Could Philip Seymour Hoffman‘s death have been prevented? In all cases of drug addiction, particularly when it comes to the more serious drugs such as heroin and cocaine, there’s always a chance the addict can be saved. But it requires close friends and family to be able to discern that their beloved has relapsed, something that doesn’t always happen. In the case of Philip Seymour Hoffman, it definitely seems like people around him were aware that he was slipping, but not his family nor his close friends.

But what if that’s not true either? According to Radar Online, Hoffman’s good friend Justin Theroux might have foreseen his drug spiral firsthand – while they were reportedly working on a play together. Justin and Philip starred in a production of ‘Shopping and Fucking’ in New York in 1998. The play was full of drugs, junkies, and sex, all things that may have trigger Hoffman’s landslide into the world of drug addiction.

Granted, Hoffman has been sober for more than a decade, concentrating on his career and his family, albeit still taking incredibly dark and sometimes twisted roles. It’s still not clear what triggered his relapse this time around, although several sources say that it was stress regarding his relationship. We’ll never know for sure, but it’s pretty uncanny the way his life has followed the plot of that 1998 play.

Hoffman and Theroux remained good friends since that play, and it’s truly unfortunate that none of his friends could see this coming. I guess that’s the way for a lot of addicts – even beloved actors such as Philip Seymour Hoffman.
