On the last episode, when Alaric (Matt Davis) realized that Jo (guest star Jodi Lyn O’Keefe) couldn’t be compelled, he asked Elena (Nina Dobrev) to do some digging into her background. After learning that Enzo (Michael Malarkey) had been captured by Tripp, Caroline (Candice Accola) teamed up with Matt and Stefan (Paul Wesley) to rescue him before Tripp learned their true identities. Armed with some new information about her past, Sarah (guest star Gabrielle Walsh) broke into Tripp’s (guest star Colin Ferguson) office and was surprised when she found Matt (Zach Roerig) there, doing some investigating of his own. Meanwhile, Elena was forced to deal with the consequences of her actions, and Jeremy (Steven R. McQueen) hit rock bottom, lashing out in a destructive way. Lastly, Damon (Ian Somerhalder) was determined to take matters into his own hands when he received some upsetting news. Did you watch the last episode? Damon tells Elena he knows Alaric wiped him out of her mind but is hoping some of it is coming back. He says imagining this moment is all that has kept him going. She says she remembers pain and the terrible things he did to the people she cared about, but nothing good that happened between them. She says she knows she loved him and forgave him for all the awful stuff but remembers nothing. She says she’s sorry but she just doesn’t feel it anymore. He’s crushed. She says she really is sorry. She closes the door softly on him.
Damon plays with Alaric’s IV machine while he recounts all the horrible stuff he’s done to Elena including snapping her brother’s neck. Ric says he would take it back if he could. Damon says even though he’s the one who killed him, he’s glad he survived. Damon makes the equipment go off and Ric says if he kills him now, he’ll be really dead. Jo comes in and Damon says she’s going to be in demand from a bunch of vampires who might like to be human again.
Jo says it was a perfect storm of treatable death wound, her being there and adrenaline to save the most interesting guy she’s met in a long time. Damon says she’s bossy and he likes her. Jo asks Ric if he has a nice suit and says she’s releasing him so he can be her date to a fundraiser tonight. Tripp comes to and finds Matt, Stefan and Enzo lurking there all threatening like. Stefan tells him to get on with the questions. Enzo says Tripp is not a one man show and he wants to know who all is in it.
Matt says they can wait out the vervain then compel him to never come back to Mystic Falls again. They ask what the other uniformed people are doing and he doesn’t answer. Stefan grabs a hammer and smashes his hand and Tripp says they are tracking vampires like Caroline. He tells the others to take two hours to look into what he’s said then kill the guy because he’s a liability.
Elena tells Caroline about her Damon reunion. She says she thought his eyes were pretty and blue, but no memories came back. Caroline reminds her that her life is good now – she’s got good grades, a career path and a cute new guy in Liam. Caroline sees him coming and takes off. Liam tells her Lady Whitmore came in – the woman that Elena miraculously saved – and says she doesn’t remember being injured. Elena says she must have been really drunk but he wants to look into her labs.
Elena says volunteers don’t have access to labs but he says he’s going to peek anyway. He tells her if she rats him out, she can’t be his date to the hospital fundraiser tonight. He steals a kiss and takes off. Back in 1994, Kai is trying to put the ascendant back together as Bonnie wakes in pain from being shot by an arrow. He tells her to help and she says she won’t because he’s psycho and will kill her as soon as they get out.
He reminds her he can steal her magic and grabs her arm to drain her. She stabs him in the neck and he falls to the rug and it looks like he bled out. We’ll see. Now, Stefan comes to see Caroline and she reminds him they’re not friends anymore and tells him to hit the road. He says she’s not safe – that Tripp’s men are looking for her. She says she can take care of herself but then Liz calls and tells her some of Tripp’s men ran her off the road and are threatening to kill her if they don’t get him back.
Caroline tries to call Enzo as she and Stefan drive in the car. She’s freaking out and he tells her they’re almost there and she reminds him that Tripp had two hours left on his life about two hours ago. Enzo calls her back and says Tripp is alive and resisting torture. She asks why he didn’t answer his phone and he says his fingers are covered in blood so the touch screen wouldn’t work. She tells him to not kill him and says her mom was kidnapped and she needs Tripp alive to get her back.
Tripp tells Matt he thought getting rid of the vamps would make their lives better. He can’t believe Matt is on their side and Matt says his side is complicated. Enzo comes in and says Liz was kidnapped. Tripp tells them where to set the meet – near the border – and says to send Matt because they trust him. In 94, Bonnie runs to the hospital looking for antibiotics, bandages and pain killers to treat her wound. She slaps on a huge bandage and starts working on putting the ascendant back together before the eclipse.
At the fundraiser, Liv chews Tyler out for doing a bad champagne pour. She demonstrates how to do it properly, but I can’t believe he doesn’t know how since he grew up with $$$. He says he’s trying to repay her and she says working the bar for one night won’t pay her back for killing a guy for her. He says he’d rather change once a month than wear this tie. Ric and Jo come in and Damon joins them. Ric is surprised to see her name on a plaque for a clamp she invented.
Damon asks if she used witchery to invent it but she says she’s not practicing and Jo asks Ric why he’s there. Ric says he invited himself along and that he’s stalking Elena. They see Elena with Liam and Jo gives Damon the 411 on the super smart, nice guy. He’s not happy. Liam kisses her and Damon stands about three feet away looking on in obvious discomfort. She sends him for a drink and tells Damon she didn’t know he was there.
He comes back for her drink order and Damon introduces himself. Liam asks if he’s the ex that supposedly died. Damon covers for her and says it was more of an emotional death but says they’re in a good place. Damon tries to stare the guy down and says he’s confident and sexy. Damon tells Liam to go get her a chardonnay. He goes and Elena says she hates chardonnay. Damon says he knows and hauls her off to the dance floor.
Enzo greets Caroline with a – hello gorgeous – and she asks what they’ve done to Tripp. Enzo asks Stefan if he got Caroline to pay attention to her by ignoring her. Enzo tells Stefan that it’s clear now and tells Stefan that Caroline has a thing for him. Stefan is shocked. Enzo leaves since he knows he doesn’t stand a chance. Caroline tells Stefan they will not be talking about what he said.
Damon dances with Elena and she asks why they’re dancing and he says because it would be a shame to deny the world of good of a dancer he is. He reminds her of when they first danced. He says Stefan stood her up and he stepped in all sexy and handsome and saved the day. She says she’s there with someone and he can’t show up announced. He says he came through time and space for her.
He says even if he was drowning in grief, he would have hung onto every moment with her than have it erased. He says he would rather be in agony then erase even one memory of her. She says she needs air and goes out. Ric tells Jo it’s his fault and she tells him not to mix painkillers with booze. He says he’s happy to feel the human pain. He says they should start a support group as former supernaturals.
She says her powers aren’t gone, just put away because she needed to get away from her dysfunctional family. Luke comes over after flirting with a radiologist and asks Liv what’s up with Tyler. She says it was a short story. He tells her when the coven calls them home, relationships won’t matter. She tells him he sounds like their father and tells him to leave her to do what she wants.
Back in 94, Bonnie scrambles with the pieces of the ascendant but can’t find one last piece. Then the lights in the clinic go off. She goes to look around and Kai is there with the missing piece. He tells her she was naughty for stealing it and asks if she was planning on leaving him behind. He tells her she left a trail of blood. She blows him back with magic and goes running out to Damon’s car.
Of course it won’t crank. He’s there and chokes her – he crippled the car so she couldn’t get away. Kai tells her they have an hour til the eclipse and tells her it’s time to go home. He’s got her, she’s injured and she’s pretty much reassembled the ascendant so it looks like they are heading out.
Damon does shots and so does Elena. She tells him she wants to remember and he says it’s too late. She says she wants to try. She says this piece of her life missing is driving her crazy. He asks how. She says maybe if they unwind the memories maybe something will come back. He’s eager to try. She tells him to take her to the last place she told him she loved him.
In 94, Kai has Bonnie back in the tunnels and brought along the teddy bear for her. She thanks him. He tells her that he did murder or maim most of his family but now knows he could have handled his anger better. He says he isn’t planning on killing the Gemini coven and says he would do anything to get his family back. He says she’s a good person, brave, loyal and patient.
He says he wants to be more like her and wants to learn to live in the world again. She says they can go. Stefan and Matt show up with Tripp. Caroline goes for her mom but has to stop at the border. Matt says to let her go but they want Tripp first. Liz says it’s okay and to let Tripp go. They let him go and then Tripp crosses the border and collapses with his throat cut.
Matt asks Stefan what he did and he says it wasn’t him – says Enzo must have turned him before they got there. Matt is distraught even though he didn’t like the guy. Tripp’s guys take off. In 94, the eclipse is happening and Kai tells Bonnie now or never. She cuts her hand and starts to chant. He grabs her wrist so she can’t try to go without him. She puts her foot on her teddy bear and chants. The ascendant moves and he says – so long 1994. It didn’t work. She says she’s lost her magic.
He grabs her hands and realizes she has no magic. She wonders if she accidentally put it somewhere safe. He asks where she put her magic. She tells him he wanted to be more like her and he says – you put it in the bear. He picks up the bag with her teddy in it and sees it’s not there. She says it’s gone, with her magic, and they are stuck there forever. She tells him sorry.
Damon takes Elena to the city line but she doesn’t remember. He asks what she does. She says she knows he had a plan to stop the Travelers then drove his car into the grill to blow himself up to save them. Damon tells her she hopped it the car with him and says he couldn’t go without her. He says that’s when he knew she was crazy enough to be his.
He tells her about the night of her graduation when she told him she was in love with him but wouldn’t apologize about it. He tells her there was a summer night before college when she showed him a meteor shower. He says the shooting stars began and then rain started. He says he took her hand and they stood in the rain. She says it’s not working.
He tells her to try harder and she says she knows they had an amazing life together and gets what they had. She says when she looks in his eyes now, she feels like she’s looking at a stranger because she can never give him what he wants. He says there are things you can’t erase and says she knows that. He tells her he’s sorry too. She goes running for the city line and steps over it. It all comes rolling back – all the memories.
She chokes up the water she drowned in and says it’s the only way to get rid of the compulsion. He says even if she can’t remember anything, the last thing he would ever do is let her risk her life. Caroline takes Liz to the hospital at the college. She tells Stefan to leave and Liz asks her to go check the wait. Stefan asks her to help get Caroline to stop freezing him out but she says she can’t.
The nurse comes in and Caroline and Stefan head out. She tells him she heard him asking her mom for help and says not to do it. He asks why she has a thing for him and she says she doesn’t. He asks why she did have a thing for him – past tense. She says she doesn’t want to talk about it and he says he wants to know how he missed it.
She says she thought he was having a thing for, helped her when she woke up a vampire and she couldn’t imagine Elena ever letting someone like him go when she moved on to Damon. He says he’s sorry and she tells him he can’t be sorry for not feeling it back. He says he’s saying sorry about the way he treated her.
She says if he had felt anything for her like she did for him, he wouldn’t have walked away. She says she gets that he was grieving and accepts his apology. He asks if she still hates him and she says she has to hate him for ruining their friendship so she doesn’t have to hate herself for ruining it. She walks away. Elena tells Damon she remembered some of their life.
Damon tells her when she became a vampire, he was happy that she could be with him forever. He says part of him was heartbroken that she wouldn’t have the life she dreamed of. He says now she’s got some of that back. He tells her she’s better off without him and that she should live her life and be happy without him. He says he loves her enough to let her go.
She asks again about the night it rained on them at the meteor shower. He changes the story and just says they were cold and muddy and drove home. He walks away. Jo and Ric come back to her place after the party and he says he needs to rethink the painkiller thing. She says she wants to get out of her dress and order a pizza. She changes and he sees her in the mirror and notes a large scar.
She says her brother tried to gut her with a hunting knife and she lost her spleen. Guess we know whose sister she is… He tells her he’s had a crazy life too and calls them a dysfunctional match. They kiss. Liam comes to see Elena and has Lady Whitmore’s file. He says she’s a liar with secrets and a dead boyfriend who’s not dead. He tells her to tell him the truth or he’ll figure it out on his own.
Damon pours out a drink on Horatio Fell’s drink. He’s getting hammered. He thinks back to the stormy night he didn’t finish telling Elena about. They stood in the rain and she told him it would clear up. It didn’t. He kissed her and they stood in the rain kissing and she told him to promise her this is for forever and he did. They held each other and kissed.
Damon walks through the woods and drinks a toast to optimism. He sees Bonnie’s teddy bear at the cemetery and snatches it up. He says – Bonnie, you’re still alive.
