Brianna, 13, designs in a beachy bohemian style. She is innovative and reuses old clothes and fabrics. She started designing at 7 and her dream is to own her own boutique.

Matt, 16, likes to take risks and experiment with fashion. He is a “hipster with an edge,” according to the show, and also started designing at age 7. His grandma is wary of his risque designs.

Claire, 13, is competitive and a perfectionist. Her style is girly, modern and classic. Her mom isn’t afraid to let her take the lead, saying she is a type A person.

The contestants are assigned music artists to make looks around.  Brianna gets Florence + The Machine, Matt gets Lady Gaga and Claire gets Katy Perry.  They have just one day to make their looks.

Because Claire won the style challenge, she is given a 15 minute head start on the challenge, which gives her first choice of fabric.   Claire is upset after receiving critiques on her outfit from Vanessa, and she starts crying.

The designers find out about their surprise door twist, where they must create a second look out of unconventional materials.   The idea is to make the look as over-the-top and grand as their assigned pop stars. The contestants have 15 minutes to consult with their assistants, whom they will send into the store to get anything they want from Jo-Ann Fabrics—but only from the crafts section.

Claire decides to get burlap for a bubble skirt, but when her mom comes back from Jo-Ann Fabrics, she doesn’t have the burlap.  “I didn’t realize how important the burlap was for Claire’s vision to make a second look,” she says.

The contestants are told they are going to have second assistants for the rest of the day—students from Fashion Institute of Design & Merchandising.

Matt’s first look includes a gold bustier. He lengthened the skirt to make his outfit less scandalous as the judges didn’t like how revealing his previous looks were. The judges love the bodice on the dress as well.

Brianna’s first look for Florence is a day look with a pink crop top and floral pants. The judges criticize it for being similar to the show your style challenge and for being a little too casual, saying it could have been more high fashion. Her second look, a black dress with peacock feathers and sparkles, wows the judges.

Claire’s second look, a white “birthday cake” dress with various ribbons, mesh and other attachments, doesn’t turn out as well as it could have and Claire’s mom brings up the fact that she forgot to pick up the burlap. The judges criticize the dress for showing too much of the white from the original dress, but they understand her vision.

Brianna ends up winning the challenge. Her mother Lori is excited about the prize because her daughter has to get materials for her pieces from thrift stores.

THE END!
