On the #LittleCouple, Bill gets Jen flowers because she had her port removed and it’s a good sign her cancer is behind them. Jen sees the port as a safety net but is glad that it’s gone and the kids can cuddle on her shoulder without hurting her. Bill has to go into work – he talks about Jen’s mom being his former shop manager but she retired to help out with the kids more. Jen asks her mom if she’s going to take care of the shop while they’re in New York to see a specialist about his back.
Bill heads off to work. He’s upset that the kids aren’t coming to New York. Jen says Bill has a milestone birthday – his 40th – and says they talked about waiting til after he recovers from surgery to celebrate. Jen told him she agreed, but actually is not on board. She wants to do something memorable and is planning a small event in New York for the night before his surgery. She tells her mom it’s going to be a nice little dinner party and then if anyone wants to stay to see him after surgery, that’s great.
Jen then talks about turning 40 and says when she turned 40, he surprised her with a wedding vow renewal. She says that was an amazing surprise and she can’t let his 40 pass by without celebrating. Jen and her mom take the kids to get pictures made as a gift. She has the kids at the photo studio and says it’s tough to buy gifts for Bill so she’s going with a sentimental photo gift. She has the kids posing with As and Bs to spell out Baba.
Jen says the kids were doing as well as they could – we see them looking around and wandering off. Then Zoey starts crying and saying no. Zoey is totally fussy and smacks her mom a couple of times. They were trying to get the kids to get them to spell out Baba, but the kids were running a little amok. Jen says wrangling two toddlers at a photo shoot is very stressful. She says she’s thrilled her mom was there to help her.
Zoey ends up on the floor hiding in her blanket and traipses down the hall in it then flops down again. The photographer catches some photos of that too and Jen says Bill will love it. Bill talks to his employees about how long he’ll be gone. He says he’ll be in New York at least a week but doesn’t really know. He tells them he or Jessica will take care of payroll so they’ll definitely get paid. He says Jessica is running everything while he’s out of pocket.
Back at home, Jen is going to film something for Bill’s surprise while her mom watches the kids. Jen has decided to compile a video where everyone says great things about Bill. She starts with herself and says she’s making a This is Bill montage that starts with her saying she loves him very much. She also has to figure out how to smuggle the kids in without Bill knowing. She gets on the phone and starts making calls to find a restaurant and set them all up.
She tries to get the kids to make their video. She’s trying to get the kids to pop out of their play tent and say Happy Birthday Baba. She gets Happy Daddy, Happy Baby, and all sorts of options she says will work really well. Then she gets them both saying Love You Daddy. Bill comes in looking for Zoey – she’s hiding in the tent. She jumps out at him and he talks about Halloween and says last year they had just come back with India and Jen had health stuff so they didn’t do a lot.
They get ready to go pick out pumpkins at a pumpkin patch. Jen says they have horses which Zoey will like. She bribes her with this to get her out the door. They finally get her out the door and into the truck. Will says – no pumpkins. They buckle up and head out. Bill says this will be one of the last times to hang out with the kids before he has to recover from surgery and will be less fun.
They head to the pumpkin patch and look around. Bill says they don’t seem to get it. Will poses for a pic with his foot on a little pumpkin. Jen says they’ve never carved pumpkins before and the kids have no clue this is what you do this time of year. Zoey heads into the fence with the horses as soon as she sees them and they have to get her out. Then she stomps in the horse poop racing to get to them.
Zoey wants to stay with the horses not the pumpkins. Will and Bill go pick out a pumpkin but Zoey refuses to leave the horses. Bill says she really likes ponies and it must be her thing but isn’t good for her daddy’s wallet. He and Will look for a nice small round one for Zoey. One of the employees lets Zoey hold Lady, the pony’s lead, and walk through the patch. Bill is more excited about Halloween this year than last.
Back at home, they serve up pumpkin pie to the kids and she tells Bill he has to have a slice as part of their pre-surgery celebration. She says the kids aren’t good at keeping secrets and she says it’s hard to keep things from Bill. They serve pumpkin pie to the kids with milk. Zoey goes straight for the whipped cream on top. Jen says last year for Halloween, they had just come home with Zoey and she had just been diagnosed with cancer.
Will calls it pumpkin cake then they tell him pie and he gets it right. Bill says he’s really excited about the kids first time trick or treating and they bring the pumpkins over to the floor. They’re doing plastic insert pieces – like the Mr Potato Head kind of pieces so they kids don’t have to mess with sharp knives. Zoey adds stickers. Bill and Jen debate which one of them made a better pumpkin. Jen insists she and Zoey won.
Then she gives Zoey a birthday present to her Baba. Will and Zoey each struggle over with a package. She says this is for his pre-surgery party and he asks what that is and she says it’s what they’re doing right now. He opens the big gift first and sees the photos of the kids holding the Baba letters. She also has some other sized ones for his desk, the wall and for him to travel with. Bill says he’s going to miss the kids while he’s in New York and says the photo will go with him and make him feel better.
The kids come over and play sandwich with him. He tickles Will and Zoey piles on. Jen says it’s hard because the sandwiches will be over for a while once he has surgery. Bill says the photos were amazing and says that kind of sentiment can’t be bought. Will keeps saying Happy Daddy.
In New York, Jen and Bill arrive and he takes a shower and get dressed to go to dinner. This gives her a chance to make last minute calls about his party. Jen’s parents have the kids and are bribing them with promises of chocolate to get them to the restaurant. Jen says her mom came to take over the kids and as soon as she and Bill left, her parents got them on a flight an hour after them. She says it was tricky to coordinate logistics.
Jen calls her mom Judy and checks in with her. She says they’re in New York and Jen says Bill is in the shower and she says she doesn’t think Bill knows what’s going on. Jen ends the call and they ask Will if he wants to go surprise his daddy for his birthday and he says nope then laughs. Jen is really happy that she’s pulled off this surprise for Bill. She calls Bill’s dad and step-mom to check in. She says they’re ready to head over there in 10-15 minutes. His dad says to speed up the shower since Bill’s brothers are already drinking.
Bill’s uncles, aunts and whole family is there. There’s a knock at the hotel room door and it’s Barbara and Chuck, his Mom and step-dad that live in New York. He thinks that’s who they’re seeing for dinner. Jen tells him it’s okay if he has a drink before surgery and they head out. They hop into the car. Jen says their bumps in the road makes life tough but also gives them more of an appreciation of quality of life. She tells him tomorrow will go just fine.
At the restaurant, the family is playing with their kids. Jen says it’s hard with her cancer and Bill’s back but says it’s not impossible and it makes you appreciate having each other even more. They pull up at a nice Italian restaurant and head inside. Jen says she’s feeling pain for him and knows he must be stressed about the surgery but is tough and solid as a rock Bill. They head inside and she says she wants to be strong for him like he was for her with the cancer.
Bill’s dad says they need to all stand back so they can do a surprise greeting. They head into the restaurant and Jen says it’s a reservation for four which is a signal. The hostess takes them to the back and into a private room. She says her husband doesn’t like surprises. They go in and everyone shouts surprise. The kids run over and he hugs them. Jen is happy that she pulled a surprise on him and that he was happy about the surprise.
He says he was blown away and says he was thrilled to see everyone but bummed that he couldn’t party as hard as he wanted to since he had surgery the next day. The kids talk about how much fun they had flying. Will tells Bill that he flew. Bill says this is a great distraction from worrying about the surgery. Jen says his face lit up when he saw the kids because they mean the world to him. Zoey and Will run around and they try to get them to sit for photos.
Jen says Zoey is on hypermode and Will says he wants “ghetti” – spaghetti. Jen says Will and Bill are two peas in a pod and he was the happiest to see Bill. Jen says it was nice to see Bill relaxing and having a good time instead of being stressed about the surgery. They bring the cake out and he blows out the candles. Will follows the waiter and says he wants to help with the cake. Jen calls for everyone’s attention and starts the special presentation. Bill says he thinks it’s a roast.
We see photos of him as a little guy, playing in his rock band in school. Then it’s Jen wishing him happy birthday, then the kids from the tent. She tells him he’s wonderful and there are a bunch of anecdotes about Bill being a trouble maker in school and college. Then his mom talks about how his world changed when he met Jen. His brother says she’s his soul mate and then Jen’s parents talk about how much they love him. His dad says he’s happy he has the love of his life and two wonderful kids.
His mom says he’s an inspiration to them. Jen’s parents say he’s exceeded all their expectations. Bill is in complete tears as he’s watching it. They all share I love you’s at the end and wish him well on his surgery. Then Jen comes back on and says it’s a wrap and then the kids say one more happy birthday. Everyone breaks into applause. Jen says you don’t see Baba cry very much. They call for Bill to make a speech. He thanks them all for coming from a long distance to see him off for surgery means a lot.
He says this means the world to him. He’s all teary and they applaud him again. He and Jen hug and kiss. Jen says she doesn’t think Bill realizes what an amazing human being he is. She says he’s an amazing father, brother, husband, son and is everyone’s rock. His mom hugs and kisses him and tells him she loves him. Jen says she hopes he feels good inside since tomorrow won’t be an easy day for him.
He thanks Jen for making this a good day. He denies crying and says real men don’t cry. He says they can go back to the hotel and booze some more before he has to cut off. He tells her he wants a back rub and she says she knew that was coming.
THE END!
