THE VAMPIRE DIARIES returns to the CW at 8PM EST tonight for a brand new episode! In “Man on Fire,” Enzo learns about his long-lost love; Elena becomes obsessive with her relationship with Damon; Markos gets Sloan to help with a ritual to get rid of an ancient Travelers curse.
On the last episode both Stefan (Paul Wesley) and Elena (Nina Dobrev) suddenly had unsettling dreams of an alternate version of the life they might have had together. Bonnie (Kat Graham) had a disturbing encounter with Grams (guest star Jasmine Guy), who warned her about frightening changes on the Other Side. Enzo (guest star Michael Malarkey) gave Damon (Ian Somerhalder) unwanted relationship advice, then admitted he was searching for a woman he loved decades before while he was held captive by the Augustines. Liv (guest star Penelope Mitchell) enlisted Matt (Zach Roerig), Jeremy (Steven R. McQueen) and Tyler (Michael Trevino) to help track the Travelers and keep them from taking control of Mystic Falls. Bonnie was hurt and angry when she learned that Jeremy is working with Liv behind her back. Luke (guest star Chris Brochu) showed up at the Salvatore house and explained what he knows about Markos (guest star Raffi Barsoumian) and the Travelers to Damon, Elena and Enzo. Matt had a terrifying encounter with inhabitants of the Other Side. Finally, when Damon found Markos, he is both relieved and disturbed by what Markos had told him. Did you watch last week’s episode? On tonight’s episode Enzo, through flashbacks to election night in 1960, learns what happened to his long-lost love; Elena obsesses over the state of her relationship with Damon; Markos enlists Sloan’s help in a ritual designed to break an ancient curse against the Travelers. Stefan tries to distract Elena from obsessing about the state of her relationship with Damon. Damon demands the Traveler knife, forcing Jeremy and Matt to admit it’s gone missing.

Stefan is helping Elena study for her psych class. He’s quizzing her from cards and she thanks him for helping her study especially the day after Damon told her he never wanted to see her again. Bonnie shows up and Elena tells her that Stefan is the tutor from hell. Elena asks Bonnie if she’s okay with the whole other side falling apart. Bonnie reminds them she won’t live if the other side disintegrates. Elena vows she won’t let it happen again. Bonnie is worried about the Travelers taking over their home town, but Stefan says Damon is working on that.
Jeremy and Matt tear up Tyler’s house but can’t find the Traveler knife. Damon shows up and tells them to invite him in. They don’t and he demands they hand over the Traveler knife so he can clean up Mystic Falls. They tell him they can’t find it and Damon is pissed plus Tyler is MIA.
Tyler wakes up in chains and panics and then Julian, the Traveler in his body takes back over. Marcos tells him their days of living on the run are nearly over. He calls Sloan and the other Travelers over. He tells them they have lived too long without a home because of the witches’ curse. He says he has to have the power to undo the curse. He offers Sloan Tyler’s blood to start the experiment to break the curse. She does and he slices her throat. She falls to the floor.
Damon calls Enzo and asks if he knows where he can find a Traveler. He tells him Tyler the hybrid has likely been kidnapped by them. Enzo says he can’t go hunting with him because he has some people to meet. Liv works at the bar while Bonnie asks her if she knows anything about fixing the other side. Enzo shows up then and Liv tells Bonnie she’s not a fan of his.
Enzo sits with Stefan and he tells him to go away because Damon isn’t there. Enzo says he needs to chat and asks Elena if Caroline told her about his search for Maggie, the girl from the Augustine lab. He says they talked for hours and developed an attachment. He says she left in 1950 and likely went on to teach at a university and live her life. He shows them something Sloan the Traveler gave her. It’s a photo of Maggie dead on the floor.
Enzo says Maggie died in 1960 in Mystic Falls – someone tore the head off her body. Elena asks if that was when Stefan was in his ripper phase and he says it wasn’t. Enzo calls Liv over and works some magic for him. She holds Stefan and Elena at bay with her magic because Enzo has her brother Luke. She tells them she’s sorry. She lets up on the magic pain and Enzo resumes questioning Stefan.
Enzo recalls Maggie’s sweet face as he drinks. Luke tries to reason with his sister to let him take her place but Enzo sends him and his captors away. Enzo has compelled everyone in the bar and is torturing the two other vamps with ropes dipped in vervain water. Enzo says he’ll let everyone go once Stefan admits that he killed her. He shows Stefan a journal found on Maggie’s body.
Enzo reads from it. She writes about not finding love and then came back to Whitmore looking for Enzo but thought he died in the fire. Stefan says by 1960 he was cleaned up. Enzo calls Damon who is frustrated in his Traveler hunt. He asks Damon to look for something in Stefan’s journals and he says his brother burned them all.
Damon realizes Enzo is with Stefan and Elena and asks why he has his murder voice on. Damon asks what the problem is. Enzo tells him that Stefan ripped Maggie in the 60s but before Damon can defend Stefan, Enzo hangs up on him. Enzo looks up the history of the night Maggie died. It was the night of the presidential election where JFK gained the presidency. Stefan thinks back.
We see a woman in Mystic Falls. Stefan bites the woman just a little but then compels her and sends her on the way. But then Maggie is there and tells him she knows who he and Damon are. He asks what she knows about them and she says she’s been searching for Damon because he knew a friend of hers that died in the fire. He says his brother is a monster and she shouldn’t talk to him. She says she wants to kill Damon, not talk to him. Stefan goes all vampy but he says he just did it to scare him.
Enzo chokes Bonnie and says he’s going to kill her. Stefan tells him to stop and says he did kill Maggie – he says he ripped her throat out but had forgotten about her until now. Liv takes Bonnie upstairs and Bonnie says that if Enzo kills Stefan or Elena, the curse can’t be broken and the witches win. She says she knows that’s why she’s helping Enzo.
Damon calls Caroline and gets her voice mail. Sheriff Forbes comes up and he asks her about a murder on November 8, 1960. She has the file and shows it to him. He says he knows Stefan didn’t kill Maggie and she asks how he knows and he says – because I killed her.
secret lab. She asks him to make her a vampire and says she can save him if she has the strength. The doctor is back and she tells him to hurry and do it. He bites his wrist and tells her to take his hand. He rips off her vervain bracelet and compels her. He tells her to leave, never come back and forget that I ever existed and that I love you. She backs up and he picks up her bracelet and hands it to her though it’s burning her skin. She takes it and leaves.
Enzo now toys with his lighter and drinks whiskey. He goes back to Stefan and stabs him again. He’s enjoying torturing him. Stefan screams. Bonnie and Liv sit together upstairs and Bonnie tells her she’s not happy about her letting her pretend to teach her when Liv is much more powerful. Bonnie asks her again about fixing the other side to help her loved ones that are there.
Enzo tortures Stefan some more when Damon shows up. Damon tells him to let go of the hostages and Enzo asks whose side he’s on. Damon says he gets it that seeing Maggie again was his safety line. He says there’s probably a chapter in Elena’s psych book about it and asks Stefan if he’s Elena’s study buddy now. Damon says the thing is – he didn’t know she was his Maggie. He says he got a message from a woman on election night and went to meet her.
She tells him she’s a reporter and wants to write an article on him. She asks him about the fire of 1958 and he says he remembers it. Maggie asks for a better quote since over a dozen people died. She says he’s being glib and he tells her he’s sorry since he has a switch in his head that turns off unwanted feelings. She pulls out a syringe and tries to stab him and he sees the Augustine logo and assumes she’s there to take him back. Damon rips her head off and walks away.
Damon tells Enzo she didn’t stand a chance and then tells Stefan he made it look like he did it because he was mad at Stefan. Damon tells Enzo he had his switch off and says if he wants to hate or kill him to go ahead, but it’s between them. Enzo tells him he can’t hate him because if he does, then he has nothing left. He says there is another option.
Enzo closes his eyes and thinks hard. He flips his humanity switch. Damon tries to stop him, but it’s too late. Enzo opens his eyes and tells Damon he was right – now he doesn’t have a care in the world.
Sloan lies on the floor as Tyler takes back over his body then Julian fights him for control of it. Sloan sits up gasping and says the lights hurt. He tells her it’s the transition. She gulps the bag of blood he hands her. Then someone brings over the last of the doppelganger blood he says will break the witch magic. He chants something and she drinks it all down.
Enzo drinks and smashes the bottle and says it’s fun not caring. Damon agrees it is. Enzo toasts Maggie that he says he feels nothing for. Damon offers to leave with him to go wherever he wants. Enzo releases all the hostages except Liv. He says he wants to test something and grabs her up and then takes a drink. Then he chokes Damon. Stefan breaks free of his ropes but Enzo splashes him with vervain water, snatches Elena and takes off.
Damon tells Stefan to help the dying witch while he goes after Enzo and Elena. Stefan tells Damon that he can’t save Enzo. Damon calls Enzo and begs him not to hurt Elena and says if he won’t, he wont’ ever ask him for anything again.
Elena tells Enzo she knows what he’s feeling and says he’s just biding his time until it all comes crashing back around. She fights him but he dominates and breaks her neck. Stefan is there and Enzo asks where Damon is and Stefan says he found him first. They face off.
Stefan throws Enzo through a car windshield and theybrawl full on. Bonnie and Liv share a drink and she asks Bonnie to call and check on Luke. She says she already took care of it. Liv tells Bonnie there’s nothing to be done. She says the other side is like any other spell and if you take out one component, it implodes. She says Marco’s escape was that component. Bonnie says there’s always another fix. Liv tells her that Jeremy loves her and deserves to know she’s leaving.
Damon finds Elena and panics but then realizes she’s just out. He scoops her up and walks off. Enzo is getting the better of Stefan and says he bets Stefan wishes he had killed him back when he had the chance. Stefan is lying against a car, injured when Enzo punches through the gas tank and pulls out his lighter. He asks Stefan if they should burn together or just Stefan. Stefan grabs him Enzo by the heart and holds him close. Stefan says without his emotions, Enzo can’t be saved.
Stefan says he knows Enzo won’t stop until he kills Damon. Enzo tells him it will be a sweet piece of revenge when Damon finds out Stefan killed his best friend. Stefan looks confused, then Enzo throws himself backwards so that Stefan inadvertently rips out his heart. He grabs Enzo’s phone and plays the message from Damon and looks troubled.
Damon brings Elena in and lays her on her bed. He gets a text “from Enzo” that says – Cape Horn it is. Looks like Stefan is going to try and cover up Enzo’s death. Damon strokes Elena’s face. She comes to and sits up but there is no one there. Stefan shows up and hugs Elena. He asks if she’s okay and she says she doesn’t know how she got back to her dorm. He tells her Enzo is dead and admits he killed him. He says Damon doesn’t know and he doesn’t want to tell him. He asks her if that wouldn’t be better. She says she doesn’t know and he tells her Damon thinks Enzo left town. He says this would destroy Damon and they just got him back. She reluctantly agrees.
Bonnie is with Matt and Jeremy and they tell her they think the Travelers have Tyler. They tell her they’re stuck there on Damon’s threat. Bonnie asks to speak to Jer alone. Matt leaves them. Jeremy asks why she’s so serious. He asks what it is and Bonnie tells him if the other side goes away, then she will too but tells him Liv thinks there may be a way to save her. Stefan calls and tells her Enzo is dead and Damon can’t find out. But then Enzo is there and tells her that Stefan is doing damage control. He tells her he’ll see her again and that he’s good at revenge. He passes through her to the other side.
The Travelers chant as Sloan wakes up. Marco says it’s the moment of truth. He asks if she’s still a vampire or is human again. She slices her hand and says she’s not healing. The doppelganger blood cured her of vampirism. He tells her with this magic, they can break the curse once and for all and make Mystic Falls their home. He tells Sloan she won’t be there to see it and kills her. He tells the Travelers they need a lot more doppelganger blood.
Damon is drinking when Stefan comes home. He tells him he knows what Stefan is thinking. He says he knows he’s mad at him about Enzo being in their lives. Damon tells him he can fix Enzo so he’s not a threat. Stefan tells him he checked on Elena and that she’s all right. Damon says he knows since he was the one who took her home. He asked why he didn’t leave a note and he says he doesn’t need to score points with her.
Stefan tells Damon the Enzo thing isn’t his fault and says he should just leave the guy alone. Damon tells him when they were trapped together and he would complain about Stefan, Enzo defended Stefan and told him he was lucky to have a brother to love and go on for. He says Enzo stopped him from hating Stefan and that’s why he owes him and has to help him. Ghostly Enzo watches this and says he never lets go of a vendetta and that this is a good one that’s just getting started.
