big deal for no reason? I mean seriously it’s not exactly an international incident. Let us know your thoughts in the comments below.
