You can’t help but feel sorry for Ian Somerhalder as he’s constantly drifting in and out of Nina Dobrev‘s friend zone. They were dating for so long that it’s still odd for fans to comprehend that they’re not together anymore, but what’s even odder is their rumored friends with benefits relationship. Can you be ‘friends’ when you used to date? Plus, Ian now has to watch Nina date other guys, and I can’t imagine that’s easy for him.
Ian has yet to go public with any rebound or relationship after the breakup with Nina, partly because he still thinks he has a chance at getting back together with her. However, Nina’s already rebounded with Derek Hough and Liam Hemsworth [that we know of], and she’s now being linked to Dominic Howard, of the band Muse.
Sources tell us that Ian is jealous of Nina’s new boyfriend, but there’s unfortunately not much he can do about. It’s her life and her choice, and she’s made it very clear to Ian that she’s not interested in settling down. Considering that Ian’s coming up on the latter half of his 30s, I doubt he’ll hold out for Nina much longer. Even if they do get back together, I doubt she’ll agree to get married, settle down, and have children – especially with her entire career ahead of her.
For now, Ian will just have to comfort himself with the fact that Nina and Dominic are probably not going to last. But when the inevitable breakup comes, will she end up moving to someone else or return to him? Only time will tell, but if Ian gets shafted again, he probably should move on, once and for all. I doubt his self-esteem could take another hit like that.
