Prince Charles wants to be King and Camilla Parker-Bowles wants to be Queen but Queen Elizabeth is not giving up her throne just yet! As Queen Elizabeth gets older, she’s slowly starting to scale back on her royal duties. Unfortunately for the people of England, that means that Prince Charles is prepared to step up to the plate. He’s already running the royal press offices, and he’s started taking more and more royal responsibilities from the Queen. For people who had been hoping that the Queen would somehow bypass law and tradition and appoint Prince William to the throne as King with Kate Middleton as his Queen this is not such good news. But since the Queen is still in relatively stable health, but if she can’t complete her royal duties, then Charles will be trying to snake his way into power using the Regency act! This could give Charles the power of the monarchy if not the actual title of King royals are turning to the Regency Act.
What happens if the Regency Act goes into effect is that Prince Charles will become Prince Regent – if the Queen is unable to fulfill her royal duties. Since there’s no way in hell that the Queen will ever abdicate the throne, this is pretty much the only alternative to waiting until the Queen dies of old age. But since the Queen’s health is still relatively fine – if not as robust as it was a few years ago – there has to be a contingency plan for someone else to take on the responsibilities that the Queen is not able to complete. Enter Prince Charles, jumping up and down with joy at finally, FINALLY getting his chance on the throne.
Ok, this is all well and good, but the Queen is still fine, right? Like, she doesn’t have any MAJOR health problems that are preventing her from completing most of her royal duties. I can understand Charles taking over for major international trips [like he did with the Sri Lanka Commonwealth meeting last year], but why does he need to become Prince Regent so early? The Queen’s not on her deathbed nor is she going senile. It just seems like a way for Charles to get his hands on the throne before it’s needed, but then again, I guess it’s not so surprising. I imagine Camilla Parker-Bowles is salivating with excitement at the chance to finally become Princess Regent, and later Queen, or Queen Consort because that’s probably what would happen. Charles and Camilla will take every opportunity to start their rule early, so we should just hope that Queen Elizabeth continues in good health for as long as possible.
