Tonight’s episode of Project Runway Threads kicks off with the final three designers joining Vanessa Simmons to learn what this week’s challenge is. Vanessa reveals that this week their challenge is to make a “monster mash-up” and each designer will be given photos of monsters and design dresses inspired by their monsters. Ciara gets to work and is automatically inspired with a vampire dress.
Katie has a melt-down, and suffers from designer’s block and breaks down crying because she is falling behind in this week’s competition. Lucas’s Dad watches proudly as he gets to work, and marvels at how well he gets along with Ciara and Katie, because back home he has a problem being bullied at school. Katie decides to “think outside the box” and begins designing a strapless dress, even though she has never done one before.
Vanessa Simmons arrives in the work room and reveals that there is a “surprise door twist” to this challenge, and each designer will have to create a second look. Each designer will be given an all-white dress and a slew of random materials to decorate their white dress with. Lucas decides to make his white dress splatter painted and decorate it with gummi bears. Ciara’s second look she decides should be an underwater theme. Meanwhile, Lucas’s dad is trying to work on his son’s time management and remind him that he may not have time to do all of the wild ideas he has for his all white dress. Time is up, and day one is officially over – the young designers have to put down their scissors and call it a night.
The next day everyone rushes back to the work room so that Lucas, Katie, and Ciara can put the finishing touches on their two dresses. Katie has another near meltdown when she realized that her mom glue-gunned the zipper on the back of her dress shut. Lucas and his dad are putting the finishing touches on their dresses when Vanessa arrives and realizes that they still have a ton of work to do – she reminds them that there is only thirty minutes until the runway show.
Time is up – and it is time for the monster mash-up runway show. Vanessa Simmons and the judges take their seats and the models begin parading down the runway in their two designs of this week. After the fashion show, it’s time for the designers’ individual critiques from the judges.
Up first is Ciara’s dresses, the judges aren’t totally smitten with her underwater dress with gummi bears glued on it. Christian raves about her monster mash-up dress, and marvels at how expensive it looks. Vanessa doesn’t like Lucas’s gummi bear bra he has pasted on top of his white dress, the judges adore the straps on the back of his monster mash-up dress. Christian is a little disappointed that he didn’t use more of the swamp monster he was assigned as an influence on his dress.
Now, it’s time for Vanessa and the judges to reveal this week’s Threads’ winner and the winner of a $25,000 grand prize. After careful consideration they announce that the winner of this week’s Threads is … Katie.
