The CW’s much loved supernatural drama, The Vampire Diaries, returns tonight with a whole new episode called “The Devil Inside.” On tonight’s show Elena is going to suddenly find herself in a life-threatening situation with only minutes to figure out how to save herself. On the last episode which was the 100th episode Katherine was in the hospital and she was dying, but she was still alive. No one knows whether she will even last one more day. Jeremy, Damon, Caroline, Elena and Stefan were drinking and reminiscing about the worst things that Katherine ever did to them. Most of them recounted how she almost killed them, but Caroline had them beat because Katherine actually killed her. Other than that not much had been released about the episode yet, but we did know it was going to concentrate around Katherine who was a 500-year-old doppelganger.
When Enzo (guest star Michael Malarkey) brings Damon a gruesome present and insists that they bond by committing an act of revenge, Damon is going to make an effort to do the honorable thing. After finding himself in awkward and confusing conversations with Nadia (guest star Olga Fonda), Matt will impulsively decide to throw a party, where Caroline makes a stunning confession to Elena, then has to face the consequence of her actions with Stefan and Tyler. Aaron (guest star Shaun Sipos) will do his best to make amends for his family’s past misdeeds and will start a new life for himself. Finally, Elena is going to suddenly find herself in a life-threatening situation with only minutes to figure out how to save herself. Kellie Cyrus directed the episode, and it was written by Brett Matthews & Sonny Postiglione.

Katherine/Elena greets Matt with a kiss and he says she’s in a good mood. She says we’re alive. She asks if he’s still using vervain and says no but he still has a bracelet protecting him. She yanks it off and confesses that she’s actually Katherine. She compels him to tell her all about Elena so she can masquerade as Elena effectively. Nadia is there with her as well. Nadia tells Matt they’re working on making it permanent. She asks for birthday information and other personal information about her friends and Elena’s relationships with them. Finally, she asks him how Elena broke up with him.
Nadia comes in and tells Katherine that Mia needs her corpse and K says that’s morbid. They have to make the transfer permanent but are worried that Elena is going to turn up and take over the body. Nadia says they need to chain her to the bed while she goes out in case Elena takes over so she can’t escape. Damon is leaving voice mails for Elena that K is ignoring.
Damon comes in and tells Stefan he got rid of the corpse but then Nadia shows up and demands it – she says she wants to bury it in Bulgaria with her family. Stefan tells him to give over the body but Damon refuses and says she’s maggot food and he’s not giving back the body. Nadia attacks but Damon fights her off easily.
Matt comes in looking for his phone. Tyler is crashed on his couch with music blaring. Matt’s late for work and annoyed. Tyler pours some whiskey for his breakfast as Matt criticizes him. Matt asks him to tell him what happened in New Orleans and he says there were witches and Originals but now he’s starting over and no more drama. Matt tells him he’s going to throw him a welcome back party. He tells him to clean up the house and take a shower while he invites some people over.
Caroline is in a cleaning frenzy when Aaron comes in looking for Elena. She offers to take a message and he says that he cut off the funding for the vampire experiments and that’s he’s really sorry about everything. Caroline says she’ll tell her and he leaves. But then Enzo shows up and startles Aaron.
Stefan calls Caroline and tells her that Damon is trying to get hold of Elena. She’s not interested in helping Damon but Stefan works on her. He says that Elena is good for Damon and that when he’s happy, he’s not a murderous jerk. They figure out the Elena is MIA since she’s not with either of them.
The phone buzzes again and Katherine is annoyed with its persistence. Something funky starts happening and her eyes turn black and then it’s Elena who’s back in control of the body. She has no clue where she is or why she’s chained up. She begins to struggle against her bonds and says – Oh my God, Katherine…
Elena struggles with the chains while the phone continue to buzz. She finally gets free and grabs the phone but then Nadia is there and snatches it. Elena accuses her of putting Katherine in her, but Nadia says a gypsy phrase and it snaps back from Elena to Katherine. She tells her that Elena is fighting her for control. They need to get her body back from Damon ASAP.
Damon and Stefan hang out in the grill playing pool. Caroline shows up and says she can’t find Elena anywhere. Stefan tells Damon she’s there to help him get Elena back. He reminds her she once said calling him Satan was an insult to Satan. Damon asks if they are babysitting him and says he doesn’t need their help. He leaves.
Caroline tries to call Elena again and Katherine complains about how needy Elena’s friends are. K says she needs to go to Tyler’s party so she can ease their suspicions. She says she can ask Damon where he buried her but Nadia isn’t convinced. She thinks she’ll be busted as not being Elena. Nadia begins peppering her with personal questions about Elena that Katherine can’t answer. K says she knows who can help.
Tyler and Matt unload party supplies and he wants to know if Matt invited Caroline. He asks if he’s trying to win her back but Tyler dismisses without answering. Katherine calls Matt and tells him she needs his help. She meets him in the park again.
Damon comes home to find Enzo on his couch drinking his good liquor. He tells him they have business. He’s brought a body bag with him that’s lying on the floor – on the nice antique rug. How rude…
Damon tells him they’re even and asks what’s in the bag. Enzo says it’s more like who. He says that he found out that he killed all the Whitmores except for one in each generation so he can keep killing them off for sport. Enzo says he wrote Damon off too quickly and that he has a present for him. He unzips the bag and shows him Aaron and he’s alive but unconscious. Enzo asks if Damon wants to kill him or if he wants Enzo to do it.
At the party, Katherine looks around and isn’t happy. She calls to Matt and he comes over calling her Elena. She compels him to go find a blonde to hit on and he takes off. Stefan stands alone not enjoying the party when she finds him. He jokes that she’s alive and she says she is and then asks why he’s drinking beer from a cup. He asks where she’s been and she says around and thinking and processing the Damon thing.
Stefan tells her Damon wants her back and she asks if it’s weird for him and he says Damon is better with her than without her. She asks how he’s feeling about Katherine dying and he says he’s okay. He says they had a thing, it ended and she died. Katherine asks if he’s not even a little heartbroken. She says maybe they should give her a funeral or something. She asks where she’s buried and he says that Damon said he put where she was always meant to be.
Enzo tells Damon that killing Aaron will cement their fresh start. Damon explains that he’s a friend of a friend and Enzo says that he doesn’t think he’s gone that soft and reminds him his grandfather sliced their eyes open. He tells him to end him and give them piece. Caroline calls and tells him to get his ass to the party because Elena is there.
Aaron is coming to and Enzo pressures him to kill him. Instead, Damon breaks Enzo’s neck and snatches off Aaron’s magic bracelet. He compels him to get the hell out of town and never come back.
Nadia finds Katherine taking out the trash at the party and Nadia mocks her. Katherine says Elena is annoyingly helpful. She tells her she thinks her body is under the old church where Damon thought she was all those years when he assumed she was dead. Nadia tells her to head into the party and say her goodbyes so no one will follow her.
Caroline corners her to confess that she had sex with a totally terrible person. Katherine asks who she’s talking about and she says Klaus. K is shocked and Caroline tells her to tell her how awful she is. She says that Caroline is not a bad person. K asks her how it was having sex with Klaus because she noticed Tyler was in earshot. Caroline notices too and then looks distraught by the hurt and angry look on Tyler’s face that the girl he loves slept with his tormenter…
Katherine shows up to meet Mia and Nadia and they have her body. They have to seal Katherine’s spirit in Elena body and they need some blood to do it. Mia stabs Katherine’s corpse and then sprinkles some blood. She says a spell as she works. Elena is suddenly present in her own body and sees what’s going on. She turns around and then asks what’s happening now. Mia tells her she needs silence to get rid of Elena forever. She’s trying to figure out what to do.
Tyler is drinking whiskey when Caroline comes in. He tells her to get out. She asks to explain. He reminds her how many people he killed including Tyler’s mom and his entire pack plus Elena’s family. She won’t leave and then he gets all wolfie on her. But then Stefan comes in and slaps him down until Tyler tells Stefan she slept with Klaus. Stefan is horrified and stares at her in shock. She slaps her hands over her face in shame. Stefan punches him in the face and says Caroline doesn’t deserve what he’s doing.
Nadia asks Katherine where she wants to go when the spell is done. Mia says it will only take a few more seconds. Elena attacks Mia and then Nadia and then takes off before they can complete the ritual. Nadia realizes too late it wasn’t her mom she was talking to.
Damon can’t come into the party so he’s stuck at the door calling for Matt to let him in. He gives up and walks around outside.
Mia and Nadia comes to and Nadia tells her to finish the spell. Elena is in the woods and tries to used Nadia’s pilfered phone but there is a pin number on it. Mia continues the spell and Elena begins struggling with Katherine’s memories in her head. Mia continues the spell and then lights Katherine’s body and it blazes. Elena screams “no” and holds her head. She sees all the horrible things Katherine has done and that were done to her.
Elena runs and runs and finds Damon – she runs to him and takes him in her arms. She is just about to tell him what happened when her eyes turn black and Katherine takes over her body – presumably for good. Damon asks her to talk to him. She tells him she’s been looking for him and that they need to talk.
She says she listened to all his voice mails and he says that he messed up and shouldn’t have ever left him. He tells her that he’s the best person he’s ever known and that he was foolish to think he would ever taint her. He says he needs her and that she’s the best influence on him.
He tells her she’s the good and he needs a little good in his life. He says without it there’s an awful lot of darkness. She tells him it’s a lot of pressure. She says she’s glad she makes him a better person and happy but says she can’t be the only thing he lives for and can’t worry about what will happen if they break up or fight and who he’ll take it out on.
She tells him she knows what he did to Katherine when she was weak and dying and how he tortured her. He asks why they’re talking about K and she says it’s about the person he really is and that he was right to let her go. She says it’s over for good and walks away. He shakes his head and walks away. Stefan is there and calls his name and Damon asks if he’s enjoying it a little bit.
The party is breaking up and Matt is cleaning. Tyler tells him it’s a big ass house – a mansion – and his parents are dead and his girl slept with his nemesis and he has no idea what to do with the rest of his long, long life. He says at least he has a big ass house. He’s still drinking and is clearly sotted. Matt says they should get out of there for a while. Tyler says Klaus put him through hell and crushed him and when he thought Klaus couldn’t do anything more to him… He breaks off but he’s clearly talking about him shagging Caroline. He hangs his head and Matt comforts him.
Mia tells Nadia that Katherine has the body of Elena permanently and asks for her payment. But then Katherine is there and yanks Mia’s heart out. Nadia says they need to get on the road but K says she’s not going anywhere. She says for the first time in 500 years, she’s in the clear with no one chasing her. She says most of the people in Mystic Falls would slit their throats to protect her. She tells Nadia to stay as well. She says she may not learn to be a good Mom but she can try because they have all the time in the world. Nadia says she’s not leaving. K tells her she wants her, immortality and Stefan. She says he’s her one true love. Nadia tells her that she won’t stand in her way.
Stefan finds Caroline in front of the fire and she says she wishes she had a rock to crawl under. She asks if she’s horrible and he sits down by her. He asks her what she thought when she found out he was doing Katherine and she admits she thought ick. He reminds her she didn’t judge him even though she wasn’t thrilled. Stefan tells her that she’s a horrible person – thoughtless, shallow and undefendable. She laughs and he says he doesn’t even know what Klaus sees in her and she laughs genuinely.
Aaron stops when he sees someone lying in the road. It’s Enzo. Whoops. He tells Aaron he’s been waiting for him. He says Damon has been teaching him a game. Damon is there and Aaron says that he said he’d let him go. He says Elena will be mad at him. Aaron asks what he wants and Damon says he wants his past back.
Aaron reminds Damon he killed his whole family and Damon says they deserved it. Aaron says Elena was too good for him. Damon agrees he thought that too at one point. He says that he struggled with the notion of sparing people because it was “right.” He says he was conflicted but now he’s clear. He says Elena thinks he’s a monster and she’s right. He bares his teeth and attacks Aaron killing him. Enzo says – that’s the Damon Salvatore that I love.
